[ Sam's been through this song and dance more than once, right down to the game of trying to figure out what's genuine and what's an act. The problem is that all the perception and experience in the world doesn't give him omniscience, and when he can't trust what he's hearing or seeing he has to go with gut instinct. Years ago he would have been more inclined toward a forgiving nature, more likely to give the benefit of the doubt and go with an 'innocent until proven guilty' attitude. Being stabbed in the back, literally as well as figuratively, has hardened him significantly, but even if he had a weapon on him he wouldn't be automatically reaching for it.

Fox spirit hits from from an unexpected angle though, and it's only years of practice that keep him from grimacing at the memories that flood in as a result. It was hard enough to remember Amy even on a good day, wondering where she ended up and if she fan afoul of some hunter, dying a painful death while he was none the wiser. But now the certain knowledge of the fact that it absolutely did happen, and his own brother was the one who did it, is the kind of closure that he could have done without.

At the very least it's obvious that this confession doesn't move Sam immediately toward hostility, though that wariness in his eyes isn't gone. ]

I think the same could be said for any of us. [ The words are dry, muttered before he takes a sip of the champagne he's been carrying around. ] So you don't eat anything at all?

[ Like people, but he won't say that out loud. ]
