TDM #4 OVERFLOW

« « « TEST DRIVE MEME » » »

« « « HERE WE ARE AGAIN

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

You’re here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You’re a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your highrise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You’re a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you’ll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms.

Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new and old arrivals.

Oh, and one more thing. It's fucking cold. Better bundle up.

» » » LIES TRAVEL IN COMPANY

After stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « END IN THE DISCORD

While the societal climate between Dominants and Submissives remains somewhat neutral throughout Duplicity, there has been the occasional whisper of defiance and call for equality. Yet, demonstrations and visible proof of this unhappiness spreads faster by word of mouth on a day exactly when you need it most.

Welcome to Autonomy, a "traveling" nightclub that is never in the same place twice. People wanting to attend only learn of its lucrative location and password hours before it opens for business. Tonight, I choose the third door will get you inside and into the temporary freedom club Autonomy has to offer. In this circle, there are no assigned designations and no consequences for taking a role that isn't the one given by society. So, a Dominant may become the Submissive they've always wanted to be—or vice versa. Dominants and Submissives alike are able to mingle without repercussion and be themselves. Food, drinks, and private areas for more intimate – or if your preference is sexual – encounters are provided. Donations are accepted at any point during the night to further Autonomy's attempts of spreading the fulfillment that comes from being untitled.

On the night you choose to visit, Autonomy is holding a random lottery for temporary connections. When entering, you have the choice of submitting your name into this drawing to be paired with someone else in the club regardless of designation. A short while later, a message will pop up on your device with the name and information of your partner, and whether or not you choose to meet them is purely at your discretion. Having more than one connection isn't completely unusual either.

» » » TABLE IT FOR LATER

Gratification of being a successful Dominant or Submissive isn't necessarily simple. Learning curves are to be made, and mistakes will happen. Led by a Dominant and Submissive couple – Miriam and Victoria, who have been paired for twenty-two years – a monthly meeting for unattached Dominants and Submissives is held in the conference room of Morning Wood motel in the Down. The meeting starts a few minutes after nine and has no designated end time. The couple introduce themselves and explain the purpose of the meeting: learn the proper method for a new kink and possibly find your perfect partner. The space is intimate and well-stocked with refreshments.

To begin, Victoria, while blindfolded, balances on her hands and knees with her back perfectly level. Her partner, when ready, places various items on the level surface–a full cup, a plate. The Submissive is meant to hold the items until the Dominant believes she's reached her limit. The exercise is one of trust and understanding. The demonstration is a short one, followed by Miriam removing the blindfold and soothing her Submissive. The words are whispered low and with care, clearly a method that is specific to this couple. The process is concluded with the pair handing out workups, videos, and answering questions. Anyone wishing to practice Purposeful Submission can do so in the open room with a random volunteer, aided by the couple, or can find someone to take to one of the rented rooms. Sex may follow any scene but is not necessarily included. Experimenting with unattached Dominants and Submissives allows for new relationships to form.

« « « MOD & OOC NOTES

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles based on birthdays; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, character will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chose "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide. All characters who have blue eyes or one blue eye and another color are Submissives. All characters who have brown eyes or one brown eye and another color are Dominants. Characters with any other color eyes are Dominants. To use this TDM as a door pass please link this on your app and place whether it is Dominant or Submissive.

Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!!

Juno Steel | Penumbra Podcast | Dominant

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-17 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I. Here We Are Again

Juno can tell almost as soon as he arrives here that this place is about as cheap as the free mints by the checkout corner of a dime store. It oozes sex, corruption, and the sort of poor decisions that can only be made by those with nothing to lose. That's not the part of the city they send him to, of course. Most of Juno's initial impression is of the shiny, the clean, the Up.

He hates it.

When he breaks away he slips into the Down, into the slimy, dirty underbelly of the city, and while he's not about to let himself relax there, some of the particular tension associated with having too much space and not enough gathered dust eases away from him. In the Up he can see the sky, no dome, and it's so wrong that Juno can't get out of there fast enough. In the Down he's going to skulk about and try to figure out what he can, preferably in the shittiest bar around.

