It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

... and you're here! Finally! Welcome to Duplicity.

After choosing a door and stepping through to the other side, the first thing that greets you are the enthusiastic faces of people in medical scrubs and pristine lab coats. Their enthusiasm translates to eagerness as they strip you of your clothes to perform a thorough examination—you will be healed, bathed, and given a clear plastic top and pants along with clear plastic boots to wear until your items can be processed and delivered to your residence later in the evening. You are also given a device that accesses the network as well as the time and location of orientation.

If you enter Duplicity into the Up, congratulations! You're a Dominant, which means you are immediately picked up by a limo after processing and taken to your high rise. Here, it is two Dominants per floor with separate apartments. If you enter Duplicity into the Down, congratulations! You're a Submissive, which means you are directed towards public transportation with the address of the motel you'll be living in. Here, it is two Submissives per room with a shared common space for all rooms.

Enjoy your free time until orientation! Participation is mandatory by all new and old arrivals.

The weather is rather wet and rainy. Very, very rainy.

It's time for the monthly Duplicity train tour. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « RAIN RAIN GO AWAY

Ice and chilly weather have begun to give way to rain instead, with overcast skies and dark clouds a seemingly constant sight. While the overabundance of rain is an annoyance and comes with the usual series of problems, such as leaky ceilings, mold growth, and gutters or storm drains overflowing, this time the rain carries with it another problem altogether. A weather advisory warning is broadcast to every device, as well as on news networks and radio. The rain, at least for a few days, is not ordinary rain. Whether you're in the Up or the Down, when the water hits clothing it eats away at it. The more water it absorbs, the more the material disintegrates until the wearer is left naked.

When the rain comes in contact with skin (or is ingested) the effects seem to differ depending on where you are in Duplicity. In the Up, it's relatively harmless and merely has an aphrodisiac effect, leaving individuals feeling hot and bothered, more sociable and touchy feely.

Those in the Down, however, are not so lucky. As the rain seeps through the soil from the Up, it ends up laced with toxins, causing a range of less pleasant side effects for anyone unfortunate enough to come into contact with it. Aside from the aphrodisiac, those who get caught in the rain may develop an uncomfortable, itchy rash, leaving them looking rather spotty for a few days. Those who can't resist scratching at themselves will find a newfound pleasure to the relief it brings and start to crave the feeling or sight of similar marks. In worst case scenarios, individuals will become addicted to marking themselves and others, perhaps even to the point of breaking skin.

Effects may last for several hours after exposure and will stack with repeated exposures. In all cases, getting off will bring temporary relief but will not alleviate the symptoms entirely.

Plastic coverings seem to be unaffected by the rain and, as word spreads, the Natives in Duplicity form a mad rush buying up umbrellas. Unless a character is lucky, they may find themselves unable to purchase - or even borrow - one. Theft of umbrellas becomes widespread in the Down, often escalating to violence, and even the Up isn't safe from thugs trying to steal and resell this suddenly hot commodity.

There's another side to all of this, however. Due to the shortage of umbrellas, it isn't uncommon to see Dom/Sub pairs sharing umbrellas together. If anything, it's encouraged as a means to strengthen their bond. Enterprising Subs and Doms alike may even sell their "services" to escort individuals who would otherwise end up soaked.

« « « SUPPLEMENTAL INCOME

(cw: substance abuse, altered states, coercion, fluids, physical body changes)

A new "holistic" pharma company named SQuIRT is opening up in Duplicity and is paying a pretty penny for people to trial run their new line of supplements. These supplements are supposed to increase a person's vitality and energy levels, but the side effects are what the company is really looking out for.

Some of the side effects aren't so bad and could include:

Prolonged erections
Lactation in both men and women
Size enlargement of breasts or genitals
Copious amounts of ejaculate or sexual fluids
Sudden interest in previously unexplored kinks

While others might find their own reaction to be a little more severe:

Shrinkage of breasts, genitals, or entire being
Inability to cum
Uncontrollable hair growth or hair loss
Temporary loss of one or more senses
Spontaneous weeping

Subjects must take the supplements for at least a week, otherwise they'll receive no compensation for their troubles. All new arrivals will find themselves automatically enrolled in these trials, whether they want to be or not, and expected to report to the clinic. Of course they don't have to take the supplements, but the payout is certainly enticing, especially for those unfortunate enough to be branded Submissives.

Crime runs rampant in the Down as always but now, with the nastier side effects of the rain creating an ongoing problem, some unsavory types are sneaking their way into the Up where the effects aren't so hazardous.

The result is an uptick in crime in places that are usually considered safe. Be careful how you carry yourself - and your valuables. Those who look like easy pickings may find their pockets empty. Cameras in public areas are being vandalized as well, while homes and businesses are seeing a rise in graffiti. Most of the graffiti is merely obscene, but some is outright seditious. Good luck explaining the latter to the authorities if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

One of the smaller gangs that has a presence in the Down is taking particular advantage of the rain's disruption to expand their territory into the Up. Known as the Bulldogs, their members are young men and they have a reputation for violent muggings and assaults - mainly targeting Submissives. They loiter in groups near the train and the elevator between the Up and the Down to ambush the alone and unwary. At night, they also prey on those walking home from bars or clubs who may not fully have their wits about them.

