It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy. This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses. To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues. ... and you're here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity. After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a clear plastic top and pants along with clear plastic boots to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation. If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You're a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You're a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you'll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms. Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new and old arrivals. The weather is rather wet and rainy. Very, very rainy.

It's time for the monthly Duplicity train tour. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park. The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

(cw: aphro, dub-con, violence, marking) Ice and chilly weather have begun to give way to rain instead, with overcast skies and dark clouds a seemingly constant sight. While the overabundance of rain is an annoyance and comes with the usual series of problems, such as leaky ceilings, mold growth, and gutters or storm drains overflowing, this time the rain carries with it another problem altogether. A weather advisory warning is broadcast to every device, as well as on news networks and radio. The rain, at least for a few days, is not ordinary rain. Whether you're in the Up or the Down, when the water hits clothing it eats away at it. The more water it absorbs, the more the material disintegrates until the wearer is left naked. When the rain comes in contact with skin (or is ingested) the effects seem to differ depending on where you are in Duplicity. In the Up, it's relatively harmless and merely has an aphrodisiac effect, leaving individuals feeling hot and bothered, more sociable and touchy feely. Those in the Down, however, are not so lucky. As the rain seeps through the soil from the Up, it ends up laced with toxins, causing a range of less pleasant side effects for anyone unfortunate enough to come into contact with it. Aside from the aphrodisiac, those who get caught in the rain may develop an uncomfortable, itchy rash, leaving them looking rather spotty for a few days. Those who can't resist scratching at themselves will find a newfound pleasure to the relief it brings and start to crave the feeling or sight of similar marks. In worst case scenarios, individuals will become addicted to marking themselves and others, perhaps even to the point of breaking skin. Effects may last for several hours after exposure and will stack with repeated exposures. In all cases, getting off will bring temporary relief but will not alleviate the symptoms entirely. Plastic coverings seem to be unaffected by the rain and, as word spreads, the Natives in Duplicity form a mad rush buying up umbrellas. Unless a character is lucky, they may find themselves unable to purchase - or even borrow - one. Theft of umbrellas becomes widespread in the Down, often escalating to violence, and even the Up isn't safe from thugs trying to steal and resell this suddenly hot commodity. There's another side to all of this, however. Due to the shortage of umbrellas, it isn't uncommon to see Dom/Sub pairs sharing umbrellas together. If anything, it's encouraged as a means to strengthen their bond. Enterprising Subs and Doms alike may even sell their "services" to escort individuals who would otherwise end up soaked.

(cw: substance abuse, altered states, coercion, fluids, physical body changes) A new "holistic" pharma company named SQuIRT is opening up in Duplicity and is paying a pretty penny for people to trial run their new line of supplements. These supplements are supposed to increase a person's vitality and energy levels, but the side effects are what the company is really looking out for. Some of the side effects aren't so bad and could include: Prolonged erections Lactation in both men and women Size enlargement of breasts or genitals Copious amounts of ejaculate or sexual fluids Sudden interest in previously unexplored kinks While others might find their own reaction to be a little more severe: Shrinkage of breasts, genitals, or entire being Inability to cum Uncontrollable hair growth or hair loss Temporary loss of one or more senses Spontaneous weeping Subjects must take the supplements for at least a week, otherwise they'll receive no compensation for their troubles. All new arrivals will find themselves automatically enrolled in these trials, whether they want to be or not, and expected to report to the clinic. Of course they don't have to take the supplements, but the payout is certainly enticing, especially for those unfortunate enough to be branded Submissives.

(cw: violence) Crime runs rampant in the Down as always but now, with the nastier side effects of the rain creating an ongoing problem, some unsavory types are sneaking their way into the Up where the effects aren't so hazardous. The result is an uptick in crime in places that are usually considered safe. Be careful how you carry yourself - and your valuables. Those who look like easy pickings may find their pockets empty. Cameras in public areas are being vandalized as well, while homes and businesses are seeing a rise in graffiti. Most of the graffiti is merely obscene, but some is outright seditious. Good luck explaining the latter to the authorities if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. One of the smaller gangs that has a presence in the Down is taking particular advantage of the rain's disruption to expand their territory into the Up. Known as the Bulldogs, their members are young men and they have a reputation for violent muggings and assaults - mainly targeting Submissives. They loiter in groups near the train and the elevator between the Up and the Down to ambush the alone and unwary. At night, they also prey on those walking home from bars or clubs who may not fully have their wits about them. In addition to beating up their victims for money, some of the Bulldogs are engaging in an informal competition over who can steal the most umbrellas - with bonus points awarded for whatever else they feel like. LIERs are worth double points by default, so watch out!

Please read carefully. On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice. To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide: Players can choose whether to assign their character as a Dominant or Submissive on this TDM for the Door Pass for March Applications only. For May's Application round, threads started here may be used as samples however they will not be eligible for a Door Pass in May. Everything had happened so fast that the maid wasn’t sure what to do. Stripped of her glasses due to their ‘examination’ just an added level of difficulty in navigating a new and strange place… She’s only grateful for the plastic clothes on her back and as she toys with the raincoat-like hem along the bottom she can’t help but feel some relief.

Though that is only because she doesn’t realize that these clothes are clear at all and that everyone around her could easily see the naked curves of her body, fresh as the day she was born. Of course in the distance she can see others clearly walking around with their umbrellas and coats, she can’t even begin to analyse the blur of her own body nor the new black line down her neck and chest.

