It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the deceit gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the LIEs program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the deceit gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from LIEs after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

... and you're here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of Orientation.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You're a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high-rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You're a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you'll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms.

Enjoy your free time until Orientation! Participation is mandatory for all new and past arrivals.

It's the hottest part of the summer. Prepare to sweat.

» » » ALL ABOARD

After stepping through the door and participating in Orientation, LIERs are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERs at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

It's summertime! To beat the heat, LIEs has decided to throw a pool party directly following Orientation at one of the city's public pools! Attendance is mandatory for new arrivals and strongly encouraged for everyone else. New arrivals are provided with (skimpy) swimsuits to wear, but LIERs who have been in the city a while have the option of bringing their own gear. Of course, skinny dipping is allowed as well, and there are many spots on deck for people to tan themselves.

Speaking of tanning, why not help out a fellow LIER by rubbing some lotion on them? Or, if you want to avoid a burn, get someone to put sunscreen on your back? The formulas of the complementary products that LIEs provide may or may not have a mild aphrodisiac added to them, but at least you won't burn and you may get that nice golden tan you've been chasing — all over!

While one end of the pool is reserved for people to splash around in or float casually, there are numerous games and water activities for people to join in on as well:

In a sexy twist on Marco Polo, though in Duplicity the call and response is "lucky" and "get me," the seeker must try and tag other players by tugging at their swimsuits. They'll be rewarded with 30 seconds of foreplay, groping and whatever else they can accomplish within the time frame.

Dominant and Submissive pairs face off against one another in piggyback chicken fights or jousts using inflatable toys and suggestively shaped pool noodles.

Are those dildos stuck to the bottom of the pool? You bet! Dive down and retrieve them before handing them to the next person behind you to toss in and dive for or just collect as many as you can. There is, of course, the option of using said dildo on yourself or someone else for others to watch and enjoy on the pool deck. No judgment here.

For those who prefer a slightly more private option, there are curtained cabanas available and it's easy enough to duck inside with a partner for a quick tryst.

Whether it's the obnoxious, telltale jingle that signals the arrival of ice cream trucks, or the vehicles happen to be spotted in their various parking spots all around Duplicity — including some smaller carts made to navigate the narrower streets of the Down, it's obvious that they're popular considering the warm summer weather. It seems the locals can't get enough of the cool, sweet treats on offer — and, even better, the trucks are offering free samples in addition to selling regular sizes. Popsicles and soft serve ice cream are on the menu, and each frozen bite has its own unique set of effects.

Rainbow popsicle - feel the urge to engage in a random kink

Cherry or strawberry popsicle - tell someone about a sexual desire

Grape popsicle - blurt out something embarrassing (but not necessarily sexual)

A new public park has recently been built on a formerly empty lot in the Up. The bigger sign on the gate reads "Dog Park," and the smaller sign adjacent to it includes the posted rules that all people need to abide by in order to enter. If you're curious about what such a structure entails (after all, there are dogs in Duplicity), you're in luck: today, there's a meet-and-greet being hosted for pets and their owners, sponsored by a local "pet" shop, with banners advertising the event posted at each end of the park.

This is a Dog Park, alright, but it's intended for a very specific kind of play involving the LIERs who want to wear the collars in question as well as the LIERs who are interested in holding their leashes. Even if you've never harbored an interest in it before, don't worry — random bystanders will be enthusiastically pressured to join in by event volunteers, so you might find yourself wearing a collar or holding a leash in very short order regardless. All pets must be collared and leashed properly in order to enter the Dog Park, and owners must remain in close proximity to their pets at all times. There are toys for tugging and fetching, a few pieces of special playground equipment, and more than enough space to run around. There will also be obedience challenges issued to various pairs at random, just to see how in sync both pet and owner are with one another.

If you decide to participate and remain on your best behavior, you might even earn a nice treat in addition to a pat on the head. The pet shop will be handing out goodie bags consisting of take-home collars, as well as animal tail plugs and other sex toys and gear, to everyone who takes part in the event, willingly or not.

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but the assignments are OOCly randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right." When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass." This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide:

If your character is a night owl, they are a Dominant. If your character prefers the daytime, they are a Submissive.

