TDM #2

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy. This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses. To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues. You’re here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity. After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation. If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You’re a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your highrise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You’re a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you’ll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms. Either way it's raining! Still. Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new arrivals. |
![]() The day after stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park. The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning. |
![]() The rain continues to drizzle, but it’s finally slowing enough for the citizens of Duplicity to catch their breath. With the influx of new LIERS, people make quick work of fixing the damages from Tumenalia—a combination of preparation and wanting to welcome more participants to orientation. Typically, travel between the Up and the Down is rather seamless with the use of the elevators, and with the end of the holiday comes a regular schedule for transportation between the two areas of Duplicity. Yet, mysterious powers are at play once again. Or so it seems. Stepping onto the elevators does not deliver its occupants to their desired location; instead, they are ushered into rooms designed to be escaped. There are a variety of themes, but the most popular seem to be Room A, Room B, and Room C. While they follow the usual guidelines for any escape room, there are a few “catches” that might not be noticeable at first. Each clue is only accessible to those of the corresponding designation. Submissives are responsible for unlocking the first and third of the three clues, and even if a Dominant figures out what it is and how to use it, they will not be any closer to escaping unless the Submissive plays a key role in interacting with these clues. Things to note about these rooms: the third clue requires some sort of sexual engagement to be considered “clear” of it. After the allotted time of one (1) hour, if those inside haven’t managed to escape, the Submissives will be removed from the room and the Dominants will remain until they can successfully help the new Submissives escape the room. Each time, the clues will be reset and change; they will never be the same. |
![]() Meanwhile, in the Down, a local charity organization has sent out notices for a black-tie fundraiser to be held during the evening to raise awareness of homeless Submissive children. Invitations are sent via the devices, and there are even fliers posted all across the Up and the Down. If in attendance of the event, the waitstaff will be taking down the names of all uncontracted Submissives; no other explanation of what it’s for is mentioned throughout the evening. And while donations are completely voluntary, any contributions made helps to further the main endeavor of the cause. However, it seems most people are present to network and find someone that might fill a contract slot. So, eat, drink, and dance until it all winds down and everyone decides to go home. The only “catch”? Dominants draw the name of one Submissive to accompany them back to the Up, and those who are left will be paired up for the sake of no one leaving alone. |
Please read carefully. Dominant and Submissive TDM assignments: All characters whose first name begins with the following ( A, C, E, G, I, K, M, O, Q, S, U, W, and Y ) are Dominants. All characters whose first name begins with the following ( B, D, F, H, J, L, N, P, R, T, V, X, and Z ) are Submissives. Players with characters that are a number use the first letter to spell that number. To use this TDM as a door pass please link this on your app and place whether it is dominant or submissive. For the escape room prompt players can make up the clues they find. They may be extremely sexual or something simple like moving a painting off a wall. Also, any locations throughout Duplicity are available for TDM prompts as well! Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!! |

[That does, at least, draw a mildly amused tone from Jonathan as he follows. He probably shouldn't allow his skepticism to get the better of him, particularly given his own existence, but he's known humans to claim magical powers only to wind up being charlatans or troubled minds.]
And what form does your magic take?
no subject
He leads them to the elevator, allowing Jonathan to enter first, as he's the guest of sorts, and follows after him. He knows his way around well enough by now and plugs in the proper number for his apartment floor. ]
Well, anything, really. Conjuring, potions, enchantments, summoning. I was born with magic in me. It's a part of me. It's not as if I control an element or a specific slice of the world, if that's what you mean.
no subject
I'm really not very sure what I might mean. Are you some manner of fae folk, then? To be born with magic seems extraordinary to me. There's nothing like that in the world I hail from.
[This is absolutely true. If he's glossing over his own magic, well... Mostly he'd like a demonstration before mentioning anything for himself.]
no subject
No, no. I'm what's called a warlock.
[ He leans back against the wall of the elevator as his moves, looking perfectly as ease as he crosses his arms over his chest. There's some bravado there, some artfulness to the way he lounges that speaks of power. It's all gearing up to his reveal: ]
I'm half demon.
no subject
I'm honored you would share such a thing with me, Mr. Bane, but you have little cause to trust me. Are there... many like you here?
[Mostly because that's the only reason Jonathan can think of to be so candid. He really doesn't know how to react to the news apart from curiosity. He'd like to get a look at this man's blood. Less to drink and more to examine to sate his scientific hunger.]
no subject
It's not honesty; it's a test. And Jonathan reacts with the sort of cautious curiosity that Magnus can handle. Read: he hasn't run screaming. ]
Not as far as I know. I won't go shouting it from rooftops, but you asked about my magic and it's nothing I fancy hiding. As we both know, I have the upper hand here. It matters little what at least half the popular thinks of me.
[ And yet here he is gauging Jonathan's react. He cares. But only so much, to tell who he needs to make an enemy out of or not. ]
no subject
[There's a delicate disagreement and arrogance to that comment that Jonathan can't scrub away. The 'upper hand,' indeed. Once again, Jonathan regrets not having more blood at his fingertips. His shadow magic doesn't need it at the most basic level, but everything else... his blood claws would be like a housecat instead of a tiger at this point, and the vampire is painfully aware of it.]