So she’s fine to be ushered along onto the train with the promise of finding her ‘home’ and her belongings, stumbling over the step until she’s pushed into a seat beside a complete blur of a human being.

“I’m sorry! I hope I didn’t get you wet…?”

Itchy. Itchy. Itchy!! How could her wrist be so itchy?!

It wasn’t difficult to figure out that the rain was causing her discomfort. Fingers idly rubbing one of the raw, red spots on her hand. Truthfully she wasn’t unused to rashes, though ones of this extent were considerably more… uncomfortable. Unpleasant. Ever since she had begun working in the Phantomhive estate things like this had become a thing of the past.

“It’s unfittin’, isn’t it?” She sighs, thumbnail picking a bit at the skin as she stares directly down at it, squinting through her glasses that she’s glad to have found back at her place in the down. Her provided raincoat and boots covering the majority of her maid’s uniform from the rain dripping down from the soil above. “I hope it doesn’t get on my stockings…”

She wasn’t sure when she’d be able to get another pair… and that was simply too unpleasant to think about when there were already so many more pressing matters on the mind.

SUPPLEMENTAL INCOME

Mey-Rin had been hesitant to take whatever was given to her, but having been thrusted into a whole new city with no money was enough to finally make her cave. With only her one maid’s uniform, she’d certainly need to gather enough funds to find some sort of replacement in case anything were to happen. What she wasn’t expecting though was the strange, awful wetness between her legs that didn’t seem at all inclined to go away. No amount of cleansing seemed to help… but even that paled in comparison to the fourth day on the medicine.

...When she finds that with and without her glasses her vision has gotten blurrier than before. No matter how close or far away someone might be. The large round lenses rendered completely useless in helping her navigate anywhere.

She finds it is even more difficult to stumble around than it was when she was young and on the streets… she’d felt comfortable enough in the Down until now. Familiar with surviving through less than ideal conditions, but without her fantastic long distance vision she’s finding herself gripping at every wall to guide herself through the streets.

[ There's movement behind her, sudden and sharp, and punctuated by a yelp. Then there's a crash, as the man who'd been about to pick her pocket stumbles forward and falls into someone else, overturning them both.

Nikolai, walking at a jaunty pace, only looks bemused. His umbrella is balanced on his shoulder. He's wearing a rather fetching teal coat, with brass buttons, and a rather sharp-looking set of clothes beneath. Knee-high boots, a sword buckled at his side, a pair of pistols at his waist, and a general air of confidence accompanies him. Not a single blond hair is out of place, and his hazel eyes seem to hold laughter.

There's no line down his throat. That's a small mercy. There are thin gloves covering the lines on his hands, which is another mercy. He hadn't been naked for long. Anyway: ]

One second, she's in the hospital, breaking up with Guerin. The next, she's in front of two doors. Picking one, she steps through to yet another antiseptic medical environment. And for several long, heartrending minutes, she thinks she's been caught. She thinks the blood tests have come up with something strange, some sign of what she is, even if in some small part. She fights at the attendants and, far too quickly for her to beg otherwise, she's sedated just enough for them to continue their work.

They talk and explain and quickly Maria realizes she's not in Roswell anymore.

By now, she's been back to her apartment in the Up, gotten changed, and gone along with the tour. Her mind is all a muddle, a confused haze as she tries to take in all the information being given to her as well as what she's taking away from it all. She sits on the train, watching people enter and exit, the way some are dragged by leashes, one kneeling the entire time before their Dominant.

Maria turns away with a look of disgust, resting her hand over her throat. It's mercifully free of that Submissive mark but she still feels like she's being slowly strangled.

She keeps to the Up. Partially because she's scared, yes, of course; not scared of the Down exactly but unsure of how to prepare herself for the entire city. She keeps to her apartment. But mostly that's because it's only been a few days and she still has very little in the way of an idea of what's going on. She understands what she's been told and she hates every part of it. She despises it. But finally, after two days of simply trying to find what she can on the network, she gives up and goes for a walk.

She hasn't got an umbrella, but she still has the plastic rain attire from her first day. It does what it needs to do, but at a certain point, walking through the park and trying to get some kind of comfort, she slips in a patch of mud and lands hard on her ass. It's not too bad but her hands are covered and she holds them out into the downpour to try and get the worst of the mess off.

She might be cursing to herself, just a little, as she sits there in the mud.

Enrolled in trials. Just what she wants. Maria's no stranger to the concept; she knows her history. Thankfully, while it's enforced, no one seems to be standing over her shoulder demanding that she takes the pills. She does pocket them though, just in case. She's a Dominant and has good housing but she doesn't have a job yet and she knows how far a buck goes.

Still, she doesn't trust them.

"Hey," she calls to someone else coming out of the clinic. She approaches with the bottle of pills in hand. "You're not thinking of taking these, are you?"

Maria does not have an umbrella, but she is quickly caring less and less. Not that she enjoys the effects of the rain, but the more often she gets affected, the more she knows how to control herself. Get herself home.

But it's someone else's unfortunate day when Maria spies two of the Bulldogs attempting to steal an umbrella. It's still in the hands of someone trying desperately to fight them off, but there are two Bulldogs and one other, and Maria cannot tell at first glance whether the single person is capable of defending themself or not.

Setting her jaw, Maria strides down the wide alleyway where they've cornered someone.

"You do not want to deal with me right now," she all but growls. One of the Bulldogs turns to her with a cocky smirk on his lips, the kind she just hates, and without breaking her stride Maria simply knees him in the groin. No questions, no hesitation.