To Note: Characters can only swap their designation for one of the following reasons: an event occurs that allows it or there are OOC reasons that make it a necessity. Any swap always requires mod approval and each character can only ever switch once. Characters that are being reapped will keep their previous designation but players can choose to tag on new TDMs with different designations for fun!

Test Drive threads can be used as activity proofs for characters currently in-game.

When Tim boards the train heading home from his lunch with Kyle at Haven he balks in the doorway which he happens to see sulking on the seats to his left. That's Damian sitting there in a paper gown; slightly older than Tim remembers him which he doesn't know if he's thankful for or not.

Bruce is going to hate this, Tim already hates this.

A local Dominant has to shove him further into the train car to shake him out of it before he can decide what to do. He pulls the light cardigan off his shoulders and moves to sit next to his adopted brother, dropping the garment in his lap.

"Hello," do not call him demon brat, "Damian."

Damian will not admit it, even under torture. But he can't help the wave of relief that goes through him at a familiar person. He's not pleased Timothy has been stranded here too, but being alone in it is ... lonely.

"Drake," he says, attempting to make the gown less flimsy looking. He fails. "You're dressed. You've been here more than today?"

"I've been here over six months. So has Bruce." Let's rip off that little reveal like a bandaid. He suppose he could be gentler about it but he feels like Damian would appreciate the lack of small talk in this situation.

"Your clothes will be back at your new apartment. Likely in the same building as your father and Clark." Yeah okay, maybe he should slow down a little bit with the information bombs.

"In addition to anything you might have had on you when they took you."

Damian straightens, expression unusually obvious and definitely conflicted - relief alongside genuine horror at the idea of being in a place like this while his FATHER is also here. "You seem ... young," he says instead of responding to the notion of his father being here.

Hearing that his father AND Superman are here though makes Damian scowl in dismay. "Clark and Father are here, and have not found a way out?" His father was a genius and Clark was Superman. How had they NOT found a way? Drake was also remarkably intelligent (in some matters). Why were they still HERE?

Perhaps it wasn't them. This clearly wasn't the same Tim he'd left behind, so perhaps it was an alternate, incompetent version of them.

So he'd have his suit and weapons. That was something, he supposes.

Tim catches Damian's eye at that and there's a clear message of 'I know, I hate it too written in that couple of seconds of eye contact before he looks around the train again.

"You seem older. You're about... twelve when I last saw you." Damian definitely doesn't look twelve now, Tim would guess they actually look about the same age because of everyone's tendency to guess young for himself and Damian's serious demeanour aging him.

"They have not but there are literally Kings of Hell, Gods and masters of magic and none appear to have gotten close. They have the ability to shut down people's abilities and no shortage of men to throw at us."

He should probably mention that Bruce is also younger and does not have the experience that Damian might remember. Not that he believes that would help them any here.

Damian feels the moment of connection. This place is clearly cursed when him and Drake have the same feelings on a matter.

"I'm sixteen," Damian says. As if that were worlds older.

He makes a dismissive sound. "We have dealt with gods, they're not always that impressive," Damian says. He may be overstating, but Drake is likely not unfamiliar with that. "We'll have to assist them then."

"Seventeen," nearly eighteen but he doesn't bother to point that out. The city hasn't gone lower than sixteen so far, and that's almost a relief if it wasn't also sickening.

"Yes but when you take all of that with a common goal and don't get any positive results. It's telling." He will nod though, he's not going to tell Damian that it's hopeless when he refuses to give up on finding a way home himself.

"Bruce is also... he's younger here. He hasn't met or adopted Cass yet," which means that he definitely doesn't know that Damian exists. Or at least he didn't until Tim had revealed it to him.

Damian's lips purse. It's strange to think of Timothy as the same age as him. Less mature he's accustomed to, but he's still usually older.

He takes that in, frown deepening. "That would explain his incompetence. If he's a less practiced version of himself, and you're not as developed either, then you both may require help." Superman was not an idiot - time with Jon had proved that - but he isn't on the same level of investigation as his father, or Drake. He pauses, and then adds, somewhat more subdued sounding. "So he doesn't know about me, either."

And there is the little demon brat Tim has been expecting. Tim's neutral expression doesn't change but there's a pause as there's an overwhelming urge to snap at Damian about who exactly is lacking right now.

