It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy. This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses. To counteract the discovery of the deceit gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the LIEs program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the deceit gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from LIEs after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues. ... and you're here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity. After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of Orientation. If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You're a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high-rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You're a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you'll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms. Enjoy your free time until Orientation! Participation is mandatory for all new and past arrivals. Skies are clear and the weather is warm. |
 After stepping through the door and participating in Orientation, LIERs are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERs at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park. The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning. |
 (cw: dubcon, altered mental states, infidelity, cruelty) Some charming surprises for LIERs new and old alike are being distributed at Orientation, hawked by various merchants, and handed out by early revelers in the streets. These nearly ubiquitous and fashionably-colored butterfly, bull, or swan charms can be found on a wide array of products from braided bracelets, to pendants, rings, keychains, pins, barrettes, etc. They're extremely attractive to whoever possesses one, to the point they don't want to remove it. If they make a concerted effort to take it off, they may find themselves wearing it again a few hours later without remembering putting it back on. The only way to truly be rid of it is to swap it out for a different charm. Butterflies feel more devil-may-care. They're up for trying just about anything once and have the stamina for it easily. However, they also bore quickly and might even quit an act right in the middle if it, or the person they're with, isn't doing it for them. They have a fairly callous attitude toward their partners' needs and desires unless they happen to align in the moment. They care nothing for commitment or long-term stability. Life is about enjoying every second as it comes. It's too short to waste on repetition. Bulls know what they want and exactly how they want it. They're confident and assertive in their propositions and prefer to stick to tried and true kinks they already know they enjoy. If they've never dipped their toes into the world of kink before, they will seek out someone knowledgeable to give them thorough instruction so that, when the time comes to try it on their own, they have the needed skills. They are enthusiastic about their own interests and very motivated to share them with others. The great thing about bulls is they won't quit until they get the job done and everyone is satisfied — unless denial is your thing. No judgment here. Swans are in love with romance and stability. They are less focused on falling in love with someone specific than they are on becoming the kind of person worthy of love and partnership. They're in it for the deep feelings with the goal of building a long-lasting love connection. They are prone to all the grand gestures, wooing in style, and digging into self-help if they have less desirable traits that would make them a bad partner. Even if a character would normally be allergic to this attitude, possession of a swan charm turns their eye toward the goal of being a good mate for life. Anyone who comes together with someone else in possession of the same charms will find themselves drawn to that person with the traits of the charm amplified. Butterflies will be even more flighty and prone to boredom, Bulls more set in their ways, etc. Should any unlucky trio decide on a 3-way with one holder of each charm, they're in for a bad time of it with the traits of each clashing and a high likelihood of hurt feelings and bad sex. After first obtaining a charm and wearing it, characters will be affected for one week with the effects waning as time passes until it's just a pretty bauble. No one can be under the effect of two or more charms at once, but they can switch charms out throughout the week. |