In addition to beating up their victims for money, some of the Bulldogs are engaging in an informal competition over who can steal the most umbrellas - with bonus points awarded for whatever else they feel like. LIERs are worth double points by default, so watch out!

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, characters will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chooses "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide:

Players can choose whether to assign their character as a Dominant or Submissive on this TDM for the Door Pass for March Applications only. For May's Application round, threads started here may be used as samples however they will not be eligible for a Door Pass in May. Characters will need to use a thread from May's TDM, using those Door Pass rules, for an application after the March round.

To Note: Characters can only swap their designation for one of the following reasons: an event occurs that allows it or there are OOC reasons that make it a necessity. Any swap always requires mod approval and each character can only ever switch once. Characters that are being reapped will keep their previous designation but players can choose to use new TDMs with different designations for fun!

Once, a long time ago. I don't remember much about it though; you might have to remind me of what I might've seen. Or done.

[ He leans in, his body language as open and welcoming, inviting, as his words. it's always pleasant to be wanted, especially by someone as attractive as Umeda. Looks and brains, apparently, since he's a doctor. ]

[Umeda shifted to lean closer as well. If they were going to play the distance game, he was happy to oblige. Games were fun as hell. His finger still trailed over that hand, teasing.]

Oh yeah? Do you remember where you landed? What city? I've been to most of the major ones of course. School trips and all that.

[ This close, Umeda may or may not notice the way Johnny's eyeteeth are a tad more pointed than most as they talk. Or the way his tongue is slightly forked when he absently licks his lips. ]

I tend to move every few years, though I tend to spend most of my time in Europe--I tend to stand out in Asia. It's a rather hedonistic lifestyle, I must admit. Do you enjoy traveling?

[ He's not making a point of his inhumanity, but he's also not making any attempt to hide it. ]

[Closer, Umeda was able to take in details, but they didn't bother him. Yet. Special effects makeup wasn't the most uncommon thing in his line of work, so the fangs didn't really register as being real or not. Or a threat. And body modification wasn't unheard of, even if it was a little unusual. And sort of titillating. He edged a little closer, lacing his fingers through Johnny's.]

Yeah? That sounds so lonely. You really never spend much time in any one place?

[Neither one of them was giving away very much, but that was something Umeda tended to do. That Johnny was doing it too was amusing and reassuring. A casual friend who liked to fuck was just what he wanted.]

A couple years, here and there. It all depends on if anyone or anything's caught my attention.

[ Being wanted wasn't unusual, but it's still welcome, all the same. He sweeps his thumb across the back of Umeda's hand. ]

It seems I've got a little less choice here than I normally might, but I haven't quite found a downside. Yet.

Still. You never stay longer than that?

[He inched a little closer, eyes going half-lidded. They were almost close enough to kiss, and he wanted to. His hand lifted almost without thought, hovering near Johnny's throat. Umeda wanted to touch the mark, to see what happened, but he didn't quite dare. Technically someone with that mark had to do what he said, or some such shit. That wasn't cool at all. Umeda wasn't forcing anyone to do anything. Ever.]

You mean your mark? Did it hurt? When they put it on you?

[ His breathing's gone shallow, his eyes half-lidded, and Johnny leans in, head angled so that if Umeda wanted, he could so easily close the distance between them. ]

It hurt.

[ but he says it like benediction--soft and pleased, breathed into the scant space between their lips. ]

[He kissed Johnny with a soft sound of need, fingers stroking the man's throat where the mark was. Umeda wasn't the kinkiest person out there, but he wasn't afraid of a little experimenting either. And a little pain during sex was hardly a bad thing if you did it right. He let his tongue slide over Johnny's lips, seeking entrance, the hand still holding Johnny's tightening a little.

Umeda also didn't care much if anyone was watching them. As long as no one tried to butt in, they'd have no problems.]

[ Yes. He wraps his free arm around Umeda's shoulders, parting his lips immediately to welcome the kiss as he arches into the touch, making a low sound of want as their tongues slide together. ]

[Oh, well then! Umeda groaned softly and leaned into the embrace, happy to give the man anything he wanted. He was a good kisser too, tipping his head so Johnny could get his tongue a little deeper. Umeda felt his own tongue slide against those sharp teeth and shivered, another finger of desire running down his spine when that slightly-forked tongue made itself more well known. He didn't realize it would be so noticeable, but that was fun as hell.]

[ On one hand, there's only so far they can go before they reach the point of public indecency. On the other, this is a place that decided a full, invasive examination was necessary upon arrival and then proceeded to dress said arrivals in clear plastic.

