« « « OUT OF CLUTTER FIND SIMPLICITY

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

You’re here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You’re a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your highrise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You’re a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you’ll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms. Either way it's raining! Still.

Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new arrivals.

» » » LIES TRAVEL IN COMPANY

The day after stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « A. WAIST. OF. LEEWAYS.

The rain continues to drizzle, but it’s finally slowing enough for the citizens of Duplicity to catch their breath. With the influx of new LIERS, people make quick work of fixing the damages from Tumenalia—a combination of preparation and wanting to welcome more participants to orientation.

Typically, travel between the Up and the Down is rather seamless with the use of the elevators, and with the end of the holiday comes a regular schedule for transportation between the two areas of Duplicity. Yet, mysterious powers are at play once again. Or so it seems. Stepping onto the elevators does not deliver its occupants to their desired location; instead, they are ushered into rooms designed to be escaped. There are a variety of themes, but the most popular seem to be Room A, Room B, and Room C. While they follow the usual guidelines for any escape room, there are a few “catches” that might not be noticeable at first. Each clue is only accessible to those of the corresponding designation. Submissives are responsible for unlocking the first and third of the three clues, and even if a Dominant figures out what it is and how to use it, they will not be any closer to escaping unless the Submissive plays a key role in interacting with these clues.

Things to note about these rooms: the third clue requires some sort of sexual engagement to be considered “clear” of it. After the allotted time of one (1) hour, if those inside haven’t managed to escape, the Submissives will be removed from the room and the Dominants will remain until they can successfully help the new Submissives escape the room. Each time, the clues will be reset and change; they will never be the same.

» » » THE KEY TO HEARTS

Meanwhile, in the Down, a local charity organization has sent out notices for a black-tie fundraiser to be held during the evening to raise awareness of homeless Submissive children. Invitations are sent via the devices, and there are even fliers posted all across the Up and the Down. If in attendance of the event, the waitstaff will be taking down the names of all uncontracted Submissives; no other explanation of what it’s for is mentioned throughout the evening. And while donations are completely voluntary, any contributions made helps to further the main endeavor of the cause. However, it seems most people are present to network and find someone that might fill a contract slot. So, eat, drink, and dance until it all winds down and everyone decides to go home. The only “catch”? Dominants draw the name of one Submissive to accompany them back to the Up, and those who are left will be paired up for the sake of no one leaving alone.

« « « MOD & OOC NOTES

Please read carefully.

Dominant and Submissive TDM assignments: All characters whose first name begins with the following ( A, C, E, G, I, K, M, O, Q, S, U, W, and Y ) are Dominants. All characters whose first name begins with the following ( B, D, F, H, J, L, N, P, R, T, V, X, and Z ) are Submissives. Players with characters that are a number use the first letter to spell that number. To use this TDM as a door pass please link this on your app and place whether it is dominant or submissive.

For the escape room prompt players can make up the clues they find. They may be extremely sexual or something simple like moving a painting off a wall.

Also, any locations throughout Duplicity are available for TDM prompts as well!

Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!!

LIES TRAVEL IN COMPANY

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
[ Humans are rarely as tall at this woman is, and in this new human body the Nian is a good deal smaller than he used to be too. Still, the sights of the city are more interesting than the tall woman for most of the tour, and it isn't until he's starting to stand up in his seat when she voices her outrage that she gets his full attention.

There's some hesitation, because he's still struggling with understanding implications in questions, and this one doesn't sound like she's asking because she's confused about what's going on, but the only answer he can think to give is the surface level one, so--

The Down?

[ She turns her head very slowly, very deliberately towards the young man who so helpfully answers her question. ]

No shit.

[ She's obviously not very grateful for the information. ]

They expect us to live in this place? While all of them get, what, the skyscrapers?
cowared: (i'm afraid you're never satisfied)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-16 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ Aha! So it was one of those questions that meant more than it sounded! He's learning! He'd almost look proud of this face if it weren't for the fact that she's so clearly agitated about this situation that looking happy would probably be a faux pas.

