He remembers the church, the terror when he realized he wasn't going to be leaving it. But if he'd been given the choice, then, death versus immortality, he doesn't know what he would have chosen. He'd believed then that he was going to change the world, after all. Would he have naively thought he could hold onto his humanity from the beginning.
