It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy. This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses. To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues. ... and you're here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity. After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a clear plastic top and pants along with clear plastic boots to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation. If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You're a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You're a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you'll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms. ...At least, this would normally be the case. Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new and old arrivals. The weather is stormy and miserable. There's flooding. Quite a bit of it.

(cw: voyeurism, privacy violations) Ordinarily, new arrivals to Duplicity are sent on a tour of the city by train, but with the tracks currently underwater this month's tour is a little different. Instead they will assemble in a conference room on the third floor of the Orientation Center and watch a video that highlights the many beautiful locations of the Up, such as White Wall Bridge, Fiddler's Square, and North Park, complete with cheesy voiceover. The video also displays some… less beautiful landmarks in the Down, though that segment is shorter and much less complimentary. After the video concludes, it's time for the interactive portion of the tour! Tablets will be handed out, though there aren't enough for everyone so some people will have to share. These tablets are set up with a program allowing characters to look through various cameras in public areas around the city. They can click from one camera view to the next to explore or tap the 'randomize' button and see where they end up. There seems to be a glitch with the latter feature, however, that enables it to tap into camera feeds that aren't part of the carefully curated tour path. Security cameras in the lobbies and hallways of apartment buildings, hidden cameras in hotel rooms, webcams, and even the cameras on the communication devices that they all carry — any of these might pop up amidst the regular street views. Characters may suddenly find themselves a silent third party to a video call or spying on another LIER in an intimate moment. The question is, will they keep watching or click away?

Due to the ongoing watery crisis, temporary accommodations have been arranged for until new arrivals are able to move into their assigned housing. Officials explain that the Submissive housing in the Down is partially flooded out and that the Dominant building in the Up, while not faring nearly as badly, has been experiencing electrical issues. As the apartments available to new Dominants are mainly on higher floors, this means an exhausting climb when the power goes out. In either case, the situation is not ideal. For now, Submissives are given blankets and sleeping bags in a hastily cleared-out hotel ballroom. There's plenty of floor space to spread out, but little else with which to create a sense of privacy. An adjoining set of restrooms provides the basic facilities (including a lube dispenser!) though a bath in the sink is as good as it gets for hygiene. Several room service carts loaded with bottled water and suggestively-named cheap pre-packaged snacks are refilled twice daily at meal times. If the Submissives sheltering here wish to better their circumstances, well, perhaps they should find a Dom to shack up with and sign a contract. Dominants each get a room to themselves, though LIEs haven't exactly sprung for the fanciest accommodations. Five star? Not even close. The rooms are small and garishly decorated, with minimal amenities. There's a tv on the dresser that only gets five channels — four of which are porn and the remaining channel is local news and weather. (No matter which channel you're watching, the immediate forecast is: wet.) At least they have a full bathroom. The hotel isn't serving food, but a few complimentary meal vouchers for a nearby restaurant can be found on the nightstand along with a 'sexy' welcome basket consisting of lube packets and a cheap vibrating dildo. All Dominants are strongly encouraged to visit the emergency Submissive shelter and rescue a Sub in need. PSAs featuring sad stock photos will be sent to their devices as a reminder.

(cw: aphro, dub-con) With the steadily rising water and heavy rain, Duplicity’s utilities are feeling the strain of being increasingly waterlogged. The city is dotted with pockets of temporary power outages lasting a few hours at a time. It’s concerning, but there isn’t much city officials and engineers can do about their soaked infrastructure. All they can do is try to manage the blackouts and pray that a citywide one doesn’t befall the Up and Down. The area where the Orientation Center is situated is unfortunately prone to losing power, and those characters who decide to take the elevator instead of the stairs while attending Orientation may find themselves stopped in the dark with the doors sealed shut. The emergency system kicks in after a minute with dim red lighting and a voice over the intercom tells those trapped to keep calm. In addition to the emergency lights, a recording of smooth jazz will play over the intercom and air laced with a special blend of aphrodisiac will filter into the enclosed space. One last message over the intercom from whoever is on the other end reassures the stuck parties that the main power should be back on in an hour and in the meantime they should relax. So, what will you do with your trapped elevator buddy? You may find yourself wanting to sit next to them and open up about your feelings. Maybe you're feeling blabby, ready to get some things off your chest, or maybe you're more touchy-feely and you'd prefer to let your body do the talking. You have time, so why not take comfort in one another while waiting for the power to resume?