Only now there's one problem: the other Bulldog.

It's a whole year earlier for this version of Guerin. There hasn't been any hospital. There hasn't been a relationship to break up from, even, though he'd had hope. For him, that was some time ago.

And now she's here in front of him, and he almost doesn't believe it.

He asks, as if there's any doubt. As if he wouldn't know the back of her head anywhere, never mind the whole shape of her. He pushes past other passengers, catches her arm, and pulls her around to him. She has no submissive mark - that's a source of relief, and makes him breathe out, and even smile.

And then there's the relief of seeing her, which isn't fair at all. Because he shouldn't be happy that she's here, not knowing what it'll mean and what she'll go through. It doesn't matter. He still is.

The biggest clue that he's from her past will be the fact that the hand touching her arm is broken.

really, not what he likes to think about. not what he's going to think about either, especially with these assholes trying to strip him out of his clothes and reassure him of— what? who the hell cares. cain bares his teeth and growls at them like the caged dog he feels like, punching one in the face hard enough to draw blood. it takes too many of them to subdue him and none at all after they tranq him. or drug him with something. whatever it is, he's compliant after that, and to add insult to injury, they don't even bother dressing him in the cheap plastic shit they're giving everyone else.

cain grabs them but doesn't think to put them on, squinting out at wherever he is. there's some quiet curse in russian as he, at the very least, pulls on the top and yanks the hood over his already soaked hair. how long's it been since he's seen this? rain? maybe never, but he's still too out of it from their drugs to properly care. what's more, he doesn't realize something is wrong until he starts moving through the crowd and some passersby stare at him. his thoughts are a mess, and he's only got one thing on his mind anyway.

they're a tight-knit group, whoever they are. passing off whatever they steal and continuing on like no one's noticed. or will notice. but he's bored, and trying to conceal his mark hasn't gone as well as he'd hoped. still, burning off a little energy that isn't fucking seems like fun. so, without so much as an invite, cain joins the hunt. he continues stalking his original target for a little longer, watching as he moves and spots his next victim.

their hands go for someone's umbrella, and cain's go for the guy's wrist. he cracks it hard, turns to pin his arm and shoves him backwards into the crowd without so much as flinching, reaching up to take the umbrella himself. but not to actually steal it. instead, he keeps his eyes low and crowds up into this person's space, nudging them towards an alleyway. if he can lure more of them in, he can take whatever they've got and see if it's worth anything.

[ Truthfully, Mey-Rin had been aware of people following her for some time. Her fingers wringing idly on the handle of her umbrella that she'd just been lucky enough to be gifted by a kind woman who happened to have a spare during her brief time in the Up... There was a hesitance in outwardly addressing a group like this, though. While she felt more than confident in being able to take care of them from far away, up close was another matter entirely.

And shooting the guns hidden away in her skirt? Up here? That would certainly get her in more trouble than it was worth. Regardless by instinct her fingers start to reach for the fabric before, quite suddenly, Cain enters the fray.

The surprise leaves her fumbling, the loud crinkle of her plastic coat scraping against the wall as she's edged into the nearby alley. ] W-What are you doing!?

[ When the rain first hits in the Up, Clary's ill-prepared. The weather had been cold enough when she arrived that she hadn't anticipated rain so quickly and so one day as she's out exploring, getting a better lay of the land, she's caught without an umbrella. Aside from it being unbelievably cold, she doesn't actually worry too much. Until her clothes start disintegrating, that is, which is really only after a few drops. She'd anticipated getting at least partially soaked while trying to find a shop or building to duck into, but this?

At first, she panics thinking that it's some kind of acid rain, something that will eat away at her skin as well, and she frantically ducks under an awning somewhere. But as she pats the spots where the fabric of her shirt and pants got hit, she realizes that it's not burning her. Her relief is short-lived, however, as a familiar but very unexpected heat starts to thrum through her veins.

Glancing to someone else who was either already beneath the awning and unaffected by the rain or some unlucky soul that got wet and ducked to safety with her, Clary offers what's supposed to be an apologetic smile. It comes out far flirtier than she'd intended, though. ]

I guess even the rain here is abnormal, huh?

[ As the rain continues, Clary manages to get her hands on an umbrella through some sheer stroke of luck. (Although obtaining it was no easy feat; she'd honestly feared for her life at one point.) But she's always been a generous person so when she's walking through the city, in the Up or the Down, and spots someone who isn't quite so lucky, she's quick to catch up to them. ]

Hey, [ she calls out when she's close enough, lifting her umbrella a little higher. ] Need some help getting somewhere?

to her luck (or not, depending on how this goes), an umbrella looms over her before her pants go to, and she turns, seeing the bright haired girl who holds it up high enough to shield them both.

the first thing she notices is the lack of a mark, which — from lorna's experience in dealing with people who hold better advantages than she does (mostly with humans in comparison to mutants) — she isn't seeing as too much of a blessing. still, she tries to see the bright side of the situation, even if her agitated pursing lips don't do much in showing it. ]

England might boast the greatest technology the world has ever seen - but even that was a poor sight in comparison to this.

Lakshmi - or Rani as she has introduced herself to many others here - sits herself down in the seat next to the window, but next to the door. She is here to sightsee, so to speak. But more to know this place that she has woken up in. Taking slow mouthfuls of a drink that has been brought to her as a Dominant. It's an old role. One very familiar to her most of all, to simply walk into any space like she expects to be in command.

