It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

... and you’re here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You’re a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You’re a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you’ll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms.

Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new and old arrivals.

The weather is rather cold and icy.

» » » WALKING TOUR

The cold, icy winter weather has seen to it that there is an unfortunate interruption with the usual city tour for the newest arrivals to Duplicity. Some of the train tracks have a dangerous amount of ice coating them and sections of travel are now unavailable via train.

City officials still believe that the tours are important to integrate new LIERs to Duplicity so they have organised personal walking tours held by current LIERs. New arrivals will be paired with their own tour guide; they can take the suggested path or take their barely dressed charge on a more ad-hoc tour. It might be considerate to let them change into something warmer first!

Important landmarks and checkpoints like Fiddler’s Square, North Park, The Up and Down Courts, the People Zoo and of course S.L.U.T. need to be marked off on the tours but there have also been fun local stores which have set-ups for free samples and information booklets. What order and how people travel to them is up to them.

« « « GALLERIA OF SEX

One of the stops along these new walking tours is a temporary educational art installation that has been set up to display and talk about the rich variety of kinks that are popular in Duplicity. Newcomers are invited to come inside the building, sit on the human furniture to watch and learn or volunteer to participate themselves.

Each section has local LIERs and graduated citizens there to help walk those new to the program through the displays, explaining the appeal and draw of each kink.

Live demonstrations or performance art are carried out by LIERs who have volunteered, been conscripted or are fulfilling a sentence that would normally land them in the People Zoo. They can and will ask anyone and everyone to step up and be part of the artwork themselves.

Some of the displays set up will feature:

Naked Submissives have been bound and posed with their bodies arched in visually pleasing positions. They are surrounded with candles burning around them and guests are invited to drip the hot wax across their bodies to add to the artwork that is their naked skin.
Zap your lover or the volunteers with an electrical wand and discover the way it can make the skin tingle and muscles tense in just the right place at just the right moment.
The image of cum dripping from a well used Submissive is considering something to appreciate visually so stations have been set up with glory holes and kneeling participants to have their faces and buttocks painted over the course of the day.
A variety of whips, canes and paddles have been set out next to padded benches for Submissives to bend themselves over. The marks they leave are something to be proud of.
No art display in Duplicity is complete without an ode to bondage, one room will be entirely devoted to participants being suspended from the ceiling, held in positions that will test their stamina and flexibility and leave the most gorgeous bruises.

We encourage players not to limit themselves in regards to what is on display. There are many more kinks than the ones listed, and Duplicity considers all kinds of sexual acts a form of art.

Photo taking is encouraged throughout the exhibition, especially when your own participation is concerned. If you missed the chance to do so, in the moment, you need not worry as the gift shop at the end of the gallery will have many different prints taken over the course of the exhibition available for purchase. Take home a keepsake of your first day in Duplicity.

Winter does make it harder in Duplicity to enjoy all the pleasures of the flesh that could be on offer in the warmer months. Most who live in the city still need to wrap up with many layers when the weather turns so chilly. But that’s not saying that the city can’t find ways to help keep its residents in the mood.

It will first be noticeable to those trying their hand at streaming or posting video footage onto the network. Regardless of a character's state of dress while recording, they will appear completely naked to those watching and no amount of covering up with more articles of material will change that.

Others might see it as they set about on their first days getting used to the city’s layout, glancing into a shop window they will notice their own state of undress in their reflection. You might even see it in a particularly shiny bit of ice but no matter where you look, all reflective surfaces will show everyone in their birthday suits, naked as the day they were born.

« « « BLADES OF GLORY

In a bid to encourage individuals to get out and keep active despite the chilly weather, the city has transformed one of the large tennis courts in the Up into a makeshift outdoor skating rink. In the recreation building attached to the courts-turned-rink the change rooms have been outfitted for people to change into more appropriate clothing. There is also at the front of the building an area to rent skates.