(cw: aphro, altered mental states, dub-con, exhibitionism) With the water level now at an all time high and with no sign of stopping, the locals are trying to avoid going out in it as much as possible. This need to stay dry (or at least not wade through murky water on the streets) has created quite a few job opportunities for those looking to make a quick buck. Whether it’s helping transport someone on a makeshift raft by pushing them slowly through the street or delivering food and other orders to customers, the demand is there. New arrivals will be offered these gigs, regardless of designation. Whether they decide to take on the jobs is up to them, but the incentive to do so includes an offer of better accommodations in a penthouse suite of Somass Hotel for those who provide the best service. It’s certainly an upgrade compared to the other lodgings that are available. Of course, there’s good reason the locals want to stay as dry as possible, aside from the annoyance of soggy clothes and pruney fingers. The murky water is contaminated with run-off chemicals from the waterlogged storm drains, that, with extended exposure, may cause irrational and impulsive behavior, especially with regards to sex. Get in an argument? Better fuck to make up. Want to bargain for a deal? Use your body. See someone whose rain boots are pretty stylish? Compliment them by offering yourself. Cause a problem with sex? Solve it with… even more sex. There’s also an even more unexpected side effect that’s cropped up - the urge to sing and dance in the rain, as if putting on an impromptu burlesque show. Wet clothes will be shed and tossed aside in the fervor of the act, baring it all to the elements and whatever audience might’ve formed in the process to watch the spectacle.

Please read carefully. On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice. When apping a third character, two questions:

(1) Can double AC come from the same AC period as the app round (i.e., if I have double July AC by the end of the July app round, can I use that for my double AC)?

(2) If not, can samples/door pass from the July TDM be used for the August app round for applying for a third? I didn't realize I might not be able to use July AC for my double to app a third. Poor planning, but I would like to still be able to use the designation/CR whenever I do app.

he snatches the tablet he's ostensibly sharing with a fellow newcomer out of their hands and skips fervidly through various feeds until one comes up that appears to be intruding on a private confessional, intimate and fragile. the dominant in the video fights back tears, and loki watches rapturously. ]

02. pillow fight?

[ on the way into the ballroom, loki scoffs at the plastic dispenser that squirts personal lubricant into his hand instead of hand sanitizer. he pats one of his fellow LIERs on the shoulder to wipe it off onto their shirt as he moves further into the room, gathering up a bundle composed of a single blanket and pillow.

when someone else gives up their spot on the floor to use the bathroom, he casually plucks their blanket up to add to the folded pile of his own. he's not bothered by the fact that everyone here is in the same boat as a submissive; he'll take his advantage wherever he can get it. ]

What is interesting, however, is scanning through the random cameras on the tablet. It starts off as dull as the other tour did, mostly shots of the streets, but then -- then. He stumbles upon a camera capturing a quite passionate couple in the midst of a rather intimate act. "Well," he says, finally looking intrigued. "They seem quite enthusiastic, don't they?"

Louis is hardly enthusiastic about visiting the newly set-up Submissive shelter, but the steady barrage of notifications popping up on his device had finally begun to wear on his already considerable sense of guilt — and so he comes in hopes that a visit would silence it all. He's doing his best to be unobtrusive as he wanders the outskirts of the large ballroom, his dark hair and dark coat still dripping from the rain, when he hears a voice that he knows as well as the sound of his own suddenly racing heart. Louis turns, drawn to the sound of Lestat's complaining like a lightning rod.

He's at his maker's side in an instant, eyes wide and eager and disbelieving. One slightly trembling hand reaches out to touch him, but then draws back against Louis's chest, uncertain.

"Lestat?" And then he shakes his head, because of course it's him. He takes a breath, and tries to compose himself, to not simply embrace him here and now in front of everyone. "Your grievances carry, you know. Some people are trying to sleep."

No amount of meditative know-how could even hope to bring calm to the experience of waking up in some twisted nightmare version of what his life was before becoming a Master of Mystic Arts.

The questions pile up through the confusion and instinctive panic that rushes through him as processing is undertaken, only some of them managing to make it past his lips and even those not really receiving an answer.

And then, just like that, he's out in the foyer of an unfamiliar building wearing very little indeed with a car parked a little ways away with the engine running.

It's been a while since Stephen has felt like he's going through a rollercoaster with no safety equipment on, though at the very least it's not wholly unfamiliar.

For a long moment, he sort of stays in place, grounding himself in the moment, feeling the ambient temperature of his surroundings, the smells, the sounds, the scratchy feel of the paper gown against his skin. And then, he sighs and casts a sideways glance at the person approaching.

If they're wearing a gown like he is, he says, "Well this is awkward. One of us is going to have to change."

If they're dressed in their own clothes, he says, "One of us sure did misread the dress code."

Always eyes watching you and the voice enveloping you. Asleep or awake, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or bed — no escape. Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters in your skull.

The quote echoes through Stephen's mind in its entirety as he slowly, reluctantly swipes through the viewing options. He can quote just about anything he's read at one point or another, even classic novels they were made to read in school, but it seems like an incredibly apt one.

There isn't much to indicate on his face his feelings in any direction, his expression generally impassive as he continues to look through the camera-eye on the tablet before glancing over at whoever happens to be closest and without access to a viewing device themselves.