She leans back into her seat, one leg propped up over the other. Shoulders rolling flat in the pose as if she is at ease and yet - she is not. Not completely. There is a slow turn of her eyes over people that move past her, as much as over the places as they roll by. At least until there is another Liar near her and who is being shoved along. It's not the first time she has moved into this position, she turns her head like the world bores her and then looks back.

"Unhand them. I need them." Then flat, back to the submissive. "Come here, sit down. I want something."

It books no argument. It's not a Queen's tone of self-entitlement, or a cruel mistress here to punish, no it is a commander flat in order and used to being followed.

ii. rain rain go away
Rain isn't anything she would note, growing up under the crack of the monsoon that split apart the sky in a torrent, or the ceaseless drizzle of England that never quite decided if it wanted to or not.

Though this firmly falls closer to the former than the latter she turns a squint up at the sky. Realising what was about to happen. Right, then, and she pulls her scarf up to veil her head and face.

At least until she realises what is happening. "Shit."

Time to get the hell out of the rain before it takes the rest of her clothes with her. Not that she's pleased, not that she can articulate it as she gets undercover and feels the lightheadedness, but it follows with a furious bite afterwards. Not these clothes. These clothes were all she had left. "Shit, shit, shit."

iii. sticky fingers
It is perhaps not the wisest the young men and women have made in their life. With the long knife strapped to her back that she wears, she would think they might know better. Though in the effort to preserve the clothes she has left, she has changed to something at least a little more familiar. Something to apparently suit what they expect of her now. She really had no intention of starting any fight, but that was true of her life constantly, wasn't it? She never wanted the fight, but oh, how it always came.

But stupidity is a flavour in every land she's ever been in.

No less here apparently. She has the umbrella in hand until the man steps up on her side, and she whirls on him the second he goes to snatch it. Then she turns just as fast and drives her elbow straight into his throat. Listening to that wet gag as he choked on the impact. He wasn't dead, spare her that at least, but he was going to have trouble speaking for the next week. Leaning over his prone form on the wet ground, she goes to take the umbrella back. Business as usual.

Until she hears the footsteps around her, clearing her throat, as she feels them circle against her back. Her eyes turning skyward briefly as the rain came down and began to dissolve her clothes through. "Is this really what we all wish to do this evening?" Sighing in a long frustration out through her nose, she shuts her eyes, and slowly moves her hand to her back and the blade strapped there. One, two, three fingers wrapping around the handle of the knife.

"I suggest if you have a family, you go home, I do not have the money to pay widows yet."

It was only fair, after all, to warn them.

Hearing Rani's voice is not a comfort and, were it not for the way the Dominant currently shoving him along that forces him to pause, he would have continued to suffer the indignance to the end of the journey in order to avoid her. Unfortunately, he is not quite so lucky, and she is greeted to the sight of his steely blue eyes staring her down from where he's been halted upon her request.

"You heard the lady," replies the other Dominant, shoving him inside of the train car with a force that hardly moves him beyond encouraging his brows to pinch further.

"I can assure you, this woman requires nothing from me," Alastair finds himself saying in spite of himself. But the other Dominant has already moved on, clearly happy to be free of a Submissive who appears not so easily corralled thanks to the solidness of his stance. It leaves him little choice but to stand there, looming in the doorway, tiredly contemplating his unfortunate turn of luck.

"You must be over the moon," he finally remarks, the humor in his remark absent from his expression. "This is quite a long way from slinking about in the underground in Whitechapel."

Rain rain go away (Up)

While it hadn't taken long to learn what happens with the rain, it had happened while Dick was out and about in the Up. By the time he gets somewhere out of the acidic water, he's lost his shirt and his jeans have definitely seen better days. A problem getting worse as the droplets run in rivulets over the denim and eat away more of the fabric.

"Are you kidding me?"

Muttering to no one in particular, hoping to outwait the rain, and realizing that isn't going to happen. Wearing the equivalent of short shorts, Dick watches for someone with an umbrella, hoping he might see someone he knows and can get back to his apartment, or anywhere with clothes, before he finds himself naked.

A thought that makes him nearly smile, gesturing for someone with an umbrella to come close as the rain takes effect.

"Hi. Mind helping me out?

Supplemental income

There's nothing in Dick that has plans to take the untested drugs that are being offered to them for money. It's obvious in the short time he's been in the city to know they're likely aphrodisiacs, that they're probably laden with all kinds of uppers and Viagra like supplements.

In the end he took it not for himself and by his own choice but because of another who he volunteered to take their place in the tests.

He's surprised when there doesn't seem to be any kind of sexual side effect the first day, no changes at all that he notices.

Until he wakes up the next day and he's blind.

Suddenly his lessons are the most helpful thing as he makes his way through the city, luckily with an umbrella now, and tries to find his way to the hospital or a the clinic administering the drugs.

He enters a business, pausing at the door as he closes the umbrella.

"Pardon? Can you help me?"

Sticky Fingers - Supplemental continued (Down)

The first person to try and take the umbrella from Dick finds himself on the ground on the second blow, even as he turns to strike another. He can't see them, and he can hear them muttering about that as he closes the umbrella, using it as a staff as he fights off the others.

The good thing is he manages to drive them away, and he's kept his umbrella.

The bad news is he's wet again and already there's holes in his clothes as the water soaks in and eats away at the fabric. He groans, both from the sensation and the knowledge of what's happening.

"What is wrong with this place?!"

