Vrenille understands what Mustang says by articulating it to things in his own world, drawing associations and comparisons that allow him to make rough sense of it all in metaphorical terms. It's an approximation that more research-minded people would probably want to explode and pick apart, but for him operates as perfectly sufficient, especially for now:

The way that the man manipulates it, what he says about specialising in fire alchemy, amounts, in Vrenille's mind, to elementalist. And an elementalist who specialises in fire attunement? Well, that's certainly plenty familiar to him.
"So if I take these off, you gimme your word you're not gonna blow the place up or turn anyone into a human fireball or suchlike?"
His gut already tells him that the man won't, that he can trust his good behaviour, at least for the time being. He's asking him mostly because it will form something of a little pact between them, like a commitment to deal with each other in at least a basic degree of good faith going forward.