But he can't. Because in this situation he is a Submissive and Damian is a Dominant and it only draws attention to the high ground that Damian likely hasn't realised he holds there. He waits a moment until he can keep that strain of anger out of his voice.

"He knows because I've told him but he has no living memory of you. He knows of your circumstances and he has one photo of you that I've given him." So he will recognise you if you decide to approach him before he can come to you.

Time, age, and positive relationships have softened Damian. But he's never not going to be DAMIAN. Abrasive, arrogant, and dismissive is part of the package.

He understands the general gist of what Dominant and Submissive means here. But it doesn't occur to him to use it in any way with Tim. They might clash (frequently), but Tim is family to him now.

He wonders why Tim HAD a picture of him on his arrival, but doesn't bother to ask. He's still frowning unhappily, but he adds stiffly. "Thank you for saving me the trouble of informing him again."

Damian may have had time for his demeanour to soften and even for him to think of Tim as family but Tim's more recent memory of Damian was not as favourable. That becomes a little more apparent when the words 'thank you' falling from Damian's mouth end with him being stared at as Tim mouths 'thank you?' in bewilderment.

He shakes the surprise off only a second later although the theory that this is a pod person or an alternative version of Damian will remain.

"I initially thought to shield him from any future knowledge considering what it might do when he returns home but he wasn't on board with that plan. If I was to tell him anything I thought at least letting him know about the family he has to look forward to would be best." It hadn't all been information that he'd wanted to hear but he doubts Damian was seen badly because of how Talia went about things.

Damian stiffens again at the baffled expression on Tim's face. "I could have done it, of course," he adds defensively.

He rolls his eyes. "-tt- Leaving him without a complete accounting of the information would make him insane, most likely. And prevent progress. He can always find a method of repressing it once home if the knowledge is a danger." It isn't as if similar things haven't been done.

'Looking forward to' is, in Damian's experience, not really the proper descriptor. He's a different person now than he was the first time he arrived in Bruce's life, but he's still himself enough that it's likely not an easy acceptance. "You've been safe here"

Tim turns his head just so he can roll his eyes out of Damian's sight at that assistance.

"You underestimate Bruce's sanity. He would have been fine. I was simply trying to avoid burdening him with extra knowledge that wouldn't have helped him escape this place," In the end that's really all he has done.

He's not telling Damian that.

"Depends on your definition of safe. They encourage you to integrate into the city and the way things work here. We all get jobs and contracts and live day to day. It's a lot like Gotham in regards to safety." In that, you watch your back constantly but there's nothing that either of them should have trouble with.

At least until the sex stuff comes up.

"He doesn't LIKE not having the whole picture to work from," Damian corrects with a roll of his eyes that he doesn't bother to hide. "And knowledge that seems like it might not help may still be pertinent in the end."

He frowns. "So the opposite of safe, then," he says dryly. They all navigate Gotham without issue (mostly), but no one would characterize it as 'safe', despite their efforts to make it so. (That also chafes at Damian, who likes things with a clear win/fail state. Eternal wars with minute gains and losses are difficult for him.) "You've gone along with their contract requirements?"

"Bruce doesn't like a lot of things about this situation, unfortunately, he has to live with a lot of them." Don't tell him what Bruce does and does not like Damian. He will not be lectured on how to best handle Bruce's wants and needs by a brat that-

Tim cuts off the thoughts because he needs to not rise to Damian's jabs, whether they be purposeful or not.

He will nod at the next question, "You would have heard it at Orientation, you'll end up in the People Zoo or Realignment if you don't. They're not above dragging other involved parties in to participate in any punishment they decide on."

He'd learnt that lesson the hard way recently and he was not looking forward to repeating it. He knew he would but it wasn't like facing an enemy in a fight, where there's a rush of adrenaline and a feeling of triumph to be had when you appeared on the other side.

"It's best to try and make some allies as quickly as you can. There will be new Submissives here who will be looking for someone to help give them some basic rights, like the ability to make purchases or get a job."

Damian doesn't like it. "Are you certain it's him?" he asks. He's not even certain this is Timothy. Neither of them are the type to simply ... accept and 'live with it'. If a situation is unsustainable, they work to change it. This is definitely NOT acceptable.