"It's not exactly Google Earth, but right now I guess this is the best we're going to get," he shifts over, making some space beside him, "Wanna 'walk' around the city with me, so to speak?"

Stephen really isn't in the habit of taking in strays and the sad footage of bedraggled, sad-looking Submissives doesn't do terribly much for him except make him want to get out of the dingy hotel room that's been provided.

Snatching up a couple of the meal tickets, Stephen sweeps his way out of the room and heads down the stairs.

When he hits the floor where the ballroom is that's being offered to Submissives, he nods at the first person who happens to be close by with a dark mark down their throat.

"Yeah, all right, you sure look like they'd pick you to film in black and white to put to Sarah McLachlan. Come one, let's get some food. My treat. You can tell me if you know anything about this place yet."

And, honestly, who's going to argue with a guy who shows up wearing a cloak that moves on its own?

Sure, he could have walked off the meal he went out to get, but the elevator is inviting enough and, more to the point, was operational when Stephen returned to the hotel entrance.

Was operational is little comfort when the thing drags to a slow stop and the music starts to filter through.

Overall, it's fair to call Stephen a pretty stoic, aloof type of guy, tending to keep his hands to himself and his overall attitude a little on the unapproachable side.

It's odd then when he finds his gaze drifting over to the other occupant of the elevator every so often along with a vague twitchy want to reach out for them.

Stephen grits his teeth, closes his eyes, tilts his head up toward the ceiling and hisses out a faint curse under his breath. This place isn't playing around with the sex focus.

If he tries to block this out, it'll just... go away. Right? Or the elevator will start again. Right?

Apparently the sorcerer equivalent of helping an old lady cross the street is offering someone a cloak-related ride out of reach of the water. Whether they're just trying to get somewhere themselves or looking like they're stuck trying to deliver something, Stephen is feeling... well, charitable is probably a strong word, but capable of offering assistance is probably more accurate. Capable, and impulsive.

Gliding over with the particular brand of extra as fuck that only a Master of the Mystic Arts with a levitating cloak can manage, Stephen reaches out.

While there is part of him that can appreciate the enthusiasm of the welcome, Kingsley is still a little dazed as he's stripped down. There is something very disorienting, and terrifyingly familiar, about waking up and not knowing where he actually is.

"All you had to do was ask," he laughs, just a bit breathless after the thorough examination. Rather than getting his clothes back, however, he's offered... an entirely clear outfit. Well, the option is this or go naked, right? And he's warned that it's rather wet out there. Being on display has never particularly bothered him, and there is no need to let it start now. So, he dons his new clothes and heads off to orientation.

Kingsley absently runs his hand over the mark that is apparently on his throat, a dark line among the otherwise colorful tattoos that decorate him. It follows a scar and he wonders if the scar itself is obscured or if it cuts through the... ink? He doesn't feel sore, he doesn't know if it's actually a tattoo or something else. Sitting back in his chair, he listens rather intently to the rules of the program. He glances around the room, noticing some people have normal clothes and just as many are wearing the same clear plastic that he is. Who are they? Citizens? He has more questions than answers, but going with the flow feels like the only real option if he wants anything more than patronizing chiding. And he is utterly conspicuous in this crowd.

Maybe you're sitting next to him during the lecture, or maybe he's partnered with you during Doms and Subs 101 or the part about being good partners.

An actual tour might have been better. He's starting to chafe under being trapped inside. Even if it's raining, even if the city is flooded, Kingsley would rather be able to move around more than shuffling from room to room. He'd rather take his chances in the water.

Instead, he's watching a tour, looking bored even as the new arrivals are told all the lovely things about the city. At least it isn't long, and he's curious enough to pay attention when the tablets are handed out. He doesn't get one - possibly for the best - but someone next to him does and, soon enough, Kingsley is leaning over trying to look.

"I don't see why we can't go ou--oh. Hello."

That doesn't look like something that should be part of the tour. Kingsley tips his head.

"Do you think they're going to get tired in that position?" They probably shouldn't be seeing this, he has no idea if these people even know they're being watched, but he is fascinated.

It isn't the worst place he's ever slept. Still, Kingsley walks slowly into the ballroom as submissives left and right find somewhere to settle in. His tail flicks as he considers his options. Eventually, he ends up unrolling his sleeping bag near a wall. It's not much protection - at all - but it feels better than being in a completely open space.

At least he has his clothes back.

For a while, he sits against the wall, watching the comings and goings of other submissives as they try to settle in. He catches sight of someone looking a little lost and whistles - loudly. When they look his way, he jerks his head to the empty floor next to him.

"There's space over here."

Later, Kingsley gets a deck of colorful cards out and carefully practices shuffling them. Now and then he'll look at one, then slip it back into the deck to shuffle it again, trying to lose it.