(Another thing he learned. He's doing so well here. A pat on the back to himself.)

He looks out the window, not particularly bothered by the sights he's seeing. Other aspects about this Dominant/Submissive thing agitate him, but the housing isn't one. Probably because his living situation prior to this was pretty modest.
]

You're taller than most people, can't you just got take a skyscraper if you want?

[ This very stupid question is asked in earnest. Big=strong, right? ]
bye_felicia: (v18)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-16 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
[ It is a very stupid question, but one asked so earnestly that Victra has to stop and look the young man over with narrowed eyes. She has no idea how to communicate with those who are beneath her, in intelligence and station. Partially because she is so smart and partially because she never crosses paths with them. Before recently.

If he's joking, he's a very, very good liar. And Victra hates liars.

Hope it's just stupid then. ]

I might have tried, if I had proper weapons.

[ Also spoken in earnest, as a matter of fact. ]
cowared: (and i'm afraid i won't get out alive)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-16 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's a horrible liar, but an excellent idiot. The world (any world) rarely works in the simple and straight-forward way he thinks it should, and while the suggestion is based on the assumption that a physically strong person can just go take what they want, the reality is a bit different.

He misses the good old days when you could storm into a village and wreck things as you pleased while people uselessly bounced blades off of your tough hide.

Her comment makes a lot of sense to him, and he nods in agreement, then stops when he suddenly realizes something.
]

Would they even sell weapons to us?
bye_felicia: (v42)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-16 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The assumption that a physically strong -- and intelligent, cunning -- person can just go take what they want it's a stretch for Victra. That's the premise of her life back home. Of the Society. The strong rule the weak and are worthy of that position because they are strong. Because they have already dominated and can dominate any time there's need.

But things had begun to change, for Victra and the Society.

She scoffs at his question, not directly at him, though it's hard to differentiate. ]

Not if they're smart. No one should trust me with anything deadly.
cowared: (i'm afraid you're never satisfied)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-16 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Ruling and everything is a very human concept that the Nian has never had a whole lot of interest in, and that's going to make his stay here difficult in ways he won't see coming. For him strength was literally about going and taking what he wanted regardless of others, and leaving when he had what he wanted.

He lived a pretty lawless and selfish life in the early part of his existence.

The scoff does make him frown, though he looks more confused than upset.
]

Why? Do you enjoy using them on living things?
bye_felicia: (v01)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-18 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Victra lifts a brow at the question and seems to consider the young man for the first time, fully taking him in. There's something about him that reeks of innocence and yet... not.

She likes to think herself a good judge of character. But what's more, she's honest. She won't shy away from the question. ]

Enjoy is a strong word. But there are times when things need to be done. I've been in war where my blood sings and in battles where I feel sick. But for my freedom? I would do practically anything.
cowared: (what are you waiting for?)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-19 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's still and contemplative as she gives her reply, taking in what she's saying carefully. It would have been fine with him if she enjoyed it. The Nian himself never cared about torturing or hurting others, but in a way that it didn't matter to him if it happened or it didn't. When he was younger and was hungry all that mattered was filling his stomach.

Things are more complicated when you're given a few thousand years to grow up, but largely that's the consequence of getting involved with humans on a deeper level than before. Humans are so needlessly complicated.

He hums thoughtfully to himself after she finishes her explanation. He's never been involved in a battle before, so he can't relate to the feeling, but he does understand the distaste for being shackled. The extent of what they're going to deal with here hasn't really sunk in for him yet, but he still understands the expectations their particular roles carry.
]

Then even if no one will sell you one, you should still get a weapon for yourself.
bye_felicia: (v16)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-20 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That's not the response she expects from him. But, perhaps she shouldn't be surprised. Appearances determine a great deal in her world, practically everything on some levels. And he doesn't appear to be anything other than a lost young man, in the same boat as she is. But he asks perceptive questions. There's something to be said for that, she supposes. ]

What about you? You're going to allow yourself to progress unarmed?
cowared: (steam in the subway)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-21 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ A smile stretches across his face, and while it's mostly friendly looking there's still something just slightly off about it. ]

I don't know how to fight with a weapon.
bye_felicia: (v47)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-22 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Victra isn't unnerved; it takes more than a creepy smile and an implication to unnerve her. But she does, now, have her suspicions.