"Wh - hey!" Nate shouts, as he's knocked down amidst the fight. He hits the ground with an arm out to break the fall, and he's back on his feet quickly, but the whole thing disrupted his spell. He looks up, seeing the back of the guy who hit him getting an umbrella off some thief, and he rolls his eyes.

"Bloody hell. I like this shirt."

And this jacket, actually, and now they both have holes in them. Nate quickly kicks his spell back in, and it forms a barrier around him. The rain bounces off it, keeping him safe, and he comes up to the offender.

"It likes us naked. You owe me a vintage t-shirt, mate."

Then a pause, as he takes in that face. He knows that face. He's seen it before, covered in sweat.

"Hey! You're that guy from the orgy, Dorothy's friend. Been a minute. You okay?"

Jace was not used to other people putting markings on him without his permission. Certainly not while he was unconscious. Definitely not a marking that did nothing but apparently meant everything. He hadn't reacted particularly well to being examined and had ended up restrained and sedated at some point, although he wasn't sure he remembered things very clearly. He did remember panicking about his stele and being assured it would be found in his assigned housing. Honestly, what was really bothering him was his bond rune. The parabatai bond had flared, sharp and sudden and hot when he'd first woken up, which made no sense. Alec hadn't been with him. He'd have known if he was. Wouldn't he have?

He'd been dressed in clear plastic clothing, which was ridiculous. Not that Jace had a great deal of modesty, but he also wasn't used to walking around essentially naked.

There were rules. A lot of rules. A lot of rules that were embarrassing and seemed rather restrictive. Jace had never really liked rules. He definitely didn't like rules that governed his sex life of all things.

Then there had been a train ride, a whirlwind tour of a land that looked, in a lot of ways, like a watered-down Idris, and now he was back in what was apparently the Down, where he now apparently lived and it looked a lot like a Downworld slum, actually. He knew Downworlders who wouldn't live like this, actually.

The train had dropped him off in some place called Riddler's Square, and now he had to use this thing that was like a very high-tech cell phone to find his way to his new place of residence, so he could get his stele and this things and figure out what to do next. He was a lot calmer than he thought he would be right now. He didn't know if that was because of the drugs still in his system, or because he had an immediate plan of action right now. He could panic later, he supposed.

The rain was pouring down, but he was pretty well covered, although he'd definitely gotten a couple of drops on his hands when he'd been checking his network device. He was pretty sure he knew which direction to head, though.

It's all just a tad overwhelming, and crowded, which are two very good reasons for not shifting into a bird and flying like mad in any random direction. If he were thinking rationally, he would realize that this fucked up dreamscape isn't exactly a place where he should be concerned about keeping his shifting nature a secret. But he's scared, frankly, and cold and just... numb from shock and cannot make heads nor tails of the public transport system.

"I hate cities," he mutters to himself as he plops down in his assigned seat on the train.

Tyrell snuck into the park, looking suspicious as hell but trying to be careful as he picked out one of the few trees big enough to hide him, where he could strip down and quickly shift into a crow. He flew around the city a bit, trying to test the boundaries and failing, before returning to the aforementioned tree only to find...

Well, at least his shorts were still there.

Cursing to himself -- this would never happen back home -- he tugs on his shorts and toes on his sandals and tries to jog as best he can through the rain back to his motel. He's soaked through before he gets anywhere near. He feels warm, but not from the rain, just from himself, his own body, and he's got an itchy feeling all over. He rubs his hands over his arms, using blunt nails to try and get some relief.

Here's the thing: Hawai'i doesn't have much in the way of dangerous animals. Sharks and jellyfish? Sure. Landbased predators? Thin on the ground. One time he tried to study a lion at the zoo, but all it did was lay there and flip-flop its tail around. As a consequence, Tyrell isn't sure he's got the wear with all to really terrify anybody with that shape.

What he does have at his disposal is a German Shepherd form. And that's what he shifts into when he sees someone cornered by a pair of Bulldogs in the afternoon.

He growls and snaps and lunges for the leg of one of them, praying that he doesn't have a knife or a gun or anything but his fragile masculinity to protect him. It's worth a shot.

Jim has to admit that this is not exactly the kind of bright world that most people would be excited about. He's not excited about it either, taking in the sight on the train with a certain wide-eyedness in his look that betrays his newness to the city.

And then there's the sub, this one not accompanied by a Dominant that he can see, or that he cares enough to check. He taps the seat next to him as he makes eye contact, smile lifting up the corner of his lips. "You can sit here. I promise I won't bite."

02. Rain Rain Go Away

Jim can admit now that he picked a poor time to check out the Down, to see the other part of the city. Heading underground to get away from the rain had seemed like a good idea. He's now faced with yet another time he acted without thinking about it, and he just saw a person get mugged for their umbrella.

He ducks into a bar, noticing his clothing isn't quite as...there as it had originally been. He sticks a guileless smile on his face and offers it to whoever he sees.

"I'm going to assume this place doesn't have a dress code."

03. Sticky Fingers

In the Bulldog's favor is the fact that Jim is drunk, and alone not just on his walk home but alone on the city. In Jim's favor is the fact that he's been itching for a fight at least since he stepped into the city, and he's coming out swinging.

"That all you got?" He takes a swing at one of the gang members.

Trains existed back in Mey-Rin's world, but this was all so... different. Her first experience on this particular train had been awful; glasses missing thanks to that awful full body examination accompanied by the uncomfortable clear fabric coat and pants against her naked body just made the entire experience even worse than it had a right to be.

