It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy. This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses. To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues. ... and you’re here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity. After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a paper gown to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation. If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You’re a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You’re a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you’ll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms. Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new and old arrivals. The weather is rather cold and icy. |
» » » WALKING TOUR
The cold, icy winter weather has seen to it that there is an unfortunate interruption with the usual city tour for the newest arrivals to Duplicity. Some of the train tracks have a dangerous amount of ice coating them and sections of travel are now unavailable via train. City officials still believe that the tours are important to integrate new LIERs to Duplicity so they have organised personal walking tours held by current LIERs. New arrivals will be paired with their own tour guide; they can take the suggested path or take their barely dressed charge on a more ad-hoc tour. It might be considerate to let them change into something warmer first! Important landmarks and checkpoints like Fiddler’s Square, North Park, The Up and Down Courts, the People Zoo and of course S.L.U.T. need to be marked off on the tours but there have also been fun local stores which have set-ups for free samples and information booklets. What order and how people travel to them is up to them. |
« « « GALLERIA OF SEX
![]() One of the stops along these new walking tours is a temporary educational art installation that has been set up to display and talk about the rich variety of kinks that are popular in Duplicity. Newcomers are invited to come inside the building, sit on the human furniture to watch and learn or volunteer to participate themselves. Each section has local LIERs and graduated citizens there to help walk those new to the program through the displays, explaining the appeal and draw of each kink. Live demonstrations or performance art are carried out by LIERs who have volunteered, been conscripted or are fulfilling a sentence that would normally land them in the People Zoo. They can and will ask anyone and everyone to step up and be part of the artwork themselves. Some of the displays set up will feature:
We encourage players not to limit themselves in regards to what is on display. There are many more kinks than the ones listed, and Duplicity considers all kinds of sexual acts a form of art. Photo taking is encouraged throughout the exhibition, especially when your own participation is concerned. If you missed the chance to do so, in the moment, you need not worry as the gift shop at the end of the gallery will have many different prints taken over the course of the exhibition available for purchase. Take home a keepsake of your first day in Duplicity. |
« « « ICE TO SEE YOU
![]() Winter does make it harder in Duplicity to enjoy all the pleasures of the flesh that could be on offer in the warmer months. Most who live in the city still need to wrap up with many layers when the weather turns so chilly. But that’s not saying that the city can’t find ways to help keep its residents in the mood. It will first be noticeable to those trying their hand at streaming or posting video footage onto the network. Regardless of a character's state of dress while recording, they will appear completely naked to those watching and no amount of covering up with more articles of material will change that. Others might see it as they set about on their first days getting used to the city’s layout, glancing into a shop window they will notice their own state of undress in their reflection. You might even see it in a particularly shiny bit of ice but no matter where you look, all reflective surfaces will show everyone in their birthday suits, naked as the day they were born. |
« « « BLADES OF GLORY
![]() In a bid to encourage individuals to get out and keep active despite the chilly weather, the city has transformed one of the large tennis courts in the Up into a makeshift outdoor skating rink. In the recreation building attached to the courts-turned-rink the change rooms have been outfitted for people to change into more appropriate clothing. There is also at the front of the building an area to rent skates. Many who get on the ice see no reason to keep apart, as many contracted couples can be seen holding hands or chasing each other as they skate. In the change rooms it isn’t uncommon to see a bit of hanky panky or people getting off at helping others in and out of their skates. There also seems to be a small hot chocolate stand set up inside the building where characters can buy a warm drink to sip on while taking a break from skating. The drink may leave those that consume it feeling especially warm and frisky, with perhaps a bit of extra energy they need to burn off - skating might not cut it. |
« « « MOD & OOC NOTES
Please read carefully. On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice. To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide: If your character would rather have a dog for a pet they are Dominant. If they would rather have a cat for a pet they are Submissive. If your character is from a canon that has neither, pick the choice you believe they would prefer more. To Note: Characters can only swap their designation for one of the following reasons: an event occurs that allows it or there are OOC reasons that make it a necessity. Any swap always requires mod approval and each character can only ever switch once. Characters that are being reapped will keep their previous designation but players can choose to use new tdms with different designations for fun! Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have a good time!! |

My apartment. [ Not home; if she were to refer to any place in this city as that, it would be Pietro's place in the Up. Even then, it only counts as such because her brother is there.
There's enough space without reflective surfaces now that Wanda looks over, actually meeting his gaze for the first time directly. ] I assume you have been to the building already, considering you're not wearing the provided paper gown.

( and he'd hated it. was there anyone that didn't? he'd hated it because it reminded him of too many things from back home. it reminded him of being treated as a second rate person because of who he was and what he could do and he'd wanted to banish those reminders as quickly as he could. clothes won't completely eradicate the memories and thoughts but they help. )
I don't have the legs for that gown. ( it's the mildest of jokes and when he feels her eyes on him, he looks over and shrugs. )
I don't want to be there any longer than I have to.
no subject
You're certainly not alone in that; it leaves a lot to be desired. [ The same could be said for everything in the Down, though. ] Unfortunately, we don't matter as much to the city thanks to this, [ she gestures towards the line down her own throat. ]

( and it's not an unfamiliar feeling. he'd been able to hide back home because he hadn't looked like a mutant to most but as soon as someone found out, it was always possible that they'd sell him out.
he sighs, reaching up to touch the line. )
I've lived in worse spots but it's not like I enjoyed it. I just did it because I had to. Didn't think I'd be going back to those days.

