TDM #1 OVERFLOW

« « « TEST DRIVE MEME » » »

« « « OUT OF CLUTTER FIND SIMPLICITY

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

» » » LIES TRAVEL IN COMPANY

After stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « END IN THE DISCORD

While the societal climate between Dominants and Submissives remains somewhat neutral throughout Duplicity, there has been the occasional whisper of defiance and call for equality. Yet, demonstrations and visible proof of this unhappiness spreads faster by word of mouth on a day exactly when you need it most.

Welcome to Autonomy, a "traveling" nightclub that is never in the same place twice. People wanting to attend only learn of its lucrative location and password hours before it opens for business. Tonight, I choose the third door will get you inside and into the temporary freedom club Autonomy has to offer. In this circle, there are no assigned designations and no consequences for taking a role that isn't the one given by society. So, a Dominant may become the Submissive they've always wanted to be—or vice versa. Dominants and Submissives alike are able to mingle without repercussion and be themselves. Food, drinks, and private areas for more intimate – or if your preference is sexual – encounters are provided. Donations are accepted at any point during the night to further Autonomy's attempts of spreading the fulfillment that comes from being untitled.

On the night you choose to visit, Autonomy is holding a random lottery for temporary connections. When entering, you have the choice of submitting your name into this drawing to be paired with someone else in the club regardless of designation. A short while later, a message will pop up on your device with the name and information of your partner, and whether or not you choose to meet them is purely at your discretion. Having more than one connection isn't completely unusual either.

» » » TABLE IT FOR LATER

Gratification of being a successful Dominant or Submissive isn't necessarily simple. Learning curves are to be made, and mistakes will happen. Led by a Dominant and Submissive couple – Miriam and Victoria, who have been paired for twenty-two years – a monthly meeting for unattached Dominants and Submissives is held in the conference room of Morning Wood motel in the Down. The meeting starts a few minutes after nine and has no designated end time. The couple introduce themselves and explain the purpose of the meeting: learn the proper method for a new kink and possibly find your perfect partner. The space is intimate and well-stocked with refreshments.

To begin, Victoria, while blindfolded, balances on her hands and knees with her back perfectly level. Her partner, when ready, places various items on the level surface–a full cup, a plate. The Submissive is meant to hold the items until the Dominant believes she's reached her limit. The exercise is one of trust and understanding. The demonstration is a short one, followed by Miriam removing the blindfold and soothing her Submissive. The words are whispered low and with care, clearly a method that is specific to this couple. The process is concluded with the pair handing out workups, videos, and answering questions. Anyone wishing to practice Purposeful Submission can do so in the open room with a random volunteer, aided by the couple, or can find someone to take to one of the rented rooms. Sex may follow any scene but is not necessarily included. Experimenting with unattached Dominants and Submissives allows for new relationships to form.

« « « MOD & OOC NOTES

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles based on birthdays; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, character will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chose "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide. For characters with a birthday falling in the months of January to June, their designation will be Dominant. For characters with a birthday falling in the months of July to December, their designation will be Submissive. For characters with an unknown birthday, their designation will be Dominant.

Arrival into Duplicity has not been used as a prompt as it is a rather large part of introducing the game and will be saved for the first in-game log. But feel free to thread it on the TDM. Also, any locations throughout Duplicity are available for TDM prompts as well!

Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!!

[It's only after she's done poking fun at her sister for entering the lottery that Imoen will do it herself. They do need connections, and it would be a wasted night if she didn't bother making any. Plus, Imoen enjoys people. In contrast with the rest of her experience here, the club feels a bit like home; a bar is a bar. There will be drunks, and where there are drunks there will be entertainment.

And when the device dings and shows her a picture of the bar, it's a bit of fun to compare the shot with the bar itself, trailing a hand along the edge as she steps down to the last...seat. On seeing Diana, she instantly regrets sticking to her old adventuring clothes. Diana's, well, fabulous no matter how minimal the style is meant to be.

Imoen holds up her device.]

Been waiting long?

[Her drink is nearly gone, and she can't help but wish she could get at least tipsy. There's just nothing that hits her like Themysciran wine, and a century of basic sobriety can be difficult. If she'd known where she'd end up a hundred years after leaving the island, she definitely would have packed at least one bottle of wine. Just a cup now and then, that nice heady feeling, might have made the past century a little easier.

Diana sets her glass down on the bar just as she's addressed, and smiles at Imoen on reflex. It isn't an insincere gesture, and it buys her a moment to size up her new connection. Envy flickers through her for a moment at seeing how she's dressed--it looks far more practical than what she's chosen to wear, not to mention more comfortable. Still, one thing she'd learned over the years is that appearances can matter, and from what she already knows about this place, they matter too much. If she's going to be a Dominant, she may as well look like one for now.

The Amazon shakes her head, still smiling, and swivels on the bar stool until she's completely facing the other woman.]

Not at all.

[She offers a hand forward in greeting, still smiling, all of her attention on Imoen.]

I'm Diana.

Heya, Diana. I'm Imoen.