"I heard it. I just didn't accept it." Unlike Tim, apparently, is the implication. He frowns. "So it's best to not have public associations so they're not involved in whatever punishment they decide is fitting?" He doesn't doubt that the three of them can find ways to confer without being seen, despite how prevalent Damian is positive surveillance is here. But Clark is another story. Supes are NOT stealthy, no matter how many times Damian tells them. (Well, tells the youngest version.)

"That seems counterproductive if they'll be punished for whatever I do," Damian says, though there's a hint of thoughtfulness to it. He hadn't considered that his assigned place in this ridiculous society might make him able to protect someone with a lower caste. "Is that what you need, assistance with rights?"

Tim's lips thin as he presses them together. It's not a question he likes but he can't say he hasn't thought it.

"I can not be certain that it is not an alternate timeline's version of Bruce. He's younger and all events that we've spoken of have lined up but I can not be 100% certain. Just as I can't be certain about you," They'll have to compare notes at some point but not now and not in public.

"I thought about that not having a connection with a person would help but there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to the things or the people they choose," He'd ended up with strangers and friends alike, even when attempting to avoid it. "They don't seem to overstep blood relatives."

A grim bit of information that he feels he has to impart. He knows it's something he still worries about with Bruce, he doesn't have that protection.

"There are a lot of things that seem counterproductive here. You're not going to find a lot of sense in the decisions that are made here. They claim we are test subjects but follow no scientific method that I've heard of. They say they need a year to test us but some have been here for four or more and others disappear overnight after only a few." Tim feels himself working into a rant about this place and how frustrating their methods are but cuts himself off there.

"It's what we all need when we first get here as Submissives. I have all the rights now that the city will allow because I've negotiated and put that into my contract." He's not up for grabs Damian, as unlikely as you'd want to have him. Although he can just imagine the glee the younger would have as having Tim as a servant.

"Yes, I'm not certain of you either," Damian says. He pauses and then admits without looking at Tim at all. "But you are a familiar face and for the time being, I prefer to believe you are. I will ... change my opinion if investigation proves we're not who either of us believes the other to be." Doubting is sensible. Damian would be sure it wasn't Timothy if he accepted it at face value.

"I doubt there could be any true scientific reason for any of this. It makes more sense for that to be the facade they put on their actions. Like villains typically like to pretend to mask their real motivations with some ridiculous false altruism. So finding their goals would more be finding their real purpose, not investigating the false one they present, no?" Damian says.

"The process of choosing - is it as arbitrary as it seems, or did you resist and thus were branded Submissive?" Damian asks. though he did as well, so if that's the reasoning it, like most things here, makes no sense. "Father protects you then?"

[OOC: If this shows up twice, I'm sorry, i could have SWORN I sent it earlier. I am not worried if I put it SOMEWHERE ELSE. lol]

"It's likely we can never be certain. If there is a variation it might be so small that it will never come up in conversation," Tim isn't really sweating such a small detail anyway. Unless this Damian somehow never met Bruce and stayed with his grandfather he doesn't see why it needs to matter here.

That is the first time that someone has come out and said what a waste of time it is to concentrate on the lack of scientific practice. That complaining about it is a waste of time and isn't helping get any of them closer to home.

He hates that it's Damian who does that.

He drops the subject.

"It is entirely arbitrary as far I can tell. Whether you fight them off or go along with it. Whether you're suited to the role or not," No comment on where Tim sits or not but he shakes his head.

"Bruce is also a Submissive, contracted with Clark. My contract partner's name is Kyle." That's not to say that Bruce doesn't protect him, but he's answering the question he thinks Damian is really asking.

"Most likely not," Damian allows, plainly not pleased about it. Damian at any age has always hated not knowing something. "We know that if nothing else, our timelines don't align. In any other circumstances, we need only look for the nearest Flash to blame." Timeline nonsense is almost always a Flash's fault, in Damian's experience.

Damian gives Tim a little frown at the lack of response. It's not arguing his point. Damian has learned to rarely entirely trust when Drake doesn't argue - even when Damian is inarguably correct.

The news that his father is a Submissive though at least has Damian sitting up straighter, green eyes going wide. "That's absurd. Father always serves as a leading role, not a following one." While he's not always in control of the Justice League or other teams, Batman always holds some authority. The idea of him needing to contract himself to Superman is ...

He doesn't know. He just knows he hates it.

He's scowling now instead of the almost-pout of a frown he'd had a moment before. "And this Kyle doesn't interfere with your ability to do your duty?"