Okay. The elevator was a mistake. Kingsley is willing to admit that when the lights begin to flicker. He crosses his arms, staring up at the lights like the way they dim and brighten will tell him anything.

Then the elevator shudders. And then the lights turn red.

His gaze snaps to the intercom as a very placid voice tells them to stay calm and that things will be sorted out soon. Kingsley leans back against a wall as the music starts to play. He can feel heat creeping through him as the voice again tells them that things should be moving again in an hour.

"Know any fun ways to kill time?"

After a few days, the temptation of better accommodations is enough to get him out into the flood. The high water doesn't really bother him, beyond being vaguely concerned about what he can't see in the murky flood. But doing some dirty work isn't above him, and, all told, it's still better than being stuck inside.

Besides, delivering food is a perfectly reasonable and helpful thing to do. Even if it means occasionally pushing through waist-deep water while holding a basket or bag over his head. Now and then he lets his cargo sit on his head, some of the weight distributed by his horns. He trudges into shallower water and checks the address again. When he gets there, he bangs on the door.

"Delivery!"

Maybe if he's lucky, he'll get a tip?

Magnus hates orientation. He always makes the best of it, puts on a sharply cheerful show when he can, whispers his snide remarks when he can't, but the fact that he's back here once again while being a "graduate" after so long a time makes his blood simmer.

His eyes roam over the gathering of newcomers, looking for someone to assist and reassure (best as he can) when they fall on a striking and familiar figure. He smiles, lips pulling into a full blown grin before he remembers:

Just because it's Molly doesn't mean he'll remember Magnus.

But there's still a chance.

The smile doesn't fade as he strides over to the tiefling after a lecture, assigning himself as Molly's partner for the next one-on-one training.

"Care to see a trick?" he asks, curious gaze watching the other's face for recognition. He takes in the scar with barely any sort of acknowledgment, no lingering pause. It's different of course to how he knows Mollymauk, but Magnus has also had experience with people coming back to the city after living some time in their own world. And he knows better than to ask about such a thing, especially of this person.

[ well, sadly the difference in accommodations is familiar enough, it just looks different back home. so despite bram's sick exhaustion, how much every inch of him aches, he soon makes his way down to the temporary submissive sleeping area, and eases down beside the first that looks maybe a little shell-shocked.

At least instead of doctors or workers or scientists or something (he's not really sure) a lot of the people here look as underdressed and confused as he does. They hand out tablets, but skip over Archie, since they don't have enough to go around. After a second he steps in closer to the person nearest him who got one. "Is it okay if I look with you?" he asks, trying to be as carefully polite as it's possible to be when you're standing there, half naked and confused and would really like to punch someone in charge and run out the nearest door.

He almost rethinks that when he finds out it's all in murky, gross looking run-off water and constant rain. But he's been in worse, so he'll live. Plus it's delivering food and stuff, so it gives him a chance to learn his way around without people watching him.

They give him directions and an app to help get around, but he still ends up turned around a few times, and gets increasingly irritated about it every time without really knowing why. The crate of food he's delivering gets him snapped at for taking so long, which leaves him simmering, through the next delivery.

[ Carl, like pretty much any other new arrival, has fairly mixed-leaning-negative feelings about this whole fucked up situation, although maybe not for all the same reasons. He's confused about the obvious parts of course, the whole multidimensional kidnapping of it all, but as someone who doesn't really make a hobby of "thinking things through," by the time he's being handed his blanket and sleeping bag he's also more or less accepted the situation-- well, sort of. It isn't that he believes everything he's been told just like that, he isn't that dumb, but rather than make an idiot of himself he feels like a better idea would be to observe things for himself, talk to people, recon and shit. He's almost calm about it, even; Carl Gallagher is someone who spent the bulk of his life not giving a shit about what was or wasn't "possible" or "rational," he doesn't know a damn thing about metaphysics (or even that much about regular physics) or multiverse theory, and even right now he still doesn't really care.

The fact he's here at all pisses him off, of course, but the hows and whys he doesn't give a second thought, nor does he mind too much the fact they're being forced to camp out in a hotel due to flooding. He probably minds that least of all out of all his current options, in fact. It's just not that big a deal.

He grabs a few fistfuls of the snacks, shoving some into his pockets for later and then claiming a spot on the floor, sitting on his sleeping roll as he opens one of the packets and tosses a handful into his mouth.

