« « « TEST DRIVE MEME » » »

« « « ALL ON DISPLAY

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

... and you’re here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You’re a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your highrise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You’re a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you’ll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms.

Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new and old arrivals.

Winter is here and snow flurries are common in the Up while the slush collects in the Down.

» » » ALL ABOARD

After stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « WINTER WONDERLAND

As a particularly heavy snowstorm blows across the city, Duplicity finds itself blanketed in white. The morning after the storm, many citizens seem to be in a particularly mischievous mood and snowballs are a common sight flying through the air. A projectile meant for someone else may hit you square in the face if you're not careful — and then it's on. Joining these impromptu snow battles is encouraged, no matter a person's designation, and even Submissives teaming up to pelt unsuspecting Dominants with snowballs is generally taken in the spirit of good fun. Not everyone is throwing snow, of course — some are rolling much larger balls and shaping them into lewd snow figures.

Those feeling chilled after playing in the snow may experience the urge to warm up with someone else, skin to skin. Whether they're a stranger or a familiar face, holding hands, kissing, or getting down and dirty with the nearest willing partner is invigorating. It might even be the only way to really feel warm again.

« « « DUBIOUS DELIVERIES

(cw: aphro, humiliation kink)

Want to make some quick cash? After exiting the train in the Down, there seems to be a questionable character hanging about the station. Dressed in a trenchcoat and looking more like a flasher than the businessman he claims to be, this shady recruiter offers easy money in exchange for a simple delivery. Just take a package and drop it off at the address on the label. Really, that's it! Stop asking questions.

Should characters decide to open the package themselves instead, they'll discover one of the following: glitter — so much glitter, lube (appears normal, but actually contains hot pepper and will cause more than a mild tingling sensation if used anywhere sensitive), a package of flavored condoms mysteriously labeled "every flavor" (none of them taste good), candy or perfume containing an aphrodisiac that, in addition to the usual libido-boosting effect, will also cause an intense craving for humiliation.

It seems to be one of those services that allows one to send anonymous prank gifts, and they're hiding behind LIERs as couriers. There's no return address or company information on or inside the package, except for a card marked Encoded Sin Corp — which does not seem to be a real company if the name is searched.

Whether characters end up delivering the package — maybe even to a fellow LIER — or get into some trouble along the way, someone is getting a nasty surprise.

« « « SURPRISES FOR SALE

(cw: aphro, dubcon, excessive fluids, exhibitionism, public use)

A small winter market has been set up along one of the major streets in the Up with stalls selling a variety of goods ranging from knitted hats and scarves, soaps, scented lotions, candles, jewelry, artwork and assorted crafts to hand-dyed bondage rope and kinky leather accessories. Food and drink stands are plentiful as well. Strings of lights crisscross the street between the roofs of the shops, providing a cheerful glow, and there are tables set up in the street itself for people to sit and chat while having a snack — if they can stand the cold.

Some of the most popular treats being sold are hot chocolate, eggnog, marshmallow snowmen, and sugar cookies decorated like snowflakes. Of course, their popularity may have something to do with the effects they produce when consumed.

• The hot chocolate simply gets one all hot and bothered.
• The eggnog may cause heavy production of sexual fluids, a desire to be filled or covered with someone else's cream, or all of the above.
• The marshmallow snowmen will make those who eat them want to invite others to use them as they please, desiring nothing more than to be molded into the perfect fucktoy.
• The sugar cookies seem to induce all sorts of different cravings — after all, no two snowflakes are alike!

These effects tend to last at least an hour and may, in some cases, last up to a full day.

One of the jewelry shops sells an unusual selection of compass pendants and bracelets. The compass arrows spin round and round lazily while the pieces are on display. Once worn, however, that changes. The arrow will settle on a direction, but instead of pointing north it will lead directly to another person. Perhaps you should speak to them? You may even begin to feel magnetically drawn to them yourself… In the event that two people have compasses that point them at each other, the attraction will be even stronger — nearly impossible to deny.

There is another shop which sells intricately designed pocket watches and small clocks. When these timepieces are stared at for an extended length of time or picked up and handled, characters will feel a brief but strong connection to their past and experience a vivid flashback to some moment that was, in whatever way, meaningful for them. After reliving the memory, they will feel compelled to speak about it to whoever is nearby.

« « « MOD & OOC NOTES

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right." When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass." This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide:

If your character likes it hot, they are a Dominant. If your character prefers the cold, they are a Submissive.

To Note: Characters can only swap their designation for one of the following reasons: an event occurs that allows it or there are OOC reasons that make it a necessity. Any swap always requires mod approval and each character can only ever switch once. Characters that are being reapped will keep their previous designation but players can choose to use new TDMs with different designations for fun!

