Even when she turns to look back at him, Kaz doesn't look away. His gaze is ordinarily a predatory one, sharp and narrowed, seeking out the nearest pigeon to fleece. But that's not the look in his eye now. He's frozen like a doe in the path of a speeding carriage, like he can't decide whether he's coming or going.

It's the fever, certainly, that's got his judgment scrambled. The signals are firing all wrong, convincing him to chase after the very thing he wants to run from. But identifying the sickness doesn't cure the symptom. If it did, he would have been freed of his affliction years ago.

I want you, he should tell her. Not because of some contract or because it gets him a dry room in a lux palace. There's no threat or authority that can make him do anything. He wants to please her because it's all he's ever wanted to do. All the rest of this only gives him no excuse to hide behind. If the desire and incentive is there, then what's stopping him besides cowardice? ]