Though he's rather short and baby-faced, Carl does have an intimidating edge to him -- forged through his many years of poverty, delinquency, and then later military school -- and he uses this to his advantage now, willing any Dominant he happens to make eye contact with to stay the fuck away from him as if they're all stuck in prison together and Carl is the inmate who can make a shiv out of anything he gets his hands on, so, you know, approach at your own risk. Not that he's actually trying to start any shit right now, but he can't show any weakness, not here. ]

[ He mutters to himself as he chews, unable to make any sense of the wrapper -- the name is something "witty" and suggestive but it goes over his head, the spelling too peculiar for him to make the connection -- so he crumples it up and tosses it, not deliberately intending to hit someone in the back of the head with it, but it flies and does just that. If they happen to look over at him he'll look away, pretending that was totally not him. ]

He doesn't understand the tech, only partially parses what's being told to him, so by the time he gets the tablet, he's.... actually kind of lost as to what the hell he's supposed to do with it. He takes it and, after a brief, cursory glance, tilts his head to his neighbor, offering the tablet over with one clawed hand. There's a faint, telltale sibilant sound to his words as he speaks, just shy of an actual hiss:]

I'm finished. It's ceased to display anything interesting.

[With the telltale flash of soft nude flesh barely obscured on the screen beneath his hand. Hey, he doesn't need this.]

that's really the only thought in his head as he sits in an uncomfortable chair feeling incredibly uncomfortable. the pamphlet he'd been given remains unread, expression as confused as he feels. arriving here hadn't been the most jarring shock of his life; in fact, some of it had been reminiscent of waking up after all those years on the ice, and he'd even taken a few minutes to run outside as if that would give him answers. what steve continued to get, unfortunately, was more questions. there had been a little specificity about the mark on his throat—an interesting adjustment considering his lack of tattoos or scars.

but that's not the point. the point is... is there one? steve looks up at the person instructing them on their next group activity, and while he would normally be encouraging such a thing, steve can't wrap his head around exactly what this place is and what it does. outside the obvious fact that everyone here isn't present of their own will. he frowns at the continued instruction and shakes his head. ]

From the second they let her outside, she thinks she's going to cry.

The sun, the actual sun. It's not a clear day, the flooding makes it bad for someone else. But for Angel? No. This is the best day that there has ever been. She doesn't care that it's covered in water. She doesn't care that she's been man handled by yet another set of technicians. All she cared about was staring up and the big open sky.

For hours. She does nothing. Nothing at all. Part of that is a simple fact that she cannot walk particularly. Years of eridium drugging her system, her father's experiments had left her one of the most terrifying sirens in existence, yet weak as a newborn bird.

But she doesn't care. She's outside. Sitting on a mostly dry surface, her gumboots off as she puts both her bare feet in the water.

Tangentially, she realises, she's crying. Little happy hiccups as she kicks her feet in the water. Watching it splash and feeling it on her skin. She cups it in between her hands, and throws it with another happy splash. A little while later, she stumbles and trips her way to a store and buys whatever food they have. One of everything, more than she can eat easily.

Does she look insane? Crying and laughing and playing? Yes, yes probably. But she didn't care. She was out of the control core and there was no Jack in sight. Ice cream drips off her fingers, even as at the same time she appears to reach for a slice of pizza, a drink of orange juice and soda. She barely knows what to do next.

Clothes, maybe. Probably important. What clothes? She didn't know. Just not yellow. She was going to start with not yellow. Sirens all picked a colour didn't they? Right. Well. Blue then. Blue and white. That would do. Of course, she had no idea how to dress. So she finds something the store attendant says wouldn't need her to know to do anything fancy with, and drags it over her head. It's immediately ruined by sticky chocolate fingers and the water that makes it stick to her skin. Oblivious and happy, she continues her stumbling, leaning on walls, slow way of going.

But here she is, falling over herself as she tries to move along the wall. It wasn't exactly dignified, to be stumbling this way, but exhaustion had set in faster than she thought it would. A feeling of overstimulation beginning to set into her.

Besides, she has other problems.

The aforementioned walking, swimming, trying to get back to her apparent assigned rooms. Which is remarkably slow going, because she cannot get a few steps before she stumbles, and has to lean against whatever is closest.

Or a person, as it turns out. "Oh F- fudge, sorry, sorry I didn't mean to - can you just... help me get back to the wall?" She's not a big person, barely reaching over 5'3, her thick black hair sticking up and falling over her face to obscure one side of it. A normal looking face. Just aside from the tattoos and the cybernetics on her chest and spine and skull.

She just couldn't walk. And the lift was out. "Hey uhm, are you a Submissive? I'll make you a deal. You help me get up there - and you can stay the night with me, or whatever. No sex. I... don't know how to have sex. But you can sleep on the couch. Or bed. Whatever you want? I could just... really, really use the help right now?"

To say the least.

Orientation

She actually prefers to this, then spending a lot of time outside at once. It's not that she's not excited, but she found out quickly: it overwhelmed her. Sitting with screens? That was a much easier way to process what was happening.

It just was going way too slowly for her. Forgetting that she had a computer buddy, her head tilts and there is a little murmur of executing phaseshift, and the faint light began to pulse through her blue markings, turning them white. A little orb appeared at the end of her left her - the tattooed one, and she reaches forward to touch it the screen.