[There is a deliberate disregard for making the introduction in any way formal, just a chipper acknowledgement of the name and tossing her own out there. Imoen gladly grasps Diana's hand, but rather than a simple shake or even attempting to kiss it like some socialite, she simply squeezes and drops it to settle onto the next stool.

Her gaze does shift to Diana's glass, incorrectly concluding that she might be feeling a pleasant haze, before returning to the amazon herself, all open curiosity. It's easy enough to see that Diana doesn't have the submissive mark, prompting Imoen to tap her own throat where it might have been, indicating where her thoughts are turning.]

Gotta say, I thought scarves would be the big fashion in here. Make it hard to tell who's supposed to be assigned what once the party's done.

[The greeting is just as good as any other, and Diana is content to lean slightly against the bar as she keeps her body angled towards Imoen. At the other woman's comment, she nods thoughtfully. A quick glance out at the dance floor tells her that there are very few people wearing anything besides jewelry around their necks. It's a strange thing to look for, one hadn't considered before Imoen mentioned it. Briefly, she considers why that may be, but only comes up with one thought.]

Outside this group, the majority of people seem... content with the current social hierarchy. It may seem wrong to them to hide who they are.

[She doesn't understand it, though she's trying to. She's new to this land and this society, and it isn't her place to judge without learning more about them. Diana signals the bartender for another drink, and as she waits for it, she shrugs.]

Besides that, the tattoos may not be the only way to track who is Dominant and who is Submissive.

Guess that's true.

[Imoen leans an elbow on the counter and props her chin up, trying to think of some clever way to get around that. Everyone had been told that the whole thing was about gathering data, hadn't they? Information had to be gathered somehow, and it didn't look like they were being chaperoned for their, uh. Encounters.]

Hard to sneak around it when you don't know how they're tracking, too. Even the best invisibility spell's worthless if someone can just sniff you out.

[And because in her mind this is entirely too serious, she raises her eyebrows and jokes:] Which is why it's always important to bathe.

[Diana has never heard of any magic that can track so many people at once, so that leaves some kind of technology as the most likely option. An implant, perhaps? She remembers arriving disoriented, and a pain on her hand. She glances down at her palm, and only sees the door she chose printed there on her skin. The Amazon pulls her hand into a fist, trying not to think about it too much.

She's distracted from her brooding by Imoen's words. Her interest is sparked anew, and Diana leans a little closer. She opens her mouth to ask about this spell (and any others Imoen might know; magic is something she's always had an interest in, but no true talent for), when she cracks a joke about bathing.

And Diana can't help herself: she laughs, freely and melodically. It only lasts a few seconds, but when she finally collects herself, she's still smiling.]

One of many reasons, yes. [She clears her throat, trying to gather her thoughts once more.] An invisibility spell? You can use magic, then?
buffleheaded: (I have a big stick.)

[personal profile] buffleheaded 2018-09-26 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah, magic. One of the few areas Imoen has been able to come into her own. Granted, she had the advantage of growing up in a library, with a mage for a father figure, but it still took work to learn, and she feels perfectly entitled to be proud of it once in a while. Besides, Diana seems entertained, and that's worth something, too. So instead of playing it down, she acknowledges it with a nod.]

Nothing that'd be safe to show off, 'course. But I am a wizard. It's just hard to peg me for one because I accidentally exiled my beard to another dimension.

[She flourishes a hand in a mock bow.]

I've got the studies-musty-old-books sort of magic, and my sister's the sort where things start happening because she sings. It's pretty neat.

[personal profile] monomachy 2018-09-27 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Humor is something Diana has always appreciated in a person, and Imoen seems to have no shortage of it. The wizard's joke earns her another laugh, and Diana's smile doesn't fade.]

I'd like to see you show off, some day.

[Partly because magic had always fascinated her, and partly because a little mystical help is never amiss. All things considered, Diana is benevolent, but also extremely practical.]

Is your sister here as well?
buffleheaded: (I have a big stick.)

[personal profile] buffleheaded 2018-09-27 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll figure out something good to show you.

[It's one of those impulse decisions that aren't necessarily the wisest. Actually, it's decidedly unwise, and she knows it is the instant the words are out her mouth. The spells that look impressive are dangerous, the spells that aren't dangerous will be hard to see and appreciate, and she can only have so many spells in a day.

But Diana is nice, and Imoen wants to impress her. Besides, to do otherwise would be dangerously close to behaving responsibly. That would be a terrible fate.]

Yep. Name's Syeira, and if we were betting on who's going to put a stop to this whole operation, you know I'm putting my gold on her. [She pauses, as if recalling something, then adds a complete lie.] Unless they figure out a way to take advantage of her deathly fear of water.
monomachy: buckybear @ ij (whatever it is)

[personal profile] monomachy 2018-09-29 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
[That's more than enough for Diana, and she raises her glass in a mock toast.]

I can't wait to see what you come up with.

[Which is true. Knowing exactly, or even roughly, what kind of magic Imoen is capable of could prove helpful.

Her brows raise at that, but she smiles as well. She has no reason to feel like Imoen might lie to her, and files that little bit of knowledge about her sister away in her mind.]

I'll have to keep an eye out for her.