Many who get on the ice see no reason to keep apart, as many contracted couples can be seen holding hands or chasing each other as they skate. In the change rooms it isn’t uncommon to see a bit of hanky panky or people getting off at helping others in and out of their skates. There also seems to be a small hot chocolate stand set up inside the building where characters can buy a warm drink to sip on while taking a break from skating. The drink may leave those that consume it feeling especially warm and frisky, with perhaps a bit of extra energy they need to burn off - skating might not cut it.

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide: If your character would rather have a dog for a pet they are Dominant. If they would rather have a cat for a pet they are Submissive. If your character is from a canon that has neither, pick the choice you believe they would prefer more.

To Note: Characters can only swap their designation for one of the following reasons: an event occurs that allows it or there are OOC reasons that make it a necessity. Any swap always requires mod approval and each character can only ever switch once. Characters that are being reapped will keep their previous designation but players can choose to use new tdms with different designations for fun!

[ He watches her warily, extremely suspicious to be agreed with, but it seems to be sincere so... okay. Yes. He'll allow that it's strange, not even in a prudish way, just a people really live like this? way; he's never seen anything quite like it, and Third House is arguably one of (if not the) most likely houses to be prone to flamboyant, hedonistic debauchery.

But just, you know, in a classy way.

Nodding a bit idly, Naberius doesn't fully process the rest of words until a couple of moments later (distracted by something in his lap that is very much not his sword), at which point his eyes widen in understanding. ]

Oh, fuck. They drug us too? [ He exhales, annoyed, but he's currently too horny to be that annoyed. ] God, well, of course that explains it. Then I'd better--

[ "Go take care of this," or maybe even just "go", something, but as he stands his hand brushes against her lightly and that makes his hormones surge again. He looks at her warily, feeling quite conflicted, and clears his throat. Stalls like a little bitch: ]

Er-- about what percentage of the food would you say is typically...?

1899? That makes us practically contemporaries. There's other folk here from what I'll call "our time": Miss Ives and Professor Lyall are good people, a bit fancy but not bad for it. There are other people, apparently, but I've not met them yet.

[He has just about found his feet, but it's still early days here really.]

But I guess you'll meet people in time and make your own judgment.

[ Marcus looks up from his paper just long enough to see the couple crash and burn on the ice, but again, he doesn't react much beyond a quiet roll of his eyes. He's far more interested in Tinya's offer than anything else. ]

Yeah? Where?

[ He's not even going to ask her what she means, exactly, by something else - if it's something he can smoke, he's gonna take it. He's the kind of guy who bends to peer pressure that isn't even there - if she's offering him something harder than weed, the last thing he wants to do is look like a pussy by asking questions. ]

Augh - don't.

[ Marcus rolls onto his side, sandwiching his ears in between his folded up arms, though he remains largely unresponsive beyond helpless little whines and incoherent mumblings about his parents and some dude named Fuckface. For the first half of the drive, he's actually pretty easy to forget about. Just this quiet lump of a person tripping out on the car floor.

But soon he's literally standing up, dangerously leaning over Reggie's seat and getting way too close to his personal space, given that he's driving. He's staring out at the road and death-gripping the headrest, knuckles white and sweating bullets. ]

You're going so fast, man. This is so illegal. We're gonna get caught.

At least the guy seems content enough to do all the talking himself, which is fine by Arthur. He's not talkative under normal circumstances, and these are not normal circumstances at all. But he's polite enough to shake the hand and happy enough to go along with whatever.

As long as it doesn't take too long, anyway. As far as he's concerned, the best thing to do would be to tick the boxes of these destinations and call it a day.

"I'm too sober for this."

"I'll make sure to add a few watering holes to the tour." Sobriety, too, can be a casualty of the day.

A taxi has stopped by the curb, and Vrenille is opening the door, gesturing his companion in before him, watching the reaction on the man's face as he does. Without his native attire to go by, there's very little that would let him gauge just how foreign or familiar the city's infrastructure and general technology level might be. All he has to go on is reactions, body language, facial expressions--even micro ones.

"Am I not getting a name 'cause you're feeling a bit overwhelmed or 'cause you're the sorta man who doesn't like to give it?"

The way he says it, he'll be fine with either answer and not take offence. He's just getting a feel for where he stands.