Test Drive threads can be used as activity proofs for characters currently in-game.

Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!!

[ If she catches the use of past tense she doesn't think much of it. It seems pretty normal to her when talking about things back home. ]

[ Emet-Selch is silent for other reasons, namely that he's using up a lot of willpower to not show any signs of reacting to meeting Hythlodaeus here in the first place. When they're alone, perhaps. But in front of everyone, out here in the streets? No...

His grief is something he has always carried on his own, behind closed doors. ]

Yes, I suppose. It's not as though I had any say in the decor.

[Turning to face his friend, he notes that he seems oddly reserved. He steps closer- now that they're inside, away from prying eyes, he feels that he can ask.]

Is everything quite all right?

[He's not quite as shocked by Emet-Selch's appearance here, after all the man was waiting for him in the lifestream. But it's still something he's grateful for, to see him standing beside him once more.]

[ Irving does listen, face slack from drink yet still pinched with tension, eyes drifting vacantly somewhere around middle distance. Maybe he's simply losing the energy to keep arguing in circles, or maybe he's finally reaching the stage of "drunk enough to stop caring," but his eyes refocus onto Jack's, glazed but intent.

It's hard not to be brought to a sort of thoughtful silence, tipsy though he clearly is, because he's being spoken to now with a level of consideration that -- especially from Jack -- rather surprises him. For all Irving may have the obnoxious habit of speaking from atop his various soapboxes once something gets him going, rarely do those he's lectured about this or that ever seem to try actually seeing the subject from his perspective; to understand him, if still not necessarily respect or agree with his point of view.

Despite himself, he feels slightly moved for the fact Jack is making any sort of an effort at all; much more than Irving would have expected from a pirate.
]

I am no fool, Rackham-- I can see that it is clearly the Royal Navy to which you are referring. [ He observes dryly, but also doesn't protest the implications. ] Though I'm afraid it is still more complicated than only that alone.

[ His glass wobbles in place slightly as he traces his finger around the rim, pausing contemplatively before he goes on: ]

Perhaps not here. That I will grant you. [ And takes another drink. ] Or at least not in any such manner by which many a civilized society might normally determine what should or should not "matter."

[ At which point Irving puts up a hand, in demonstration that he's not trying to argue-- he's simply talking. On another level, this does feel a bit uncomfortably like a reversal of the speech he once gave to Hickey, even down to the slightly contrived "we're not inherently quite so different, are we," outreach of it, but luckily Irving is also too drunk at this point to feel patronized by it. ]

It soothes me some to be able to discuss this with you. [ He reaches across the table, placing his palm on Jack's wrist. ] Please speak if there is anything you may also wish to unburden yourself of-- I will listen.

No. And yes. That is, when I returned to the lifestream upon my death ... you were not there.

[ It bothers him. Not nearly as much as it overwhelms his heart and soul with relief to be reunited with Hythlodaeus in the flesh now. But bothers him nonetheless. ]

I have not seen you for a very, very long time.

Kurt nods once, firmly, thinking for a moment on where to pick up where that weighty "if" left off. The faint smile he's kept in place melts away as he releases a deep breath, but he remains steady.

"I understand," he starts. "It's-- There is little LIERs can do about what is expected here without consequences from the authorities, and their capabilities in that department are incredible." Which he's sure Jean already knows, since she, well beyond incredible, is here in the first place.

Alas, my friend. I was unable to return to the lifestream upon my sacrifice. My soul was... trapped, I suppose you could say.

( nick doesn't have a high threshold to cross here. not that. oliver means to discourage whatever nick's relationship is with this guy. honestly, if he's in one piece, not being legitimately drained enough to almost kill him often, and doesn't look visibly exhausted or hurt by whatever, nick's probably fine. he's too sappy for it to be a shit relationship. probably. oliver moves fingers down to thread them through nick's hair; consolation, for the potentially asshole remark he might have made. pending on how nick chooses to take it. )

the cafe's door opens. oliver takes several steps out into the snow, and while he could announce himself like a normal person, he opts to wait until he's close behind pierce, fingers quickly shoving their way up the back of his coat because it is fucking cold out and they've already started getting frosty at the tips. )

I-- yes.

[ Irving nods, a broad-strokes acknowledgement to everything he's just been told, only slightly frantic with wondering what they might end up doing that risks even the possibility of broken bones. He rubs idly, nervously, at his wrists, but even with that dangerous potential hanging in the air his excitement remains undaunted, aching in his pants with a dull, persistent throb yet still not flagging an inch. With the apparent advances in medical science here, Irving can still take mild comfort in the fact that if it were to happen, if only by unfortunate accident, the odds of him ending up maimed for life from it will at least be lower than they've ever been. ]

I'll speak-- shout if I must, even. If it comes to it.

