Oddly enough, Adam finds himself more frightened by these men like this than he does night terrors and skeletons that come to life, and all that he's faced. He can fight evil, and has done so. Physical fighting though triggers things in him that he isn't ready to face. Especially fighting back.

Shocked by the dog's ferocity in defending him and he's sure that's what he's doing. He feels no fears from the dog, but that doesn't change that he isn't shaking like a leaf by the time the attackers run. He fought back. The dog had inspired him, and he hated the idea of them hurting him, but he had fought back.

How had he done that?

He opens his mouth to say something and sinks down onto his heels instead, staring at the dog who is definitely there to protect him.

"Such a good boy," he manages, looking a bit pale but still trying to process this. All of it. "You saved me."

Because without fearing for the other, he's not sure he would have fought back. He hasn't coped with this part of his life, and now he's stared it in the eyes.