"... This place makes no sense and I hate that," Q sighs, propping his chin in his hand as he stares out the window.

The purely illogical nature of some of these happenings in Duplicity are enough to drive Q up the walls, and if he weren't who he was, he'd probably act on that frustration by screaming or punching someone.

As it is-

"I hope you've got tea at home."

In a weird way, there's something kind of nostalgic about this whole thing for Hakkyuu. There are differences, but the Galleria is reminiscent of his first time here, though there had been a much stronger focus on emulating furniture like some kind of kinky IKEA and less of an "art" display.

Drifting through the space does feel sort of surreal for him though, the intensity in the atmosphere from the space and the bodies appreciating the various installations sparking up against his energy that's always only barely contained under his skin in a combination that crackles with interest and want. Honestly, he can't tell if he's missed this or not.

Dropping his back against the divider between the booths with his arms folded, Hakkyuu takes a moment to scan the area and keep an eye out on who might be ducking into the glory holes, though he's aware of the man settled down in the actual seat of the booth behind him as he half-turns his head to look at him sidelong. His stare lingers a little longer on Logan, though after an extended moment he gives a shrug.

"Depends. If it's the same as last time I was here, then all the sex? Sure, that's pretty much everywhere. Y'know, like the local currency."

He pauses, clearing his throat with a frown as he notices his voice is a little strained and almost hoarse like he's not spoken for a while.

"But how they package it up? How much you want it or how much it repulses you? How much they wanna make sure you're doing your part as some kinda civic duty or whatever? That's what varies."

Then, he gives another slight backwards glance.

"How y'finding it so far? You got an eye for art?"

The last word at least is offered with a bit of a snort and a part-chuckle.

Guess I will.

[ He could do without all this, but he supposes others feel the same. He's not special. But he'll still be annoyed.

Unless Jacob keeps talking, he falls silent to just drink. ]

Probably not. [He admits, with a shrug.

A glance over at her, sideways from behind his glasses. Then he turns, just slightly, to look her over more thoroughly, using his soul perception. She might be able to feel it, if she's got any sort of 6th sense. The feeling of being examined, closely, like an insect pinned on a board.]

Wesley watches his profile instead while Q stares out of the window. He's used to the chaos that is Duplicity, the chaos that is his life in general. But he understands why the illogical glitches in the system would get on Q's nerves. He's still enough of an accountant to need everything matching perfectly, to the last percentile.

"I'm sorry that you ended up here again," he says quietly. "Going back home would have been preferable, I'm sure." It's different for Wesley, there's nothing back there for him. And while Duplicity isn't perfect, he would prefer to stay here.

"Yeah, of course I have tea," he says with a small snort. He still buys too much of it when he shops. Even if he prefers coffee.

Q had looked over towards Wesley at the quiet apology and feels his lips twitch a bit in the beginnings of a smile before looks away again.

"I could think of worse places to be. Especially given the current company."

With all these hapless mortal boys at your mercy?

Come on, Agatha. You're not bored.

Then you'll be sent to Realignment and...encouraged to change your mind. They may go so far as to imprison you for failure to comply.

[ It's a fair question. It's one he'd asked himself. But failure to adhere to the rules here doesn't really do anything but make things harder, in the long run.

There are other ways to subvert the system. If Arthur is one such man? Perhaps there's hope for him yet. ]

There really is no way around it. But I've found it's best not to think of it as simply a matter of saving yourself. Those branded as Submissives have a much harder time than we do. Contracting with one provides them some measure of security and freedom. And the contracts need only be as restrictive as you wish them to be.

[ Jacob is a talkative soul, he likes to fill the silence with some sort of noise, some sort of banter. But he has also learnt in the short time that he's been here that sometimes people like to focus on their drinking. Hellboy certainly does, downing whatever is on hand with an almost mechanical desire to get out of his own head.

He supposes that is exactly how Arthur drinks, so he doesn't add anything more, simply settling in to sip at his own. ]

Hm. [ geralt thinks he's going to have a similar issue with the technology. it's not something he wants to let on about because he doesn't want people to think he needs help.

even if he's going to. he supposes he could try and fumble his way through all this and figure it out on his own but maybe asking would be faster.

it just wouldn't be easier. he sighs. ]

I'm probably going to find myself in a similar circumstance. The place I come from is not like this.