In any case, he's mostly staying in his seat, but he isn't making any secret of how much he's enjoying the kiss, his fingertips dipping into the back collar of Umeda's coat to brush lightly over the skin there. ]

[Umeda wouldn't normally consider doing more than kissing in public, especially back home where what he was could be . . . dangerous. But the city sort of encouraged bad decisions. He wasn't going to strip right there on the seat, although it was kind of moot when you were wearing transparent plastic, but he definitely wouldn't be telling Johnny to stop what he was doing anytime soon. Leaning over the seats was awkward, but that was part of the fun.

He took his time with the kissing, savoring the contact, and trying to figure out what Johnny liked best. More tongue? A better angle? Having his hand resting on the man's throat? It mattered to him. Even if they never did more, it mattered. Umeda didn't look for anything long-term, even friendship was something he tried to avoid, but for the time he was with someone? During those hours or minutes he was devoted and loving and absolutely sincere in his desire.]

[ Teeth, tongue, and a hint of danger is what he likes best--though just having all that attention focused on him was mostly enough to have him melting into everything Umeda does. ]

[He groaned softly and finally broke the kiss, breathing a little too quickly to feign nonchalance. Umeda gave the man a hazy look and a lazy smile, stroking that mark on his throat.]

You do that really well you know? But we should probably cool it a little. This is ah . . . a little public. And we're both basically naked . . .

[Not that he actually wanted to stop. Umeda wanted to keep kissing and touching and see what else they might do, but he also wasn't that much of an exhibitionist. But shit, Johnny was hot!]

[ He laughs breathlessly, tilting his throat to better bare his mark to Umeda's fingers. ]

I've had a lot of practice. But, I getcha. Walking is gonna be fun, whenever I gotta get off.

I mean, I'd be more than happy to take care of that, if we had a little privacy. I like pushing the envelope but this place is . . .

[Umeda glanced around, fingers still stroking Johnny's throat. It was . . . god. He really wanted the man.]

Maybe we could get off together?

[ The pun (unintentional as it likely was) makes him laugh, a low, husky sound vibrating through his throat that Umeda can no doubt feel. ]

I've got no objections.

[Maybe it was intentional, maybe not. Umeda wasn’t telling, he just gave a soft sigh of pleasure and tipped his head up for another kiss. The hand on Johnny’s throat was gentle and loving as it stroked.]

Well then, I guess we just need to pick a decent stop and find a private place. You don’t mind if I do all the work, do you Johnny? I mean, there’s no onus on you to do anything but sit back and enjoy.

[Because Umeda really enjoyed using his mouth, and other parts, to give a man pleasure. But he never demanded anything of a lover past enjoying himself.]

[What a terrible thought. It was going to be uncomfortable as hell moving anywhere honestly, and he wouldn’t be able to kiss and touch Johnny until they walked free of the train. The seats had given them some faint privacy but standing near the doors they’d be totally exposed. Umeda wasn’t so confident of the city that he found the idea of blatant making out safe. Still, if they didn’t move, they’d never finish and that was its own problem.

Umeda sighed and leaned in closer to kiss Johnny’s throat, finally taking his hand away.]

It’s a pity this place doesn’t have private cars.

[ That makes him laugh breathlessly, tilting his head pointedly towards the Submissive kneeling on the floor in the aisle with her head resting against her Dominant's thigh. ]

I don't think they care.

Yeah well, I’m not asking you to sit here while I suck you off. Just resting your head in someone’s lap isn’t really the same thing. Close I guess but not quite. Unless you really want that?

[Umeda wasn’t the most adventurous in bed by habit, but he rarely said no to trying new things. It was just . . . There were risks and then there were risks. What Johnny was offering was a risk and it was a little terrifying. He shifted in his seat, torn, and laced his fingers through Johnny’s again with a faint squeeze.]

Think there’s a bathroom in this thing?

Well...

[ He pulls away with a rueful sigh, brushing his thumb over Umeda's jaw. And then he grins at him, mischievous as he gets to his feet, putting himself very nearly in Umeda's lap as he climbs over the other man. ]

There's only way way to find out.

[ He offers a hand when he gets to the aisle, careless of the show he's offering...literally everyone else who might be paying attention. ]

Coming?

[Umeda's eyes and face followed the man, trying to keep that touch as long as he could, and his smile was brilliant when Johnny held out his hand. He took it and stood up as well, just as uncomfortable as Johnny in his see-through clothes. Umeda laced his fingers through Johnny's and started to walk down the aisle, glancing back with a coy look.]

You know, we could make this a regular thing if it turns out as fun as I hope.

[Well. Probably not. Johnny didn't seem like the clingy type, so it might work, but getting close to people just wasn't something Umeda aimed for. He didn't like people getting emotionally involved regarding him. It would be a lie to say he could feel much back besides fondness and maybe friendship.]

I wouldn't be opposed. No strings attached fun, right?

[ He does care for each of his partners, strongly and deeply, but he's also not stupid enough to let the emotions linger beyond the moment. Friendships, yes. Anything else is a risk he isn't quite willing to take. ]
