« « « OUT OF CLUTTER FIND SIMPLICITY

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

You’re here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You’re a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your highrise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You’re a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you’ll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms. Either way it's raining! Still.

Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new arrivals.

» » » LIES TRAVEL IN COMPANY

The day after stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « A. WAIST. OF. LEEWAYS.

The rain continues to drizzle, but it’s finally slowing enough for the citizens of Duplicity to catch their breath. With the influx of new LIERS, people make quick work of fixing the damages from Tumenalia—a combination of preparation and wanting to welcome more participants to orientation.

Typically, travel between the Up and the Down is rather seamless with the use of the elevators, and with the end of the holiday comes a regular schedule for transportation between the two areas of Duplicity. Yet, mysterious powers are at play once again. Or so it seems. Stepping onto the elevators does not deliver its occupants to their desired location; instead, they are ushered into rooms designed to be escaped. There are a variety of themes, but the most popular seem to be Room A, Room B, and Room C. While they follow the usual guidelines for any escape room, there are a few “catches” that might not be noticeable at first. Each clue is only accessible to those of the corresponding designation. Submissives are responsible for unlocking the first and third of the three clues, and even if a Dominant figures out what it is and how to use it, they will not be any closer to escaping unless the Submissive plays a key role in interacting with these clues.

Things to note about these rooms: the third clue requires some sort of sexual engagement to be considered “clear” of it. After the allotted time of one (1) hour, if those inside haven’t managed to escape, the Submissives will be removed from the room and the Dominants will remain until they can successfully help the new Submissives escape the room. Each time, the clues will be reset and change; they will never be the same.

» » » THE KEY TO HEARTS

Meanwhile, in the Down, a local charity organization has sent out notices for a black-tie fundraiser to be held during the evening to raise awareness of homeless Submissive children. Invitations are sent via the devices, and there are even fliers posted all across the Up and the Down. If in attendance of the event, the waitstaff will be taking down the names of all uncontracted Submissives; no other explanation of what it’s for is mentioned throughout the evening. And while donations are completely voluntary, any contributions made helps to further the main endeavor of the cause. However, it seems most people are present to network and find someone that might fill a contract slot. So, eat, drink, and dance until it all winds down and everyone decides to go home. The only “catch”? Dominants draw the name of one Submissive to accompany them back to the Up, and those who are left will be paired up for the sake of no one leaving alone.

« « « MOD & OOC NOTES

Please read carefully.

Dominant and Submissive TDM assignments: All characters whose first name begins with the following ( A, C, E, G, I, K, M, O, Q, S, U, W, and Y ) are Dominants. All characters whose first name begins with the following ( B, D, F, H, J, L, N, P, R, T, V, X, and Z ) are Submissives. Players with characters that are a number use the first letter to spell that number. To use this TDM as a door pass please link this on your app and place whether it is dominant or submissive.

For the escape room prompt players can make up the clues they find. They may be extremely sexual or something simple like moving a painting off a wall.

Also, any locations throughout Duplicity are available for TDM prompts as well!

Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!!

[ Anders is frowning at the card in his hand when she interrupts his thoughts, butting in abruptly - but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's sort of a relief, actually; he'd been trying to decide how best to call out a complete stranger in a crowd, with only their name to go on. Needless to say, the options were few and mostly unfavorable.

After a moment's pause (mostly surprise), Anders takes the offered hand in a quick, polite shake. ]

You must really be tired of the festivities, if you're this eager to follow a stranger home.

[personal profile] lillehavfrue 2018-10-15 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh. It does look that way, doesn't it? There's a certain faltering to her smile that's quickly covered over by a rueful expression as she shakes his hand, hers small and soft in his, and she's quick to try to move past that.]

You have a good point. There's plenty of stories about what happens to girls who follow strange men home and they all tend to end the same way.

[That's kind of dark as far as jokes go, but she knows the Big Bad Wolf and this definitely isn't him, this isn't the Homelands where all those fables come from, all those warnings to stay on the right path, not trust a stranger.

It's like fairy tale 101, but oh well, she's already stepped one foot into the trap, might as well just jump right in.]

I just got here, so we can just call it a misplaced trust that this really is all just to help the children.

[ It's a dark joke, but true enough, even in his experience. He wouldn't be so willing to go home with some stranger on a whim, either, without ample good reason. A consideration he keeps in mind, even though this one at least seems perfectly harmless, on first approach.

Anders offers her a slightly self-deprecating smile, only belatedly realizing his vague disapproval probably looks rather pointed, at the moment. ]

Well, I suppose that makes two of us. Although I've been here a while too long to still be falling for it.

[ That's only mostly the truth - he had come in expecting there to be some sort of obvious catch, sooner or later. But attending in spite of his better sense leaves them both in the same boat together, anyway. ]

My name is Anders, if being somewhat less of a stranger helps at all.
lillehavfrue: (Rain washed out its glow)

[personal profile] lillehavfrue 2018-10-16 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
[She's about as harmless as you can get, honestly, with no supernatural powers to her name and no real desire to hurt anyone at all. If Anders had to get stuck with someone to take home she's probably one of the safest bets. Hopefully that goes both ways.]

It does help.

