[ Despite the horrible start John Irving already seems to have gotten off to here -- not only this near-miss with the hotel rooms, either, but that nearly every single component of Duplicity seems to be crafted specifically to embody Irving's own personal Hell -- not even he can complain about how incredible it felt to actually be washed, shaven, clean, for the first time in what must have been months; to have eaten not just one, but a couple of day's worth of filling, balanced meals; to not be bruised, mottled, and wrapped in gauze from early signs of scurvy; to finally be warm again.
Truly, it's like being reborn clean.
And now, also, here is Thomas Jopson, who Irving may not know all that well -- not on a personal level, that is; not yet -- but still couldn't be any more relieved to see.
Granted that it does feel a bit strange to be the one following Jopson's lead, but for now Irving doesn't pay that much mind. He follows close behind, keeping pace without too much trouble now that he isn't starving or half-dead on his feet. ]
Amazing... [ As they approach the building, then enter it. ] Do you really live here, Jopson?
[ Irving's tone is both approving and impressed, quite pleasantly surprised by how upscale the Up apartments appear to be. He can certainly live with the room where they've put him in the Down, it's no worse (actually, it's more likely an improvement) than the cramped lodging they all shared back on Terror, but this--
Well, needless to say Irving's very taken with it, the decor and the furniture and the sheer modernity of everything. ]