Green, red, and blue banners are hung from the buildings and street lights. Food and drink is abundant at tables and stalls, some of it simply tasty treats, some with the powerful aphro effects those familiar with Duplicity have come to expect from such offerings. Buyer beware. Or not. Businesses that capitalize on the sexual and violent nature of the festival have their best wares on display — toys, fetish wear, erotic furniture, even weapons, all either on sale at discount before businesses close for the festival or offered up for LIERs to demo in exchange for coupons to use later. One shop in particular has a few unusual items geared toward the festival, both for offense and defense it would seem. Toxine is a two piece lipstick set in a vibrant shade of red that comes with a clear basecoat. If worn without the basecoat, it affects both the wearer and anyone they kiss, producing wild desire to devour one another in any way possible. Effects can range from sexy to violent, even cannibalistic, depending upon the wearer and target. If worn with the basecoat, only the target is affected and their consuming desires will be unleashed on anyone in the vicinity. Knives for Feet No, your feet aren't knives. That would be silly! There are spring-loaded blades in the toes of these lovely fetish shoes geared toward men, women, and those who identify outside the binary. Some styles are studded with spikes as well, or have an extra-sharp stiletto heel. You'll look killer for any party. If someone gives you a hard time, knock them dead, baby. Slay. Orgasme is the perfectly discreet gentle self-defense perfume bottle that packs a big punch. Characters with a neutral feeling about their own bodies may simply have a nice leather harness to wear. Those who have grown or shrunk will feel an irresistible urge to flash someone whose opinion matters to them, whether this person is someone they care about or loathe. Those who don't know anyone in the city will want to flash the first attractive stranger they see. Only after exposing themselves can a character remove the harness and return to normal. If they can't find anyone to flash at all, the harness will eventually loosen and become removable within 2 days. Other businesses that don't cater to the depravity may be preparing fortifications against the impending Tumenalia mayhem, some even boarding up and closing down early. The owners want nothing to do with the property damage that often goes along with the releasing of inhibitions. It isn't long before suggestive and downright filthy graffiti is sprayed on the boards of these businesses. Some people have no sense of civic pride. ((Please note Tumenalia takes place in November. You're still welcome to play with the pre-festival prompts in December, or you can assume that post-festival the decorations are being taken down, businesses reopened, last remaining stock is on clearance, etc.)) |
 While the hierarchy of Dominants and Submissives remains generally stable throughout Duplicity, the society is not entirely without subversive undercurrents. Even after the quelling of recent dissent, there are whispers of defiance among those who long for a life outside the confines of their designation. Welcome to Autonomy, a "traveling" nightclub that moves around the Up, never held in the same place twice. People wanting to attend only learn of its current location and password hours before it opens for business. Tonight, the phrase No Labels will get you inside and into the temporary freedom that club Autonomy has to offer. In this circle, there are no assigned designations and no consequences for taking a role that isn't the one given by society. So, a Dominant may become the Submissive they've always wanted to be — or vice versa. Dominants and Submissives alike are able to mingle without repercussion and be themselves. Food, drinks, and private areas for more intimate encounters are provided. Donations are accepted at any point during the night to further Autonomy's attempts of spreading the fulfillment that comes from being untitled. On the night in question, Autonomy is holding a random lottery for temporary connections. When entering, patrons have the choice of submitting their names into this drawing to be paired with someone else in the club regardless of designation. A short while later, an anonymous message will pop up on both parties' devices with the name and description of their partner, and whether or not they choose to meet them is purely at their discretion. Having more than one connection isn't completely unusual either. |
Please read carefully. On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but the assignments are OOCly randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right." When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass." This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice. To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide: If your character is a lover, they are a Dominant. If your character is more of a fighter, they are a Submissive. To Note: Characters can only swap their designation for one of the following reasons: an event occurs that allows it or there are OOC reasons that make it a necessity. Any swap always requires mod approval and each character can only ever switch once. Characters that are being reapped will keep their previous designation but players can choose to use new TDMs with different designations for fun! Test Drive threads can be used as activity proofs for characters currently in-game. Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!! |

Maybe, like, sometimes? I think the last time I was here for Tumenalia it was common for things to sort of...just take hold and not let go, but it always goes away on it's own eventually. The real problem is that usually nobody tells you what kind of function is performed by the things for sale.

A few days or maybe a week? Totally depends...sometimes it's just, like, meeting some sort of condition, but like I said there's really no way of knowing what those are most of the time.
[Poor Riddle's fucked. Unless he fucks, that is, probably. But she feels like she shouldn't talk about naughty things around him, no matter how explicit the community is. Soon enough, the kettle is whistling and Ginger comes out with a tray sporting two kitschy mugs, a little sugar bowl, and a small plate of vanilla cookies. Fortunately there's, like, a lot of places you can get things without having to worry. All the businesses here run by LIERs are totally all about consent!

[That's definitely the most common way to stop feeling unlike yourself, as far as she's found. Sometimes maybe more specific than that, but...it's a safe bet, Duplicity being what it is. The way she says it so matter-of-factly, either she's been here for awhile or just doesn't have that kind of filter.