Then all at once, the images on the screen started flashing at three times the speed, which seemed to be just fine, for Angel. Probably not for whoever she was sharing with, which she seemed to have completely forgotten they or anyone else was there.

[ Jackson has spent time in pretty crappy places before, so he's trying to look on the bright side. He's not afraid of getting his hands dirty, and at least this is better than being kicked out onto the street. But it's not exactly how he envisioned spending one of his first real solo adventures as a superhero -- because that's what this is, right, this is totally one of those inter-dimensional things that all the big names have done at some point or another. He thought there would be more spaceships, for one thing. And maybe a bit less sex. Not, like, a whole lot less. But this Fifty Shades fantasy is intense even for him.

Sleeping bag and blankets in his arms, he picks his way through the ballroom, looking for somewhere with enough room to spread out. He tries to be careful as he does it, but it's dark and sometimes he feels his foot come down on top of someone else's leg or knocking aside someone's water bottle. When that happens, he's quick to apologise. ]

Oh, shit! Sorry! Kind of cramped in here, huh?

TAKE THE STAIRS ;

[ He doesn't spend all of his time in the ballroom, though. He needs to explore, need to do reconnaissance, especially when they're all called to Orientation. That definitely sounds like something he needs to know about. He steps into the elevator, trying to appear cooler and more collected than he feels -- right up until the powers stops and the lights go out with a soft thud.

Once the explanation comes and the smooth jazz kicks in, he's cycled through about a dozen different emotions and landed on "concerned". But he has a reputation to protect -- he wants to make Arthur proud, even if Arthur isn't here.

He clears his throat and tries to look nonchalant, leaning back against one of the walls in the dark. ]

So.. first time?

[ The plastic clothes they gave him don't exactly leave anything to the imagination. Jackson isn't a prude, he's had his fair share of risky internet searches in the middle of the night, but this is.. different. As he makes his way down the street he tries not to make it too obvious, attempting to subtly cover himself with his hands, his skin damp and too hot and sticking miserably to the plastic. It's not like he can really hide anything, not even the bioluminescent glow of the thick scars that spiral up his arms, triggered by the rain that's finding its way through the edges of the coat.

This place is really strange. Really, really strange. He tries to pay attention to his surroundings as he heads in the rough direction of the building he'd been pointed at, trying to come up with some kind of plan instead of being distracted. Being outside is good, at least. As he walks, he finds himself feeling more relaxed about it, almost excited, almost thrilled, his heartbeat kicking up a gear.

He's humming under his breath before he realises it, flexing some of his powers to kick up bright sprays of floodwater around his feet and twist the droplets in the air. Somehow that's even better. He has a sudden urge to show off, to really show the city what he can do. Before he knows it, he's tipped his head back in the rain and he's -- singing? His voice is rusty as anything, not exactly carrying a tune, but he's doing it anyway. ]

Sooo-oomewhere over the rainbow, way up high -- and the dreams that you dream of, once in a lullaby, ooooh --

[ He can't stop himself, though inside he's mortified at what he's doing. Singing? And now he's dancing, leaping up to grab one of the lampposts, working it like he's on a pole or something, this is so weird, but he's -- he doesn't have a choice. His eyes are wide, shocked, as he throws out a hand, water twisting and spinning in the air, and launches into the second verse, even louder this time. ]

Sooooomewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly, and the dreams that you dream of -- dreams really do come true, oooooh-oooh --

[ He's a little shocked when, during Orientation, his screen flickers and changes into a private video feed. And it's not just any feed, it's someone -- well, having a private party of their own, maybe on their own or maybe someone else. Jackson watches for all of a few seconds, panicked thoughts of arousal (hey, he's still a young red blooded guy, okay) and second hand embarrassment chasing around his head. Then he switches it off with a yelp.

Later, he digs out the username that had been linked to the feed, and you might get a call from an unknown contact. When it connects, he looks like he really doesn't want to be doing this, but he can't help himself. Good guys don't.. peek at that stuff. ]

Hey, uh, sorry for interrupting you -- um, again. I just thought you should know that someone, like, hacked your feed or something. And I saw.. well, too much. So you might want to do something about your security system? Maybe update it?

still, he finally shifts when the elevator comes to a halt, wincing as the lights go out and the emergency lights replace them. he already doesn't particularly like enclosed places, and now there's this. glancing down at his gloved left fist, he flexes it, then glances critically to the doors, then to the roof of the elevator, before returning his gaze to the stranger. ]

[ All of this is so bizarre to Trevor that he'd think it were a dream, if he were imaginative enough to come up with a world like this. The roles, the technology, the unfamiliar and unsettling architecture, the storm and flooding... it's too much all at once for it to not be real, which is. Upsetting, to put it mildly. He needs to find a way back home. The only explanation he can think of is that he got stuck in the infinite corridor and wound up here. In a crowded ballroom with a bedroll and snack cart. Better conditions than he's had in the past, granted, but... upsetting for other reasons.