[ And then his hands move forward, offering themselves up to be cuffed with a fascination that pounds in Irving's chest like a hammer, like drums. They don't look at all like shackles, really; they're much thinner, more flexible, maybe even... adjustable, for size? ]

Although, n-not so loud that your neighbour should hear us.

I've made no attempt to fool you. I told you, I was a Navy man myself, when I was young. I know how they operate. [ More than a hundred years have passed, but his confidence that it's changed is rather low. He hasn't asked Hickey about his scars, but he's sure he could get it in a few guesses. New ships, same shit. ] But it's more than the Royal Navy. It's all of civilization. It hinges on each and every one of us giving up an essential part of ourselves, our desires, our pride, any number of things. If being ashamed of myself is the price I must pay to take part in it, I have no interest.

[ That's probably a bit radical for him. Dial it back, Jack. He orders another round, a good enough excuse to let the issue rest, if that's what Irving wants. It's after the server walks off, when the other man reaches out for him, a warm hand on his wrist that surprises him. Is he too deep in his cups to realize that anyone could see them? ]

I'm glad to hear it. [ Honestly. He's looking to gain this man's trust for his own ends, sure, but he would like to listen to fewer soapbox rants in the process. Carefully, Jack twists his wrist palm-up, letting his rings scrape against the table, with no intention to shake him off. He takes a drink and just looks at him, considering. There's a lot going on with him right now, but he does not want nor need to unburden himself to Irving about it. Something small, should suffice. ]

There is one thing. I lied to you, earlier. [ He squints and tilts his head, looking apologetic enough. ] If Anne knew what we'd done, she wouldn't care. She fucks women. Did it back home, too. Sorry. I liked seeing you squirm.

[ He smirks, amused with his own clever joke, but there's no bite to it. It's flirtatious, almost. ]

He's not middle aged, he's like thirty.

( which is not a great point to make, considering the other members of the "nick's relationships" club, but he says it all the same. he might or might not have picked him up in a club — though that's not a street — so he keeps mum there, just snags the phone back so he can do some more careful navigation.

he really should delete a lot of these, if for no other reason than the propensity for leaked images on this city, but he's--sentimental, or something like that. )

Nate. He's a witch, he was basically the first person I met when I got here, gave me a job straight away. I don't know, we just clicked. We didn't start dating until a couple of months ago though.

( he shows another picture, nauseatingly sweet, of the two of them in the theatre and nick half in nate's lap, pressing a kiss on his cheek. )

He's-- I don't even know. Amazing, basically. He does So much for people, even strangers, and his friends, the people he loves? He's never let me down. I felt like....I don't know, as close as I can get to being with you guys, when I was with him.

Let's just call it all of the above, and strike it off the list.

[He doesn't see the purpose of pets unless they're people he takes a shining to. Animals have their working uses and maybe this is another way to detach himself from the associations with Theodore, who fed cats and nursed back to life the barn cat's litter when she'd abandoned them mid winter. He stares at Oliver, and then gives a shrug.]

Is that a disappointment?

[ So Irving thinks he'll just stick out his wrists almost daintily and receive handcuffs like a gift, with his hands in front of him. Amusing and somehow deeply in character, but not how this is going to go while he's at the helm. Not if they're going to do things the way he prefers to do them.

Cheol-gang takes an abrupt step back, snatches one arm, turns him so that his chest hits the wall—a fluid motion that transpires in a matter of seconds, ending with his grabbing the far arm and cuffing them together. He cinches them tight over the man's birdlike wrists but stops just short of bearing down on their starkly visible veins—he knows by now how far one can go before the handcuffed party loses sensation in their fingers. Not that it's ever really mattered much to him; Irving should consider himself lucky, in Cheol-gang's opinion, that he's anything other than indifferent to the longterm wellbeing of his circulatory system.

His heart races; the warmth is unbearable; the lack of stimulation is unbearable. He can't remember the last time he was this hard, that he felt any degree of sexual need this urgent. The elevator lurches to a stop and Cheol-gang wastes no time in yanking Irving toward the hallway, fingers bearing down into what little flesh his upper arm possesses beneath the sleeve of his wool peacoat. ]

Come with me. [ Might as well use this one chance to raise his voice without being overheard while he can. ] Now!