It annoys her. She doesn't like when people are anything other than what they look like. Her world is simple like that, or once was. ]

It's not a bad idea to learn, even if you have other tricks up your sleeve.
cowared: (stalked in the forest)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-23 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ Not being unnerved is fine, because the Nian can't really see the two of them coming to blows any time in the immediate future anyway. It's not like their goals are at odds here.

He looks upwards, considering the suggestion for roughly five seconds, before frowning.
]

It's easier for me to do things my own way.
bye_felicia: (v16)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-23 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ Victra cannot argue with that and, surprisingly, she feels no desire to. There's a shift in this conversation. Rather than dismissing him as a child, Victra's curious. And her curious is a sharp but subtle thing. ]

Easier but... if that option's been denied you? Always have a backup plan.
cowared: (steam in the subway)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-23 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had one before, and I've always been fine.

[ That isn't necessarily true. He's been chased into the ocean where he stayed in hiding for a couple millenniums. He's also been on death's doorstep after a fight and subsequent flight left him worn beyond anything he'd felt in his long existence. Neither time did he have any sort of backup plan in case brute strength didn't allow him to bulldoze his way through his problems.

He should rethink his definition of fine.
]
bye_felicia: (v47)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Once again, her sharp, curious look passes over him. It's not uncommon for young men his age, in their teens or barely out of them, to have seen much of the darkness of humanity. That's what the Institute is for: to harden the applicants into Peerless Scarred, true Iron Golds. But it's still a hell of an arrogant statement. Even for Victra. ]

How old are you?
cowared: (high blood drumming on your skin)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-24 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ah... this question is a problem. The Nian has never been particularly good at telling the ages of humans, and isn't entirely sure how old he looks.

For a brief moment the Nian things about just removing the last couple of digits from his age, but then remembers the pair of humans that is often mistaken for his parents are in their 40s. Considering the rate at which people age and usually couple it makes him doubt that his current form looks that old. The boy who is mistake for his little brother when they're out in public is about ten. He looks older than ten, but younger than forty...

He takes a stab in the dark, and splits the difference.
]

Twenty-five?

[ Overshot it.

He also sounds extremely uncertain giving that answer, and considering he stood there staring off into middle distance for several long seconds before giving it? It's not a very believable lie.
]
bye_felicia: (v50)

[personal profile] bye_felicia 2018-10-24 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She scowls at him. The answer is unsatisfactory and, most importantly, she knows that it's a lie. There's little in the world that Victra values nearly so much as truth. Perhaps it's a lot to ask of a stranger, especially one deposited into this world without friend or accomplice. But Victra wouldn't lie, so why should he? ]

I hate liars.
cowared: (dark in the city)

[personal profile] cowared 2018-10-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh... was it that obvious.

He hums to himself, and crosses his arms as he looks at the ground between their feet.
]

One moment.

[ He could try to lie again, but apparently the first one wasn't very believable, and she gave him no indication if he should try to guess up or down with the age he gave. If he tries again and gives a more unbelievable answer it's probably going to be inconvenient for him if she gets genuinely angry.

He won't give her the full answer though. That's his secret, and no one gets it unless he wants them to have it, but he can give her a truth that doesn't reveal much about himself.

After awhile he finally looks up, and with a lot more certainty tries a second time.
]

I don't actually know how old I am.

[ He was sleeping for so long that it was impossible to measure his exact years. He knows he's very old, and has a rough estimate of how long he's existed, but he doesn't have a solid number to give. ]

How old do I look?
