Well, unless the randomness is the meaning it finds. Maybe it's the other way - some way to try to ensure that the bigger picture is that everything is 'equal'... by having an even number of extremes on either side to balance out to zero.

That's... enitrely conjecture, though. Especially if, say, the Dominants can collect more than one Submissive under their care, but the Submissives can't do the same.