Once he's had a couple of drinks, he's ready to start asking questions. Like "What sort of radiation effects do you get here?", "What's a lady got to do to find someone to keep him warm?", and sometimes "What's the law enforcement around here like?"

II. Lies Travel in Company

It's the kind of scene that makes Juno wish he was anywhere but here, or maybe dead. He watches the Submissives that board almost as much as he pays attention to what they see outside. If he's a little anxious and twitchy throughout this experience, well, that's hardly his fault.

He gets off when the inhabitants of the Down do, feeling the need to be on something that's not moving almost as much as he feels the need to get away from all of this. Juno leans his shoulder against an ally wall, but if he notices he's being watched he'll just shrug.

"It seems like this is cleaner than all of what was going on there."

III. End in the Discord

This is much more Juno's style, and he's not afraid to make that very obvious. It isn't that he's more Submissive than Dominant — he is, but that's not the point. It's that these kinds of societies and roles aren't very enjoyable, and he'd rather off avoid the whole thing. Third door, sure, why not, or no door at all.

Here he can mingle like everyone he talks to is a person, and he's submitted his name to the drawing because why the hell not. Juno's also halfway through his glass of whiskey and ready to flirt with most people because he'd rather not think right now, and sex is a great way not to think.

"I'm surprised they didn't pass out mascara and have us all draw lines on our throats," he says, then, "Can I buy you a drink?"

Juno was a scruffy lady, and life in Hyperion City wasn't easy for anyone, especially hadn't been easy for him. It meant he'd learned to find pleasure where he could take it, and that was what rooms like this one were designed for.

They fell onto the bed together, and Juno ran his hands over her body. He was ready to embrace what they were doing because she seemed as much in favor of getting down to the physical pleasure of it as he was. Juno wasn't someone who needed to be wooed, not when there was plenty of advantage in both approaches.

"Let me see what bad looks like on you," he murmured.

[ Continued from here. ]

When Juno was growing up, the drinking age in Hyperion City was 8 and spending time in a bar was less destructive than a lot of possibilities. It's likely he was never going to have the healthiest of attitudes towards alcohol. Juno doesn't have the healthiest of attitudes towards most things.

"There's still an Earth with people," Juno says. It's hard for him to find Mars impressive the same way that it's hard to find sunrise on Hyperion City impressive, he knows all the shadows and the dark places of it. "There's also a place called New Detroit on the Outer Rim." Of course, Juno hasn't been there. He's never left Mars and before ending up here, he'd say that he probably never would. He belongs there, with the dust and the grime and the no hope of a future.

"All they have is Earth where you're from? Where do the poor live?"
pheck: edited by me (21)

[personal profile] pheck 2019-01-20 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
"What's the Outer Rim?" Funny enough, when someone had mentioned they thought people had been brought here from other dimensions, they'd pointed at things like vampires and mutants as proof. Gavin hadn't believed them. Now, if they'd gone with 'there are some people here from a world where there are colonies in space', he might've actually believed them. His curiosity is obvious.

"Yeah. Just Earth," He tilts his head a little at Juno's second question, puzzled, "The same place they've always lived? In the shittier parts of the city. Closer to factories or docks or wherever else people don't really want to live and real estate is cheap."

He'd grown up in a place just like that, a crumbling overpass in their backyard and an abandoned factory a block away.

"So, I gotta ask. Is Mars where the rich people went? Or is it where they sent the poor?" He could think of scenarios where it could go either way.
justaneye: (grump 1)

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-20 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Everything on Earth gets expensive, sooner or later." Maybe it's not inevitable, but from Juno can tell it was headed that way for a while. And besides, it's not like he cares, not like he'd ever find himself on Earth without trying really hard, and he has no reason to do that.

