It could have been a self-protective sort of thing, defensiveness to ward off the perceived risk of his interest. Or it could be that there really is something sadistic in Ed's desire--not the knifeplay or torture as such, but an interest in chasing other people's discomfort, their anxiety, even a flash of fear in their eyes. He wouldn't be the first man to get off on that. Or maybe it's something else completely. Vrenille's jury's still out on the matter.

Earth's a popular one, but there's so many different versions of it, gets hard to name a common denominator. Whatever you're into, you will find some like-minded types.