[And so does knowing that he's been here awhile, that these things are at least a little less out of the ordinary if not normal for him by now. Having an experienced partner is always helpful, and he seems kind and putting all her faith in the hope that he really means that he'd weighed the better interests of faceless children who may or may not exist, may just be a tool to get bleeding hearts like her to be complacent in what's essentially a human auction, but-

This isn't the worst thing she's done, putting her name in a pool and letting the person who picked her name take her home. At least this feels a little more dignified than dancing naked to catch the interest of someone who felt entitled to her time.]

How long have you been here?
mewnifestos: (pic#10476591)

[personal profile] mewnifestos 2018-10-16 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
A few weeks. Closer to a month, now, I suppose.

[ By his best estimate, anyway. He hasn't kept strict track, least of all when he first arrived. Acclimating to the city has been a uniquely difficult experience for him, though - it's so unlike any place he's ever been, even without all the rules and roles. (Actually, that part's not so unfamiliar.) ]

Not so long for you, though, I'm guessing?
lillehavfrue: (But I hear it loud)

[personal profile] lillehavfrue 2018-10-16 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's been close to a full day at this point. I didn't want to stick around in my apartment, so I decided to take a walk.

[It wasn't really that bad all things considered, but it had felt so solitary there in those rooms that she hadn't wanted to stay in them, not when she hadn't had a chance to see the rest of the city yet and when there wasn't anything like home to them.

Somehow, a party with strangers and the possibility of being taken home by one had seemed better than sitting by herself, alone.]

[personal profile] mewnifestos 2018-10-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Only a day? And you're already up to hobnobbing at fancy parties?

[ Or even just hovering on the edges of one, if that's more her speed - it all still sounds like far more effort than he would've been interested in putting toward anything other than finding a way out of this place, when he'd only just arrived.

Not that that isn't still very much on his mind. But Anders has had enough experience living under rigid, oppressive rule to know that railing violently against it without the slightest idea of what he's doing first would be patently futile. He doesn't have a death wish. (Anymore.)

Another wan smile crosses his face. ]

You're stronger than I am. Someone could have handed me a pamphlet for a benefit on behalf of sick kittens, my first night, and I think I'd have thrown it back in their face.
lillehavfrue: (And under the water you scream so loud)

[personal profile] lillehavfrue 2018-10-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Her smile fades again, flickering away as she glances away and rubs almost nervously at her arm, like she's trying to rub a little more warmth into herself. She hadn't really given much thought to letting herself adjust, preferring instead to just get to work with the knowledge that if she were complacent it would mean missing out on opportunity, maybe even letting herself fall into a kind of denial about being here that kept her from doing what she needed to to survive.

She's so far past that at this point, too used to just forcing herself to take the steps she needed to, that she hadn't even thought twice about coming here.]

I don't know if strong is the word for it, it's just- this isn't that different from what I'm used to from before I made it here.
mewnifestos: (pic#10476591)

[personal profile] mewnifestos 2018-10-17 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
The parties, or the casual endorsement of rampant oppression?

[ He asks as if that's a joke, but this time the smile doesn't quite reach his eyes. He's watching the dwindling crowd of party-goers again, wary of anyone still sober enough to overhear. ]

If it's the latter, we have something in common.
lillehavfrue: (Rain washed out its glow)

[personal profile] lillehavfrue 2018-10-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the party.

[That's as much a confirmation as anything else she could say, but she's well tuned to the sight of someone looking for an out, a way to say things they can't say easily or at all, and something like camaraderie makes her reach out to touch his arm.]

We could go now. I don't think we need anything else from this.
mewnifestos: (Default)

[personal profile] mewnifestos 2018-10-17 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ He looks a tad surprised by the gesture, but it passes in a brief flicker, and he offers her his arm. And a more convincing smile. ]

I think you're right.

[ The room is still crowded with tables and chairs and all manner of debris in need of sweeping away, but it's blessedly free of much of the evening's patrons, now, and it's easy to weave past the clutter.

Once they're out in the not-so-fresh air of the Down, it's a bit easier to breathe - and talk. ]

If you'd be ill at ease spending the night in a stranger's apartment, I don't mind making other arrangements for you. I see no reason we have to play along with this any further than keeping up the illusion requires. But, I... Must admit, I would enjoy the company.

[ He's known her all of a minute, but there's something in her quiet, self-effacing demeanor he feels an instant empathy toward. There's nothing unseemly in the implications of his invitation; it's only just that - an offer of company. ]
lillehavfrue: (Shell made out of gold)

[personal profile] lillehavfrue 2018-10-17 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[She was prepared from the minute she took the flier down and folded it carefully, tucked it into her purse, for whatever might happen tonight. She was prepared when she offered up her name, prepared to go home with whoever drew it back out, and she thinks before he even says what he does that she'd gotten lucky with Anders.

When he does speak, offers that so kindly, she can't help smiling softly in return.]

I'd like to go with you. [She says it directly, with no embarrassment or worry about how it might be taken.] It'd be nice to have a friend here, and besides, you feel less like a stranger already.
mewnifestos: (Default)

[personal profile] mewnifestos 2018-10-18 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
[ His own smile, still soft and somewhat reserved, widens in return. Making friends has never been his strong suit; it really is a rare occasion. ]

When I first arrived, there were a few friendly faces in the crowd. It made this all a little less... What it is. [ Out on the streets of the Down, that feels like a particularly pointed statement. But this side of the city is only the more honest face of it all. ] The least I can do is to try to pass the favor along.

...And all this unearned status isn't worth much, if I can't use it to help anyone, anyway.