He unfurls his sleeping bag and sits upon it with a troubled expression, wondering at all the others here. They can't all have been coincidentally traversing the planes of existence, could they? ]

[ He calls out to the person closest to him, rather impolitely but... forgive him his mood. ]

[ Well... it's wet out there. Trevor figured he'd try to get the lay of the land anyway, but after a few hours of wandering and wading he's retreated back to the hotel they've been sheltering in, completely soaked. He's unfamiliar with elevators that aren't on a pulley system, but he can certainly press buttons, and is tired enough that the stairs back up to the ballroom sounds like a further chore he just isn't in the mood for. He feels wound tight, restless and hungry and itchy, and though he's no stranger to sleeping in the muck with wet clothes... ugh. He does wish he had a change of them here.

Someone else slips into the elevator with him and Trevor nods once in acknowledgement, then presses the button to send them up. It feels like they're halfway between floors when the lights flicker and go out, and the elevator shudders to a stop.

He sighs in frustration. ]

God shits in my dinner once again. Do you have a light, by any chance?

[ It may be that Cal has been through plenty of things more harrowing than this, but that doesn't mean that being unceremoniously stripped and examined like that is in any way a pleasant experience. To then have all his stuff taken and be left with nothing but see-through clothes? Doesn't matter that they promise to return his things, it still makes him very uneasy. And while he's never exactly been self-conscious about the way he looks, that doesn't mean he likes the idea of everyone seeing him naked.

So when he's given the blanket and sleeping bag, he immediately wraps the blanket around himself with a scowl in the direction of the native that gave them to him - even if his current state isn't really their fault - before he walks further into the room to find a spot to put his sleeping bag down.

Once he's decided on a spot, he looks at one of his temporary neighbours and offers a somewhat awkward smile. ]

B. Get Wet

[ The see-through waterproof clothes he was given at his arrival are at least useful for the fact that they're waterproof. It's not perfect, but it keeps the water out for a decent amount of time. He's also clearly going to need to make money fast, and he's never much liked sitting still.

And what better way to learn about this place than to meet a bunch of different people?

If you squint or pay attention, it might seem like this particular raft is going a little faster than most others you've seen. Maybe this guy is just stronger than he looks. Maybe you're trying to wade through the street or maybe you're hanging at the exit or in the window of a building wondering whether it's worth it to go outside, when this Jedi Knight in ... shining plastic and blue rough-looking clothes that look vaguely like a construction worker or mechanic might wear them, slows to a stop beside you. ]

[ It takes a few days for Cal to be convinced that the Empire isn't going to instantly swoop down on him as soon as he makes himself known in any way. What finally convinces him is the fact that there are no spaceports. For a city this big to not have a spaceport? There's a lot going on here that he doesn't know enough about.

And if the Empire were to find him, well ... He can deal with that problem then.

He's still in the temporary hotel ballroom lodgings, and that's where he is when he records this. The lack of privacy hardly matters. ]

[It had been a thrill to get in an elevator again, honestly. Charlotte remembered them from the last time she was here and the thrill of the box moving as if by magic had been too much to resist.

When the announcement is made, Charlotte shakes her head and leans back against the walls of the elevator. She grins over at her fellow rider through the dim red light.]

She's snapped at people that she's not a cab carrier... but the lure of a penthouse, whatever that is, and a bed, are enough to drive her into the streets. By the time she reaches the customer, her scowl has been replaced with her trade mark grin and as she hands the bag over, she makes sure to brush her hands over her raincoat too.]

Soggy Sleepover

Caduceus doesn't need a lot of incentive to go rescue a sub. He steps into the temporary accommodations, looking around at the people that have eeked out spaces for themselves in the otherwise bare ballroom. If his height did not make him conspicuous - just about seven feet tall - then surely the pink hair would. Or perhaps the tail, though it is somewhat obscured at the moment by his clothes, which he's happy to have back.

He wants to do something to help. What he can do feels--limited. The lessons of their orientation are not forgotten. There's not even hot water he can make tea with.

After standing there for too long, he retrieves the meal vouchers he was given, absently counting them. He doesn't need them.

Caduceus catches the eye of one of the people with a submissive mark mingling around and offers one of the vouchers.

"Here, it's probably better than uhm. That." As he says it, he looks somewhat dubiously at the carts that have been partially emptied by now. "I think you have to go out in the flood to get there but it's yours if you want it."

His head tips back to look at the ceiling as the elevator shudders and the lights go out. Before he can utter a spell to chase away the darkness, the lights come back on, a concerning red. "Hm."

A voice tells them to keep calm and Caduceus finds himself looking at the other person in there with him, gauging their concern or panic. There's nothing to worry about just yet, right? Just a delay.