Now though, full maid uniform on underneath her provided plastic raincoat she felt a bit more comfortable. She can't see Jim too clearly even with her glasses, but he is more than visible enough. The red-headed maid gives a slight bow before she moves to sit beside him, hands smoothing the crinkly, plastic fabric under her bottom as she settles.

"Thank you, sir... I hope it won't be too much of a bother."

In many ways, Ryder looks the part of a Dominant. He's tall, and he moves with a grace backed up by his pointed ears and the gold highlights in his hair, and an authority that is independent of all of that. When they order the submissives out he stands as well.

"I'll find my own way back," he tells any of the city guards who seem concerned, although once the train has continued on he's left standing in Riddler's square, and he does seem momentarily bewildered.

"They expect people to live like this?" It's said beneath his breath, but not quietly enough to avoid being heard if there's someone close to him.

B. Supplemental Income

Ryder reports to the clinic as required, but he certainly has no intention of going along with medical experimentation. "I am Ryder of Clan Sebac, Third in the House of Devon, High Lord of the Southern Rise Court, San Diego. Whoever gave you the impression that I might agree to this was sorely mistaken."

He's offended by the very implication of it, and it shows, will continue to show before he storms out in a huff.

C. Sticky Fingers

While not the attempted victim of this particular mugging, Ryder isn't about to simply walk past what he sees happening. Instead he strides over, armed with nothing other than his stubborn insistence that this is wrong and his status as Dominant.

"Let go of them," he says. He tries to think of what Kai would say, of how someone who was armed would react. "The trouble's not worth it."

Umeda had students who did cosplay so it wasn't like he'd never seen odd clothing choices, although he had a creepy feeling they were real, not prosthetics. Still, otherwise, the guy seemed ok. His thoughts are foggy and listless as he's examined, his clothes confiscated. He flusters, unused to having his skin bared for anyone to see but himself in the dark. The clothes he's given are laughable, but if he wants to regulate his temperature, it's what he'll deal with.

He doesn't stay indoors long, however, and finds himself on the train, staring listlessly at his bare lap. With such see-through clothing, his scars are all on display, crossing his flesh over and over and only sparing his groin, inner thighs, nipples, and from the neck upward. His hands cover his lap for modesty, but he does nothing other than observe his surroundings with a listless gaze.

He's not really paying much attention to the tour, too focused on not making eye contact with people. His fingers twiddle together over and over, incessantly.

As the next stop is reached, he looks up in reflex, around at the people getting on and off, reflexively checking for danger. Finding none, he crosses one leg over the other, tightly, and taps his foot to the floor.

A person's scent curls close to him as someone sits down, and he reflexively shifts away, only to bump into someone on the opposite side.

"Ah! Sorry. I didn't-- I'm sorry."

His cheeks burn and he doesn't make eye contact, but he does glance over at the person, staring at their mouth to check their expression that way. His ever-changing irises take on the person's lip and skin colors as a result.


Rain Rain Go Away (CW: tentacles, aphro)
When Glenn's clothing is mercifully returned to him, it's with great relief that he can cover himself again. It's enough to make him want to smile.

Out and about, he doesn't bother with using his umbrella as the rain strikes his hair and drips down his scalp. It's nice to feel something that he hasn't caused himself. Enough that he finds a little place out of the way of most people to just stand and enjoy it, his hair taking on the faint scent of wet fur and feathers and something distinctly other.

But it feels pretty good. Enough that he's getting chills and feeling warmer underneath the pseudo leather-latex flightsuit he's wearing. Instead of using the umbrella he's carrying to cover his head, he uses it to cover the area in front of his groin, but it can't quite hide the fact that there's more than just a dick there - there are thin, worm-like things squirming under the stretchy material. Some reach as high as his hipbones, curling around it.

Maybe he should take a walk? But the rain feels good on his head.... It would be weird to not cover his head with the umbrella while he walked, right?

But it feels good. It's a small pleasure that he hasn't felt in some months.

Unfortunately, he doesn't notice that his flightsuit is slowly dissolving. Oops!

Conner did not have good experiences with people in lab coats. His automatic reaction was to fight his way back out. But whoever they were, they seemed prepared even for people like him, since they managed to strip him out of his clothes and get Krypto tied docilely in a corner anyway.

When Conner was finally was sent off, he was bemused and angry. But none the worst for the wear, physically or mentally - as far as he could tell. They'd given him a phone like Gar had at the Tower. Krypto seemed fine too, if no happier about the brief imprisonment and forced examination than Conner. He didn't like lapcoats either.

He let himself be steered toward the train just because some part of his mind thought it would be better to know the layout of the place he was than to just blindly stumble around. He realized about halfway there that the clothes he had, on top of being uncomfortable, were see through, and he puts his hands modestly over his crotch. Last time he'd woken up without pants, people seemed to want things covered.

Or he tried to keep covered. When someone stood on the train platform yelling at someone else and wouldn't move, Conner just physically picked him up and moved him and then went onto the train. "Excuse me," he said, though it didn't sound particularly polite since Conner thought the guy was a jerk.

On the train he stared around, blatantly curious, Krypto hopped up on the seat next to him, doing the same thing, his head tilting at the sight of a Submissive on a leash, apparently judgemental about it. Conner petted his head absently and tried to make sense of where he was and if it was all real.

Conner had found his clothes and some more things in the apartment they said was his. It didn't feel like his, but it was somewhere to stay until he found his way out of here.

He didn't really like staying there though, and so far he was usually out walking around both the Up and the Down. In his head he was making a map of everything, but it was a subconscious effort. Mostly Conner just tried to ... figure things out.