[ Her own Dominant is a kind and generous person, she wouldn't have signed with him otherwise, but she still hates that in order to be treated as something even almost worthy here, she has to tie herself to someone else. Someone better, according to Duplicity's standards.
But then her tone softens as she looks over towards Marcos, lips pressed together for a second. ] I suggest you start trying to make connections now rather than waiting until the three months have passed. It would be better to sign with someone you feel you could trust than allowing them to choose for you.
no subject
( yeah, he hasn't really thought about that. he doesn't really want to think about it not because he doesn't want to cooperate but he just doesn't want to deal with the whole thing.
he brushes a hand over his face and sighs. )
I don't really know if I'm going to trust anyone though. How can you in a place like this?
no subject
They seem to take people from the same world sometimes, so you may find someone you already know. [ And hopefully they're the right destination for a contract, though that much goes unsaid. ] The city also enjoys playing games with us.
[ This time, when Wanda crosses her arms over her chest, it's not to cover herself but instead almost defensive because it bothers her, how easily they toy with people. Herself included. ]
Typically they stick to more... quota-related inspiration, but sometimes they force you to reveal information to others that you might not share otherwise. It can help. [ With a bit of a sardonic curl of her lips she adds, ] Though it's a far from an ideal way to get to know someone.

( marcos doesn't really know what he'd do if he did see someone he knew here. there are a few people that he thinks he could deal with but some others?
yeah, he knows that it would be extremely difficult and uncomfortable. if he ever sees lorna here, he...well, he doesn't know what he's going to do. even if they aren't completely together right now, she's still someone important to him and seeing her here would not be easy.
but he also knows that he doesn't have a choice. marcos takes a breath and rubs a hand against his head. )
So, it's hope for someone I know to show up or end up getting beat around by this place, huh?

[ In a very weird way, Wanda almost lucked out with Quentin. She's still unbelievably livid that her entire life was offered up to him without her consent, regardless of the fact that she saw all of his as well, but it made things easier for her.
Although if she would have just waited another few weeks, she could have signed with Pietro. That fact may actually frustrate her the most, truthfully. ]
You may get better advice from someone who has been here longer, though. Some have been here for over two years and know better what to suggest than I do. Just... Don't wait. [ She presses her lips together for a moment before continuing. ] Don't put it off. The contract or the quota, if you can help it.
[ The advice doesn't come happily; even if Wanda's tone weren't laced with irritation at the city, the displeased look on her face would say it all. ]

( he feels a little embarrassed to admit that, to tell someone that he barely knows that he's doing okay with the whole sex thing. it's not really what he wants to be doing but it's happened and he's an adult who can deal with it.
still, he can feel his cheeks heat up and he almost laughs that that hadn't happened when she'd been naked in the reflection. )
The other thing is what I'm going to have issues with. I don't want to be owned by someone.
no subject
Grief makes it quite difficult to find any desire for romance or sex, after all.
She nods in understanding to the part about contracts, however. Even if she's gotten lucky with her current Dominant, it still bothers her deeply that he's the reason she can do so many things in the city now. ]
There are people here who take it that way, of course, but there are also Dominants who are equally as disgusted by the prospect as we are. You can find someone who gives you freedom and requires nothing from you, someone who is willing to help instead of stake a claim. [ Three months isn't really a lot of time to figure out one from the other, though. ]
But if you don't find someone in time, the city will assign someone to you and you will have no say in who they are.
no subject
( he's heard the whole song and dance about the being assigned to someone if he decides that he's not going to do it on his own. he sighs, rubbing at his forehead and shakes his head. he hasn't met anyone yet that he would feel comfortable giving that kind of power to.
so, would there be a difference in being assigned someone and choosing someone especially if he wouldn't feel comfortable either way? )
I haven't really thought about it yet. ( he shrugs, peering out ahead of them. ) My hope is that I wouldn't be here that long but I don't think that's going to be something I can control.
no subject
But then she's stopped looking for ways out. Whatever the city does to her, it's nothing compared to returning home to a dead brother and a cataclysmic event that she might be able to stop now that she knows about it.
They hadn't been far from the Down public apartments when they first bumped into one another and now, after a short walk, they're only half a block away. But Wanda stops, knowing that some of the windows are actually in one piece on the building. ]
I hope you aren't here that long either, Marcos, but I recommend trying to find someone, just in case. It's best to leverage what little control the city gives us when we can.
no subject
( she's trying to help him, marcos knows, but it's so hard to even think about that right now. he doesn't want to put his life in the hands of someone else even if that someone else proves to be open minded and willing to let him live as he wants.
he sighs, looking away from the both of them for a few moments before he shakes his head. )
I appreciate you saying these things though. I need to hear them even if I don't want to hear them.
no subject
And even then, she didn't go with any of his recommendations, instead opting for someone the city had forced her together with. It was far from an ideal situation, and not one that she would wish on Marcos or anyone else here, regardless of how it worked in her favor. ]
I was given a lot of advice I wasn't interested in when I arrived here as well; it is only fair that I pass it along to you now. [ But she also understands that it's a lot to process, a lot that's difficult to accept, so she won't push it any further. ]
I think it's best if we part ways here. The building has some glass intact, and I doubt it was just that shop's windows affected by whatever that was.
no subject
( they'd had their close call with the windows earlier and he doesn't want to chance making her or anyone else uncomfortable now that he knew about that particular thing.
so, he just nods, forces a smile onto his face. )
I'm sure I'll see you around. ( since neither of them could technically leave. ) Thanks for your time.
no subject
[ The advice was important, much as he didn't want it — and she didn't want to give it — but Wanda still hated being a bearer of such not great news. But she gives him a small smile in return. ]
Take care of yourself, Marcos.
[ With that, she crosses her arms over her chest in case she passes by anyone else, and heads into the apartment building. ]
