Why should you be tortured?

[ Irving latches onto that rather than claim the easier bait of arguing in further circles about God's presence (or lack thereof) in this place, a subject they will clearly not be in agreement on anytime soon.

Which, frankly, is hardly the most pressing issue at hand anyway. Irving doesn't need Jopson to agree with him to still feel quite certain in his own assessments, although part of that is pure in-the-moment obstinance; later he may be more agreeable to allowing the possibility they may, in some ways, both be right, but right now his hackles are too far up.

Though he still settles, somewhat, being brought back down to rationality by the mention of their other crewmate.
]

You're about as far from immoral degeneracy as a man comes, Jopson, what is all this talk of... of temptation? Or finding happiness, here?

[ He says it like it's the most absurd thing Jopson's alluded to yet, as if Irving doesn't already have a vague notion of exactly what is meant by it, but he's been trying very hard not to think about it. ]

And as for Mr. Hickey... [ He pauses, fingers curling and uncurling against his palms, before he lets out a heavy sigh. ] He is... confused, but I do not believe him any more beyond redemption than you or I. Differences or not, we are all the three of us have here. While we are apart from everything -- our ships, our seas, our crew -- I consider it especially important we remain... united, as long as we are trapped here. Surely we can agree on this much.