He was in the Up today though, near the train, when he heard someone yell. It was far enough away that it wasn't likely anyone but him could hear. He oriented himself toward it and then ran, speeding his way there. He found someone trying to hold onto an ... umbrella? Maybe? While four other people circled them and tried to yank it away, laughing. Conner scowled and stepped up, grabbing the first of the four by the scruff like an angry cat and tossing him aside and into a nearby trash can. The second went sailing after him. When the third tried to hit him, he just made a pained sound like something in his hand snapped, and then backed off on his own, the four following him and then scattering.

Conner picked up the umbrella they'd managed to wrest away but dropped and offered it back to the person they'd stolen it from. "Here."

One minor advantage of being able to vibrate the way he could was that once he realized what the water was doing, he could just keep it from touching him. But when he saw a body hit a pile of trash cans, instincts that would never vanish had him running towards the trouble rather than away. He got there to see that things were handled, and in a somewhat familiar way. It was the crunching hand that almost clinched it for him, golden eyes wide in surprise as he watches the young man return an umbrella, waiting until that's done before he quietly asks the question that is racing through his thoughts.

"Conner?"

[ god, and he thought home was a hazard. at least at home he's more or less the king of his domain; he knows the rules, he knows how to deal with the various people that work for him, his unnatural family, the creatures that make a home of his land and the hotel. here, though? it's all new, and if his stress levels were bad before, now they're through the damn roof. the only thing that would have made it worse is if he'd wound up labeled a submissive. at least as a dominant, he supposes he has some ability to choose things for himself in this society.

the effects of the rain are definitely new. when he notices holes beginning to spot his shirt, a part of him panics, checking his skin for damage. but it seems to only be damaging his clothing, eating away at it even as he ducks out of the rain and into a building, shivering, feeling too warm in a way he hasn't really indulged in years. the skin being revealed beneath tattered cloth is pale and startlingly scarred for such a small, thin, unassuming man.

How often can I expect to run into enchantments, curses, elder gods, or irritable wendigos here? I've heard some things already and I was sort of hoping this would be a break. The rain doesn't leave me particularly optimistic.

[ this place proves to be even worse than it originally lets on. as if the dark mark along her neck wasn't enough of a downfall in terms of how she's treated (with little difference to what people often think of mutants in her own world), lorna originally expects a little rain isn't going to do much damage and tries to race across the street so she can get closer to her residential building.

what she doesn't immediately notice is the way her clothes seem to loosen, her arms gradually chilling more and more under the downfall of rain, until — she realizes her jacket has disappeared all together. ]

[ peering up, she realizes the fall of the rain drops seem to correlate to the vanishing fabric, and she races to the nearest shelter, her timing not nearly fast enough before the entirety of her bra disappears.

now soaked and topless, her palms cover her breasts, a visible snarl on her face as she swears under her breath, wondering how the hell she's even going to get back at this rate. maybe if she's lucky, someone has an umbrella to let her under. ]

[It takes a bit of time for the reality of the situation to sink in. His clothes are disappearing, rather quickly, for no apparent reason. He's been here for the length of a day, not entirely certain as to what exactly "here" is. Doesn't look familiar and Victor doubts dozing off on public transport and awakening in an unfamiliar city with denizens of various shapes and sizes, and he means that in the loosest term, counts as another city in New Jersey.

Last he checked, seeing a woman walk around with a tail and cat ears meant the circus was in town.

The water. That's right. The water is weird. Victor tests his hypothesis about the water being the reason his clothes are disappearing until all that remains are the half-eaten soles of his shoes. Something he easily steps out of, naked as the day he was born, on a street, in the middle of who knows where.

[The rain leaves after a few days. Victor gets an apartment allotted to him, no clothes though, and the government staff, or whatever they are, that set him up with the place give him a flyer about a quick way to earn money.

None of this felt like home. Purgatory was a small town, nothing even similar to where he's at now in the Down, or the Up from what he'd seen of it. Some parts felt familiar enough to set Bobo at ease, even if he couldn't say it was all that comfortable to be dealing with the... strange rain and the lack of umbrellas to keep himself guarded against it. It was also nothing he'd taken overly seriously until he found himself caught in a downpour with nowhere close to duck under.

The acidic water eats away his sleeve, drawing his attention in curiously. "... Huh."

That's new.

It does have him ducking down anything he thinks will cover him. "I don't exactly have a change of clothes," he complains to no one in particular.

"Is this something I should expect often?" This, he does direct towards whoever is nearest.

He's starting to feel an itch on top of it. One that he tries to ignore.

He sighed and shook the bottle, listening to the pills rattle with a scowl. His eyes slid to the person next to him, sharp and calculating behind his glasses.

"I'm going to need your name and some other pertinent details. I need to keep track of what happens when you take these pills." What better way to find out what they did than to do research? Umeda didn't mind a bit of effort when it netted him useful results. Now he just had to track down more people. The larger the sample size, the better the results!

He glared at the person in front of him, a second away from growling. Umeda wasn't a pushover. He was an ass, a lazy ass, but he didn't take shit from anyone he wasn't related to and he'd learned to fight a long, long time ago. There were no powers, no magic, just an angry man who knew the best places to hit to do the most damage. Being a doctor had some advantages.

Umeda wasn't scared, he was angry as hell and he was willing to get ground into the sidewalk if it meant working out some of that aggression. Like hell he was giving his god damned umbrella to some fucking assholes!