It seems you've grown accustomed to your new role very well.
no subject
[ There's a touch of sarcasm there, but whether Jonathan chooses to hear it or not is up to him. The truth is, it's very easy for someone like Magnus to be seduced by the finer things in life, by power and prestige. But at his heart, he's not someone who enjoys stepping on others. He's learned his lessons from childhood, when causing pain in others was a matter of course. He doesn't want to be that man anymore. ]
I understand why you would not and I promise, I'm not about to throw my weight around here. We can pass the evening however you like. It's simply a requirement, of both of us, that we must get through.
no subject
It may be a very long evening, sir. I'm in the habit of keeping nocturnal hours thanks to my work in the night clinic. I hope you will not begrudge my leaving before the dawn breaks, if it is permitted by those minding us.
no subject
[ Magnus kept strange hours but only because of nights out and research, nothing as noble or mundane as clinics or work. That he left for others more competent and reliable than him. ]
We'll sneak you out somehow if I'm truly that dreadful of company.
no subject
Please believe it is not your company, dreadful or otherwise, that would chase me away. I'd simply like to maintain some level of regularity with my sleep. I shouldn't like to impose upon you for quarters if you find yourself similarly fatigued in the early morning hours.
[The elevators dings their arrival and Jonathan peers out curiously onto the floor. He hasn't actually been in any of the dwellings in the Up, just wondered after them from the outside.]
no subject
[ Magnus has his suspicions now, especially given how Jonathan insists upon his sleep schedule. He's known a few people who have such stringent requirements put upon themselves, and none of them have anything to do with preference.
He strolls over to his door and opens it with a wave of his hand, the lock clicking undone and the door whooshing open to permit them. Magnus immediately begins discarding portions of his wardrobe as he enters: a jacket over a wingback chair; a cravat on the floor; his waistcoat on a counter.
He waves his hand again to shut the door behind Jonathan. ]
You can drop the glamour now, darling. We're alone.
no subject
Jonathan steps over the cravat and follows, only removing his heavy trench coat and placing it over one arm to hold onto. He's about to remark on the fine decor when Magnus' comment catches him off-guard. The doctor looks to the other man, expression carefully neutral.]
I beg your pardon, Mr. Bane?
no subject
I've been staring into those beautiful eyes too long not to notice that something's wrong. Your hand was too cold, sir, and your sleep schedule?
no subject
Magnus also hasn't presented himself as wanting to actually attack Jonathan or present any particular threat. It could be a ruse, but Jonathan's experience with vampire hunters is that they tend not to bother with deception. McCullum and his men certainly hadn't. That is more the purview of vampires like those in the Ascalon Club. And Magnus is most definitely not a vampire.
Nearly half a minute ticks by before Jonathan inclines his head slightly. The glamour falls, stripping away the muted semblance of life from Jonathan's features. His scars are more prominent, and the mark left by his maker on his neck becomes visible just above his collar on the left side. Jonathan's eyes are the only things that remain particularly lively, though the blue is lighter than before. He watches Magnus closely.]
I really do run the night clinic at the hospital where I work. It agrees with my current constitution.
no subject
He all but falls, gracefully, back onto one of the large sofas that dominate the main room. There's two, facing each other, deep and rich reds in color with sumptuous cushions. Magnus inclines his head to invite Jonathan to join him. On either. ]
I have a friend who does the same. Because it's easier for her to hold her glamour at night when everyone's half asleep than during the day time, when there's so much demanded of her.
So, what is your current constitution? I don't want to guess and offend you.
no subject
['They,' not 'we.' Even having defeated the Red Queen's avatar as Myrddin's supposed champion--a kind word for a chess piece or puppet--Jonathan is only a month into his new condition. Identifying himself with their undead ranks does not come easily.]
Most would use the word vampire. Creatures of blood and darkness.
[He lays his coat over one of the arms of the sofa opposite Magnus, and sits down, posture remaining upright and prim.]
no subject
But I wasn't sure if you used the same word in your world. I know many vampires, some of them great friends of mine. If you're worried about any kind of judgment from me, Doctor, you won't find it. Just to let you know.
no subject
Thank you, Mr. Bane. I do not know what burden your condition carries in your own world, but I would likewise choose to judge you on your character, rather than your heritage. [And apart from that minor ruffling earlier, Jonathan is pleased enough with what he's seen. Of the options, Magnus is clearly not the worst to have found himself sent home with.] I'm curious to hear about these vampires you know. The Ekons I'm aware of are, by and large, self-aggrandizing, obsessed with tradition, and unpleasant. There are exceptions, of course.
no subject
[ He doesn't go into detail. He's sure they both understand each other there: to be ostracized from society, scorned by the judgmental and self-righteous, to hide one's true nature for fear of deadly reprisals. It has to be known. ]
You're describing roughly every older vampire I've met. [ He chuckles. ] But the newer breed, the younger vampires, they tend to be of a different quality. They haven't had time to become so jaded and cynical. Though I will say my favorite one has quite the sarcastic tongue.
no subject
Are there many of these young vampires? Such things are very closely watched in London. To sire another vampire is a great responsibility for most. [There's arch of his brow and mild irritation in his tone as he continues.] My maker was, I'm told, less attentive than most.
no subject
It's difficult to keep such things in your heart after so long. [ He can say this from experience. ] But no, there are not many young vampires. It's a complicated process, watched over by a group of... let's call them supernatural policemen who make sure that no one is taken advantage of. It doesn't always work, but there's a system in check.
[ His lips purse in mild disapproval. ] I'm sorry that that's the case. I hate when that happens. The change is too much for someone to handle on their own.
no subject
[Jonathan takes a breath. That's likely enough to be giving away about himself.] Now, these supernatural policemen in your world, are you subject to their 'rule,' as well?