The music makes him blink, then laugh. "Is that supposed to help...?" Maybe it will. It's not awful. But then he catches a weird scent, something filtering in that wasn't there before. He looks around for its source, almost missing the voice when it crackles over the intercom again. Something about an hour...

"Can you smell that?" he asks almost absently, like he's not quite expecting his fellow captive to actually notice it. He's kind of used to that. As the scent fills the space, Caduceus finds himself feeling warmer. He doesn't think it's anything concerning, but--

"Are you okay...?"

This is uh--new. Okay. Okay I think I've got this--

[a quick dart of his eyes, then a nod. yeah, this is good. hopefully it's working the way it's supposed to.]

[ Trevor eyes the cart skeptically for awhile before grabbing a bottle of water and turning away from it. He's gone hungry for longer than a night before, and doesn't trust the strange offerings. Others are eating them but he's wary. It's mostly the packaging that does it, honestly. But as he's heading back to his bedroll, someone speaks to him. It's a tall fellow -- very tall -- with unnaturally colored hair and strangely shaped ears. If he wasn't speaking so kindly Trevor would suspect him a threat, but. Instead he just blinks at the vouchers, then looks back up at the stranger. Tilts up his chin a bit, forgetting that it puts his mark on full display. ]

I'll be alright, thank you.

Sleeping bags are fine. He's done that sort of sleepover set-up before, though no usually with quite so many other people. At least everyone is dressed the same - harder to feel awkward about being naked when everyone is.

He overhears chatter about being contracted with a Dominant for better accommodations. He's not putting much stock in that idea. Oh, he likes people just fine and he's typically pretty optimistic, but this place doesn't seem to be rolling in a happy-shiny direction. Feel free to change his mind and prove him wrong though.

Peter likes being useful and helpful more than most other things. So he jumps at the chance to do something. Not to mention, it means he gets semi-normal clothes and doesn't have to wander around in weird plastic clothes anymore. Well, they're still plastic, just vaguely less transparent. They're still not particularly comfortable.

Food deliveries and people deliveries - he's fashioned a sort of boat-like thing from stuff he found and pushes it around like a Venetian gondola - as needed.

He's wishing he had the suit though, it's pretty awesome and mostly waterproof so he wouldn't be getting quite so wet. What is with all the water?

"Why is it--" Stephen offers as manner of greeting as he steps beside Peter in the foyer of the semi-dry hotel lobby "--that it's starting to feel like we're getting invited to the same parties lately and I'm not sure your name should be on the list at all."

The pointed look Stephen gives Peter is almost like he's blaming the kid for something, like he had a choice in the matter or something, though in actuality it's mostly that it doesn't seem right to look the other way and pretend he hasn't seen Spider-boy wandering around the hotel.

Working for Torchwood means that Norton Folgate is accustomed to peculiar, but this is an entirely different kind of strange than the black market alien technology he's used to. Another world. He's always been able to adapt quickly to his circumstances, however, so when one of the lab-coated technicians starts removing Norton's clothes, he just gives the person's hand a smack. "Excuse me, you should at least buy me a drink first." But then there are hands all over and Norton yelps in surprise as he's poked and prodded and, "Oh good Lord, you really are checking inside and out, aren't you."

And then it's over and he's given some fresh clothing. Or at least something that's shaped like clothing. He holds up the clear trousers.

"What's the point of this? I might as well be naked. No clobber at all would be more fashionable than whatever this is." And so no clothes it is. He carries the garments he was given in his arms and walks nude through the hallways right up until he has to go outside. At that point, it's either put on the rubbish-bag outfit or get soaking wet, and Norton's commitment to dapper fashion only goes so far.

As he waits for the public transport, at least he's not the only person dressed in this ridiculous thing.

Norton takes one look at the hotel ballroom and the sleeping bags strewn across the floor and decides that it looks more like an air raid shelter than a proper place to get a good night's sleep. Calling it rough accommodations would be an insult to the word rough, so he promptly decides to try to find a way to upgrade his sleeping arrangements. The clothing he arrived in has been processed and is waiting for him, so he dresses in his slim, grey tweed suit and blue silk tie, and finds the restroom so he can finger comb his hair into order in front of one of the small mirrors. Primping complete, he tries to appear a combination of pitiful yet intriguing as he approaches the first man he sees who looks well-dressed or wealthy.

"Hello, what's a nice omme like you doing in a place like this?"

The lights go out and the lift stops and Norton swears under his breath. The dim red emergency lighting is welcome after the moment of pitch darkness, but the music--if one can call it that--is another story. It's as if someone took Duke Ellington's band and beat them semi-unconscious with a cymbal and then forced them to perform. The intercom announcement informing them that there will be a hour of this prompts Norton to turn to his companion.