In addition, I'd like to begin employment immediately. For some decades now, I've worked in archival storage, and I have an eidetic memory, so jobs that make use of such things would be greatly appreciated. [ As a long-standing fan of the distressed look, even she has limits. To ward off the eroding effects of the rain, she leaves her leather jacket at the motel and takes to wearing the plastic one she was given prior to entering the Down. Pants, too (sprayed black). Unable to get her hands on an umbrella, her shielding is functional but imperfect. Chips of paint flake off her pants. Droplets of water sneak under the collar and slowly eat away at the shirt underneath.

She does herself no favors when she starts to idly scratch at her neck and chest. Water broadens and lowers the neckline of her shirt and angry red scratches are on full display across her collarbone. As much as she tries to stop, she finds herself failing again and again, nails raking into her skin whenever her mind is preoccupied.

During the day, she can be spotted throughout the Down with her camera around her neck or picking up menial jobs. At night she haunts Mendacity, where she has trouble sitting still as the itch spreads to her arms and stomach. Hunched forward as she scratches at the back of her neck, she suddenly straightens and hisses, ] Shit!

[ Lowering her hand, her fingertips are slick with blood. Jess heads to the restroom to wash it off and dab blindly at the wound with paper towel. Give a girl a hand? ]

[ Leaving the train station on her way to the motel, Jess is one such alone and unwary mark of the Bulldogs. For a slender woman, she packs the punch of a Mack truck. They get more than they bargained for with her, and after repressing so much rage at her recent circumstances, she can't estimate herself properly either. Jess sends one mugger flying to bowl down another. The last of the three brandishes a lead pipe, the force and inertia of which is swallowed up by her halting grip. Wrenched away, Jess knocks her attacker down with the back of her fist.

That should be the end of it. Instead she picks him up and tosses him against a nearby dumpster. Jerkily scrambling up to flee, she seizes him again and pins him to the wall. Fists coiled in his collar, she raises him from the ground until his feet are flailing. ]

[ with the rain soaking people through to the skin, even with the protection of plastic to try and curb the effects, the smell of blood has been stronger as kisa walks through the streets on the rare occasion she's stepped outside. it's made things difficult; she's not exactly hiding that she's a vampire, but she's not advertising it, and so far it's been working for her.

that had to change eventually.

she hears the commotion as she's walking back to the train from the club she dances at, and she's careful to keep her footsteps light as she makes her way to the alley where the man has cornered a tall, pale woman who's also bearing the mark of a submissive. only he's very quickly gone from predator to prey, which is made evident when the woman throws him against the dumpster, raising him about a foot off the ground.

she's not stupid. she knows the attack was provoked; she'd come into the alley when she'd heard him starting to harass her and she's heard about the groups of gangsters cornering and robbing people. but there's something off about how the woman's fighting back; something she can recognize because she's done it, too. that kind of anger is as poisonous as it is cathartic, because whoever this is, they're not the person that you'd like to turn it on.

within moments she's caught up to them, pulling the man free of the woman's grasp only to hold him tight by the throat and roar in his face, her appearance having shifted into full culebra form. she hisses in his face before leaning in close. ]

[ the man protests, trying to turn things around on her. kisa tightens her grip, letting her claws dig into and puncture the skin of his throat. ]

You're lying. Leave, or I'll throw you back to her. And if I hear you do this to anyone else, I'll tear out your throat.

( it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows her at all, but blue has found herself in a fight. the train has been challenging for a number of reasons, not least of all the kneeling submissives, and she's been a simmering pot just waiting to boil over.

in the end, a very tall dominant berates his submissive for what seems to be the grievous error of swaying with the train. they aren't even particularly loud about it, but blue is close enough to overhear, and it's game over then. )

( unfortunately, bad weather doesn't seem to mean much to blue. she'd admittedly been caught out by the melting clothes problem, but when she takes to the streets a second time, she's well prepared. gum boots, that weird rain mac they'd given her on arrival – though notably different, she's clothed under it now – and a grim set look of determination see her through the worst of the weather, until she can get her hands on an umbrella.

that look of determination falters pretty quickly when she sees someone caught out without as much luck, though. she hesitates, scowls, and then walks over. )

If you don't use one of these you're going to be naked soon. ( she helpfully supplies, which hopefully explains why she looks so unhappy about all of this. still, she offers the umbrella anyway, stepping closer and holding it out. she's too short to be particularly adept at sharing an umbrella with most people, but she'll be damned if she's actually letting it go. too many roaming thieves around here. )

[It's pure luck that Noah happens to be riding the train today when he usually doesn't. The only reason he didn't materialize back at home after work is that he's picked up some bouncy balls and a worm-on-a-string for I Spy, and then he missed the elevator—and it's a good thing he did. He's all the way down at the other end of the car, so he doesn't see Blue straight away. But her raised voice carries to where he's sitting and his eyes go wide. This is the sort of thing he'd have nightmares about if he slept.

He stumbles out into the aisle, nearly falling in some Dominant's lap. The fuzzy cat toy clutched in his hand flops in the air around him as he hustles toward the commotion.

Man, he really hopes Blue isn't a sub...!

He skids to a stop beside her and grabs her elbow, half to get her attention and half to remain upright.]

Running for shelter has left him soaking wet, and his shirt and jeans are beginning to disintegrate, clinging to him in shreds and his skin feeling tight and hot.

Johnny sighs deeply, pushing wet hair out of his face as he peers up at the sky from the overhang he'd taken shelter beneath, and then shoots a rakish smile at the person beside him. ]