"Outer Rim's on the outskirts of the Solar System, Neptune, Kuiper belt, the rest."

For the question, Juno shrugs. "Maybe the optimistic poor, back when it started. Or those not too poor to afford the ticket off the planet. Hyperion City was the first place settled after Earth." And it shows.
pheck: (02)

[personal profile] pheck 2019-01-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Sure... but you'd think shit on an uninhabitable planet would be even more expensive," Gavin counters, "You'd think the rich people would move off planet to nice, new, clean colonies and they'd leave the poor behind on a polluted, flooded Earth. But you're saying the opposite is true. Weird. Or is it strictly Mars.

You'd think New Detroit would also be a piece of shit. Just like old Detroit."

He smirks to himself. He was born and raised, born during one of Detroit's lowest points and he'd never left. Not that he'd ever admit it, but the city always felt like part of him. He liked it.

"So, what do you do on Mars, Juno?" He half expected it to be some kind of mining colony or something.
justaneye: (Default)

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-22 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not uninhabitable, you just need domes, and if you spend too much time underground or out in the open the radiation will either kill you or drive you mad." Mars. It's a nice place.

New Detroit is probably a piece of shit, but Juno can't really speak to that, since he's never been to the Outer Rim.

"I'm a private eye. Run my own detective agency. Which means that mostly I get shot at a lot. What do you do?" What do people even do on Earth, before space travel? Raise cattle?
pheck: edited by me (21)

[personal profile] pheck 2019-01-23 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, is that all. Sounds almost... uninhabitable without special structures," He teases. What's a little radiation anyway? He can't really imagine being stuck in a place like that. How did people keep from going stir crazy and wanting to leave the domes? At least Earth gave the impression that you could travel anywhere, even if you couldn't.

Gavin looks up from his drink, eyebrows rising in surprise.

"No shit? I'm a detective. Detroit PD," No cattle. It would likely be a struggle to even raise healthy pigeons in Detroit, "Shooting inside domes that keep you from dying from radiation seems like a pretty fucking dumb decision."
justaneye: (working)

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-24 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Now you're nitpicking," Juno answers back, but he crosses his arms. "I don't know what you're picturing, either, but I think it's something very different from the reality. It's not like you could shoot through the domes, and I'm not usually shooting near the edges."

But for the rest, well, Juno orders himself another drink.

"You're a cop, then. What's that like in Detroit?"
pheck: (16)

[personal profile] pheck 2019-01-24 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh. Glass domes? Metal domes? I guess it makes sense to make them too thick for a bullet to get through," He ducks his head a little to run his finger over the scar across his nose, scratching it lightly. It seems like a bit of a nervous habit.

"Sure. A cop. But specifically, a detective," He'd earned that promotion, damn it, "I'd think it'd be the same as any other big city. Drugs, gangs, robberies, murders. It's busy. Hard work. But I like it.

How'd you get into the business? Most private i's I've met have been ex-cops."
justaneye: (Default)

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-25 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hyperion City is one of the most corrupt places in the solar system, and Juno has a lot of opinions on the police department in particular. Which, well, the police department tends to have a lot of opinions about Juno Steel.

"A bullet? We mostly use laser guns." Even so, the idea that he might miss so badly that he'd hit the dome is pretty offensive.

"And there, you have me pegged. I was a cop for a while. Left." Or got fired or asked to leave but it's all got the same end result. "You couldn't pay me to go back."
pheck: (10)

[personal profile] pheck 2019-01-27 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Like before when Juno had mentioned colonies on Mars, Gavin's eyes lit up with curiosity when he mentions laser guns, his inner child excited that Juno seemed to be living in the world of a science fiction novel.

"Seriously? Do you have one with you?" Because he was ready to pull out his service pistol and let Juno take a look. He wondered if it would look like an antique to the guy.

"So, a laser... that's gotta do more damage than a bullet, right? What's an injury from that even look like?" A little morbid curiosity, but, hey, they'd probably both seen their fair share of shit.