[ if that weren't obvious by the way he looks and speaks. ]

Are there any specific laws I should be aware of? I've spent time in prisons before and I suppose I should avoid that.

Wesley ends up staring at his profile again, this time with a pleasant wrinkle on his freckled nose. There's a sentimental side to Q but it's hidden under about a million layers of what of that "Englishness" of his.

"Wow, one might even end up thinking you like me a little bit, babe," he teases.

[Well, that answers that, doesn't it? How interesting. Good or bad, she isn't certain. Yet.]

A collection of professionals. Intended to discern whether a provocative act or display is of artistic merit, and deserving of the attention of the local Arts Protectorate. Or whether it is merely crime.

There's a snort in response and a flash of hazel eyes giving a knowing, sidelong stare.

"Some people like to make bold assumptions."

Not that he's saying that assumption is wrong, per se...

[ It takes Varric a split second to take her in, the sight of her so wholly unexpected he nearly has to double-take. But then he grins, broad and warm, and holds his arms out as she comes in for the hug. ]

Oof— [ He makes a show of staggering as he pulls her in to squeeze. Look, Isabela, maybe if you didn't wear such high damn heels you could hug your local dwarf better. But he leans up into it either way, squeezing tight. ] Is that muscle I feel? You been working out? You always hit like a bag of bricks, but now even your hugs are out to rattle my bones...

[ And then he pulls back to look at her, expression a mix of playful teasing and mock self-assurance. ]

Or you just miss me that much, huh?

[ Jacob is lucky, in one regard. He was born at the start of the Industrial Revolution, and therefore change is something he's used to. The training he's had as an assassin has made him adapt easily to new situations, including this one. But for people that haven't had those experiences? It might be tougher. ]

Well, don't accidentally share your post-shower rub-down with the rest of the city, like I did.

[He looks over the man again, and shakes his head]

You're a dominant- so life for you won't be all that bad. Just remember your quota, and that in three months you need to find a submissive to contract with. Although with your looks, they'll probably flock to you.

"I see, I see, gosh, what an adventurous thing to do," Wesley replies in mimicry of Q's accent. He's heard plenty of it from both Q and Dominic alike.

The car pulls up to the house then and he leans forward to pay the cabby before getting out and holding the door open for Q. The house is dark and Wesley has merely swept the front steps off of snow, a small path leading to them.

It's not.

[ especially now that he's downed the entire cup and tossed it away. he'd seen plenty of people drinking whatever the concoction was before he'd decided to taste it so unless everyone was going to be poisoned, he knows he would have been safe.

unless his luck was just that shit that only the small batch that he drank was poisoned. it wouldn't surprise him. but, he feels fine.

geralt sighs, turning to look over at her. in the midst of all this, she looks almost out of place. interesting. ]

I've been poisoned before. It's not kept me down yet. Most people don't know how to create a good enough poison for that.

[ not for him, at least. ]

He's already ridden a car once - the limo, to be precise - and he's had the chance to look at more of them passing by. Doesn't stop him from giving this a lookover too, wondering for the n-th time what kind of person would even think of this. How much time do people have on their hands?

Then, he lifts his head and gives Vrenille a blank expression.

"Because you didn't ask and wouldn't stop talking," he says dryly before getting into the taxi. "It's Arthur Morgan."

Vrenille wasn't actually talking that much. He's had a bad day, and Vrenille is just going to have to be the one he takes it out on.

[Considering her lack of socialization as a child that's honestly only gotten worse given her exposure to the world's most solitary superhero, Cassandra isn't very good at the whole idea of flirting either. She's only had two people actively flirt with her before - neither went very well.]

There can be competition as well.

[Although, that was partially based on visual appearance.

At his question, she nods and then walks off to get skates. It takes longer than it should before she's back. The reason becomes apparent with the change of her clothing into something that was appropriate for figure skating although with a Duplicity flare.]