Tim has had time to get used to not knowing if Bruce is his own Bruce. The man treats him the same, or close enough. Clearly, he has the same morals and hang-ups as his own Bruce although a younger version.

"Don't lump Bart in with that assumption. He causes trouble, yes but the time travel stuff wasn't things he caused," He immediately has to defend his friend against Damian who never treated any of them fairly.

Tim slumps back into the train seat next to Damian when the boy straightens in shock exuding an air of 'there's nothing wrong here' to the other passengers.

"You'll need to do basic research into BDSM dynamics and etiquette. While this place has a very one-sided view of how that dynamic works. A Submissive does not necessarily mean a follower," and vice versus but he's not insulting Damian's intelligence by pointing that out, "the locals will adhere to the perverted view but other LIERs will expect more respect.

"He does not but that's between me and him." He's not discussing his relationship with Kyle further, not in public.

Damian has NOT had time yet. And while Damian has the same ability as all the bats do to adjust plans on the fly as needed for missions, he is not extremely good at dealing with change on a personal level. He likes his life to be ordered as he sets it. Disruptions in that make him surly. (Well. MORE surly.)

"Yes," Damian says, succinct. He gets along decently well with Bart ... mostly. The Flashes all tend to grate on his nerves. But he's not going to rule out future time mishaps. It happens to them all.

"I understand the basics tenant," Damian says, stiff and haughty and absolutely lying. Prior to this he knew of its existence and has been involved in a mission targeting drug manufacturers at a nightclub that serviced that type of ... niche. But otherwise he hasn't looked into it. "But by the laws of this place, Submissive DOES mean follower and subservient. They're allowed no basic agency without the say-so of their ... contracted supervisor, no?" Ridiculous that his father needs the permission of Superman to do basic activities.

"As long as he is not keeping you beneath his thumb in some way," Damian allows with another scowl. It comes off as angry, as Damian usually does, but in this instance it's protective rather than anger at Tim himself.

Tim hopes that Damian won't get the time to get used to the city, he hopes he'll be deemed unsuitable or more understandably too young to be here and sent home. He also knows that's entirely unlikely.

"That is true, you'll have to keep up a decent facade with the locals here but they won't like you even if you do. It's the other LIERs that will expect a proper understanding." He doesn't think Damian will have any trouble with the former. The kid is perfectly capable of acting like the world owes him something.

"Treating a Submissive like the city expects you to won't earn you any allies," and this is clearly the part Tim is questioning Damian's abilities to fulfil. If you want to bring new allies in you get Dick or Tim; not Damian.

The boy gets that long calculating look at his last comment, Tim is almost certain that he's misreading the concern that's coming across but there is doubt.

"He treats me well. Bruce approved of the contract." He encouraged it actually.

Damian scowls. "The others held here I can simply leave be. If I need to sign some kind of contract for the sake of appearances, it need not be real in any sense and I'd hardly need to know any rules of that sort of thing." He'll just ignore that and pretend it doesn't exist and find ways to gather information until he has a plan to bring down those in authority. Even if Drake and his father haven't yet figured it out, they'll be able to help enact a plan, along with Superman.

"I would not treat a person the way this place does. I'd at least give them pants for a train ride," Damian says. If his tone were anymore dry, it would be a desert.

Damian is arrogant, entitled, and frequently can be callus to the feelings of people around him. But he has no innate desire to be cruel for the sake of it. He usually has his reasons for violence. And with his limited understanding, what he knows of the city is that it's standards are cruel and in need of being dismantled.

"Father's judgment is sometimes lacking in terms of people," Damian said. "But I suppose that's a point in his favor. I'll judge for myself. But if you're in no danger or harassment from him, then I doubt he'll be of much interest." Which didn't mean he wouldn't stalk and spy on this Kyle extensively.

Tim wants to comment that it's unlikely to work quite the way Damian is already laying it out but he doesn't think the boy will learn until it happens. He'll likely just try to distance himself from whatever Submissive he convinces to sign on with him.

He'll either make the connection or he won't and Tim isn't going to try and influence it towards avoiding it.

"Yes well, they're going to do as much as possible to get you pantsless again. Especially if they can get you to do it yourself. Watch out for new foods that are being promoted, chances are they'll contain an aphrodisiac."