[ It's synthetic, not identical to the thrill he's gone too long without—but he feels. The power is intoxicating, maddening, an acceptable enough imitation only exacerbated by Irving's own possibly-unintentional antagonism. He needed this, the chance to give orders, to control something or someone. ]

Not for nothing. [ Irving counters, though more softly. ] Society alone is not what demands of man these sacrifices-- it is for our own sakes, Rackham. Don't you see? God grants within every one us the ability to act with grace, and virtue, w-with... dignity, and purity... strong, moral values. It is not perfection that He asks of us, no, but our devotion, Rackham. Jack. Our commitment to nurturing good and righteous souls.

[ So much for not soapboxing, but... at least it's not the worst he's ever come out with, right? He touches his hand to his heart, eyes shining still with earnesty and zeal, with eagerness to share this part of himself with Jack in a way the other man can understand, although Irving is absolutely too in his cups to see the futility in that notion.

Or, indeed, to consider that anyone might see them like this, the way his hand remains on Jack's wrist, fingers idly tracing the ridges of bone up to his knuckles.

He holds Jack's gaze with his own faintly bleary one, then blinks, lips parting in mild surprise. Not offense, even, just surprise, because he very obviously could not have seen this particular plot twist coming.
]

Wh-- do you mean that? [ He blurts out after a beat, perhaps not intending for flirtatious, himself -- Irving wouldn't know how -- but somehow still clumsily circling the mark. ] It won't be... she really doesn't mind?

( thirty is basically the same thing as middle aged, but there's no point in pointing that out outloud either, is there? when nick starts scrolling through the phone again, oliver just threads fingers through nick's hair, brushing it back and out of his face. gently. doesn't look at the phone screen, even if it's not like he'd need to if he really wanted to see whatever embarrassing nudes nick's trying not to leak.

but he looks up when nick offers the phone up again, glances at nate's face for a moment before turning his attention back to the very important task of--braiding nick's hair against the side of his head. nothing that wouldn't come out easy. he's bored. deal with it. )

It's probably not something I'm gonna keep to.

( not something he'd admit to if he was desperate. which. oliver is, a little, but he's got enough time that it isn't dire yet. there's more idiots running around this city he could shove into if he needed something and this guy opted not to give it to him. nick has it nice enough he could make do with the crappy room for a few weeks if nick let him take off with a bunch of his crap to keep him mostly comfortable.

but the bread's delicious. too many carbs and too much fat and it's fucking amazing. no complaints here. he's even reaching for another piece of it, talking again as he reaches for a second piece. )

He has his place, the Midnight Theatre. They do like, performances or some shit on the other side, and a shop where I work. We make potions, charms, that kind of thing, it's fun.

( that's the cliff's notes version anyway, the theatre is just about the best thing to happen though, and it's clear in the way nick talks about it. he's happier still at the fussing though, the light touch and the fingers through his hair. nick tips his head into the touch, relaxes comfortably and lets his eyes slip closed for a moment. )

His family's kind of like mine. Mine before they stopped caring anyway, super rich, super overbearing. He's not from our world, his magic feels--different, but it's the closest to ours. I think they use warlock, but it's not like a species thing, just a title. Not like Ragnor.

Nier tries to smile too. "Then I'll have to get something else too. I don't know how long I can handle this." He glanced up at the man. He didn't often run into people taller than him, but then again, most of the people where he was from was shorter than 6 foot.

He blanched at the image that flashed through his mind, shaking it off. He wasn't like that. He turned and started the opposite direction. Thankfully Kainé had given him a note that he was free to shop as he pleased. It was still irritating relying on someone else to give him permission even for the essentials.

"There's a clothing shop this way. Probably be worth getting you something for this weather." He glanced over his shoulder at him, motioning the direction to go.

[ It happens fast, Irving having little time to react with much more than a surprised yelp before he's flung around and slammed roughly against the wall, his hands cuffed indelicately behind him. The flurry of movement and pain -- discomfort already pulling at his arms and shoulders, a sharp ache and bitter taste in his mouth from biting down on his tongue -- both overwhelms and excites him considerably, fear and adrenaline and desire lighting up his brain like a switchboard before circulating further throughout his entire body.

And then, Cheol-gang's sternly raised voice, just a few measures too soft to qualify as a yell but still hardly any less sharp as one--
]

--Ah!

[ He nearly stumbles, almost trips over his own feet as he's hauled bodily out of the elevator no matter how compliantly he's trying to come along, gasping and stammering for a temporary inability to speak with actual words. It hurts a bit more than Irving had anticipated, actually, but he doesn't complain beyond the occasional yelp or whimper when he's herded again in a particularly harsh manner, the sting of the cuffs digging into his wrists every now and then already prominent.

His knees almost give out and cause him to hit the apartment door, but he manages to retain his balance, squirming now less with discomfort, more in arousal.
]

Please, I'm-- I-I'm... I-I'll cooperate with you, I will--