"We're working on it. It shouldn't take too much longer to get the space together." But then it would still be at least a few weeks before opening any performance, unless they do something small and just work their asses off on it. Which they could do.

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-20 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm." Juno has no idea what is involved in getting a space together for something like this, but he imagines it can't be that complicated. The sets from Rita's shows never looked like all that much. It was probably mostly special effects. "Let me know when you open, maybe I'll come."

Why not do something that'll make him think of Rita and make him miss her that much more?
justaneye: (upset)

Peter Nureyev

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-19 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Continued from here ]

Whatever this city is and wherever it is, what Juno sees when Nureyev moves towards him is a complete impossibility. Because that undeniably is him and Juno wastes a few precious seconds in which he could plan his reaction by looking to see if he can still run away from all of this. But Nureyev has seen him, and Juno has seen Nureyev, and the door is clear on the other side of the room.

There's no escape to be found in this city anyway, only postponement, but even that would be damn sight better than actually facing this right now and dealing with whatever all of it means, whatever Peter Nureyev means.

Of course Nureyev is going to be mad at him, and maybe it's better to just deal with that now instead of putting it off any longer, maybe it's better to take his beatings and slink into some dark alley to lick his wounds. Even so, Juno's eyes scan Peter Nureyev's face and his body like it's something he can reassure himself with, like it's something that he deserves to be able to look at. Nureyev is marked like the submissive in this place and that does something to Juno's chest for a second, makes it tight and uncomfortable, before he realizes that Nureyev is a clever man and a thief and there's no guarantee that it is any more real than the rest of whatever identity Nureyev is currently wearing.

Juno has imagined this meeting a thousand times, imagined how Nureyev would act. He's imagined throwing himself on Nureyev's mercy, confessing that he made a mistake and he wants everything, all of it, back. Most of the time he imagines Nureyev saying no, or walking away, and Juno knows that he's earned that, that that's what he deserves.

He opens his mouth, says "I—," and closes it again.

"It wasn't presented as optional," he says, because he assumed that Nureyev means the city more than the bar, because he doesn't know what else to say. He should give the man a chance to walk away, give him an excuse to do what he should. "You're looking well." It's a banal, dumb thing to say, because Nureyev always looks good and Juno knows that he looks like shit. But it's something to fall back on, right now, and right now Juno needs that.
rosebyanyother: official art by mk buckley (I will remember the words that you said)

"I suppose it wasn't..."

Peter muses, ignoring the compliment - the empty pleasantry, really, he thinks - for now. He also does not make any effort, either, to return it. Juno doesn't look bad either, but it's a step further than Peter feels like going at the moment.

He has so many emotions flooding his brain and because he needs to focus, he does the easiest thing for him: places them in a box called 'Peter Nureyev' and burrows just a little more into the skin of Morrigan Prince. Of course he's not going to pretend that he doesn't know Juno. That would be pointless. But Morrigan Prince can be a more distant stranger. Morrigan Prince isn't foolishly in love with the scruffy detective sitting in front of him. He's not angry at him or betrayed by him.

It's fine. He's fine.

"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised to see you down here, though. I suppose you chose the wrong door. For you."

He cannot imagine that Juno is comfortable being designated Dominant. For more than one reason.
justaneye: (fuss)

[personal profile] justaneye 2019-01-27 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nureyev knows Juno in a way that people sometimes do, where they seem to figure him out without Juno having ever agreed for them to do that. Maybe he's been making it pretty obvious just what he thinks of this whole classification system, but he's also only been talking to Peter for a few seconds and there's still a feeling of being called out with all of it.

He can see the ways that Nureyev isn't Nureyev right now, the way he holds himself like he's someone else. It makes Juno hurt a little and, too, makes him love Nureyev a little more. "No one here seems fond of questioning that."

Nureyev'll be fine here, Juno can see that already. He'd be fine anywhere, and better off without Juno.

"Have you been here long enough to meet the locals?" Of course he has. He could have been here less time than Juno and still have formulated and started acting on his approach.
rosebyanyother: (black holes and revelations)

[personal profile] rosebyanyother 2019-02-08 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I'm quite comfortable with the locals, at this point."

That's...a lie, but then again Peter does lie so much, doesn't he? Or at least he stretches the truth regularly. So thin, usually, that it's almost a lie anyway.

And of course, there's no further explanation on what that means exactly. A few days? A week? He'll let Juno do his own interpreting. He's the detective, after all.

Peter rests an elbow on the bar and leans into it, chin resting on the top of his hand as his gaze sweeps up and down Juno's form. In all truth, Morrigan Prince is...not a very different man from Rex Glass. Perhaps a little less effusive. Stuck somewhere between Glass and the man who truly is Peter Nureyev. (His personalities usually are facets of himself, honestly. Writ large or shrunk down, certain traits magnified to suit his needs. But Prince is an identity he's going to have to hold...indefinitely. It makes sense for him to be not quite so different.) But. There is a lazy detachedness to him, here.

"How long did it take you to find your way down here?"

Nureyev deserves better than to have Juno try to make things up to him. Nureyev deserves better than Juno.

Sitting here, across from him, Juno still can't keep himself from drinking in the sight of the other man, from trying to pick up what aspects of him are a different self on display and what aspects are the man underneath it all, the one who wouldn't lie to Juno.

Juno thinks they could probably stare at each other this way for quite a while.

"Six hours," is what he says. "That place up there feels like a fox trying to court a hare." Juno is sure they're being watched just as much down here, but maybe there can be a thick enough haze of smoke to block some of the screens.

"What should I call you?"

Despite everything, a faint smile curls its way across Peter's face. Accompanied by a faint lift of one eyebrow. Well. He hadn't completely expected Juno to continue to keep his identity secret. If he let himself, he might even be shocked.

Instead, he's just...amused. And maybe a little pleased.

"Oh, so you forgot? I think I should be offended." That's for the benefit of anyone who might be listening. 'What should I call you' is a strange question for two people who seem to otherwise know each other. "Morrigan Prince."

It's accompanied with a sharp grin.

Juno's an asshole, fine, he's not going to deny that. That's most of why Peter deserves better.

But he's not going to be an asshole in this place, not about that anyway, where if Nureyev has managed to keep his identity a secret here than that's something Juno can respect.

It's hard not to feel watched all the time, in this place.

"Morrigan," he repeats back. "Sometimes I need reminding of things."

Like why he shouldn't fall for the man in front of him, or why he shouldn't act on having fallen, because the sight of that grin does something to Juno's insides.

The absolute truth of the matter is that Peter hasn't been able to keep his identity entirely a secret. Not that it makes Juno's gesture any less meaningful to him.

(It shouldn't be, he doesn't want it to be, but it burrows.)

"Not the best trait in a private eye, I'd say."

Is that cruel? Probably. But Peter deserves to be a little bit cold. He's had his heart broken.

Juno doesn't deserve the thing he's being scolded for, not on a literal level. He knows Nureyev's name, it's carved into him, unforgettable and meaningful. Too meaningful to throw out casually, and that's what he's hanging his head out for.

But Juno's not about to protest, when he knows it's not about Nureyev's name, and when he knows that he deserves everything else he might get.

Juno's eyes are searching as he looks over Nureyev, but he couldn't say what he's searching for.

"A good private eye shouldn't get kidnapped either. So instead of trying to figure it out, I'm going to ask. Is there anything you need?"

"Well, that's a question with many answers. From you specifically?"

His brow is slightly raised, looking at Juno with a mixture of (distant) curiosity and faint amusement. As if he's only really half-way interested in the answer. Not entirely the truth, because he...wonders. About why Juno is asking. But he isn't about to allow Juno to think that he has even a little bit of power over him. Not at the moment.
