« « « OUT OF CLUTTER FIND SIMPLICITY

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

» » » LIES TRAVEL IN COMPANY

After stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « END IN THE DISCORD

While the societal climate between Dominants and Submissives remains somewhat neutral throughout Duplicity, there has been the occasional whisper of defiance and call for equality. Yet, demonstrations and visible proof of this unhappiness spreads faster by word of mouth on a day exactly when you need it most.

Welcome to Autonomy, a "traveling" nightclub that is never in the same place twice. People wanting to attend only learn of its lucrative location and password hours before it opens for business. Tonight, I choose the third door will get you inside and into the temporary freedom club Autonomy has to offer. In this circle, there are no assigned designations and no consequences for taking a role that isn't the one given by society. So, a Dominant may become the Submissive they've always wanted to be—or vice versa. Dominants and Submissives alike are able to mingle without repercussion and be themselves. Food, drinks, and private areas for more intimate – or if your preference is sexual – encounters are provided. Donations are accepted at any point during the night to further Autonomy's attempts of spreading the fulfillment that comes from being untitled.

On the night you choose to visit, Autonomy is holding a random lottery for temporary connections. When entering, you have the choice of submitting your name into this drawing to be paired with someone else in the club regardless of designation. A short while later, a message will pop up on your device with the name and information of your partner, and whether or not you choose to meet them is purely at your discretion. Having more than one connection isn't completely unusual either.

» » » TABLE IT FOR LATER

Gratification of being a successful Dominant or Submissive isn't necessarily simple. Learning curves are to be made, and mistakes will happen. Led by a Dominant and Submissive couple – Miriam and Victoria, who have been paired for twenty-two years – a monthly meeting for unattached Dominants and Submissives is held in the conference room of Morning Wood motel in the Down. The meeting starts a few minutes after nine and has no designated end time. The couple introduce themselves and explain the purpose of the meeting: learn the proper method for a new kink and possibly find your perfect partner. The space is intimate and well-stocked with refreshments.

To begin, Victoria, while blindfolded, balances on her hands and knees with her back perfectly level. Her partner, when ready, places various items on the level surface–a full cup, a plate. The Submissive is meant to hold the items until the Dominant believes she's reached her limit. The exercise is one of trust and understanding. The demonstration is a short one, followed by Miriam removing the blindfold and soothing her Submissive. The words are whispered low and with care, clearly a method that is specific to this couple. The process is concluded with the pair handing out workups, videos, and answering questions. Anyone wishing to practice Purposeful Submission can do so in the open room with a random volunteer, aided by the couple, or can find someone to take to one of the rented rooms. Sex may follow any scene but is not necessarily included. Experimenting with unattached Dominants and Submissives allows for new relationships to form.

« « « MOD & OOC NOTES

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles based on birthdays; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, character will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chose "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide. For characters with a birthday falling in the months of January to June, their designation will be Dominant. For characters with a birthday falling in the months of July to December, their designation will be Submissive. For characters with an unknown birthday, their designation will be Dominant.

Arrival into Duplicity has not been used as a prompt as it is a rather large part of introducing the game and will be saved for the first in-game log. But feel free to thread it on the TDM. Also, any locations throughout Duplicity are available for TDM prompts as well!

Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!!

[ scott doesn't have to say it for stiles to understand the actual meaning behind the words. he's known scott long enough to recognize when he's trying to make things seem better than they are. he's always been the bright optimist to stiles' skeptical pessimist, and this time is no different.

stiles presses his lips into a thin line, not quite a smile, but approaching something like it. he claps a hand down over the space where scott's neck and shoulder meet, squeezes a little, nods his head. getting out of here sounds like a great idea, even if stiles doesn't exactly like the idea of what's waiting for them outside.

the down is so completely opposite from the up that it almost makes him feel a little sick and a lot guilty for the accommodations he's been given. and for what reason? for what purpose, other than to hold those advantages over those who have been given less? now that he knows scott is here, and what the line down his throat means, his stomach suddenly twists a little bit more.

stiles gives the club one more passing glance, just to be sure they're not about to leave anyone behind, and then gives scott's shoulder a little nudge in the direction of the door they both came through. ]
Yeah. Yeah, let's— good idea.

[Scott's eyes carve their own path around the club. He wonders if he should find someone, get his name removed from the lottery. He'd feel a little bad hanging someone up waiting for him. He spots the lines everywhere he looks, where they're present and absent, and it turns in his head.

He's not stupid, all things to the contrary. He knows the world tends to look more kindly on people with his dad's last name than his mom's. This is....it's not that, but he wonders if it's informed by it somehow, if there are prejudices to go along with the tattoos. Dominants control this place, but they don't earn that right, they just do. And Submissives - people like him, now - just have to abide by those rules.

It's insane, and it leaves a sour taste in his mouth. He gets why Stiles is worried, and he's making a concerted effort to keep his emotions in check. Freaking out isn't going to help anyone, right?

So Scott nods, and leans forward so that he can put his shoulder into helping clear a path to the door. He doesn't tell Stiles there's no one here to leave behind: he'd rather hope that risk is real than be confident it's not. Once outside, he takes a long breath of fresh - well, freshish air, and looks around; there's garbage in the street, on the sidewalks. It looks nothing like what the Up did, when he took the train through.]

We have to figure out so much. [There's the barest hint of being overwhelmed in his voice.]

[ freaking out might not help anyone, but that doesn't mean stiles isn't slowly creeping towards doing just that, but that's something he can deal with later, if anything comes to a head. for now, though, he seems to have a relatively decent grasp on his nerves, nothing too extreme or concerning for scott to pick up on beyond the mostly base-level buzz of anxiety that comes with stiles being in over his head.

it's easy to stay close as scott pushes through the sea of people, using the space scott creates to push through. he makes a point of twisting and turning his body so he touches a few people as possible, as if he's acutely aware of how easy it could be to give someone the wrong idea in a place like this. any other time, he might be slightly intrigued by the atmosphere — he's still a teenager, after all, and he still has wants and needs and people paying attention to him is nice, always —, but right now his priorities are elsewhere, is attention hooked into more important, pressing things.

like what the hell is going on, for instance.

the club may not have been the peak of luxury — there's probably only so much one can do, having to move locations every night, only putting the word out hours before the doors open, he imagines —, but it was different enough that he forgot, for a moment, what it was like outside of the little pocket of freedom. the 'fresh' air outside just feels thick in his lungs as he breathes in, emphasized by the filthy state of the streets and the general, run-down state of everything else.

the contrast to the up is jarring, and stiles gaze shifts from the trash in the street to the thin line bisecting scott's throat. the line that isn't present on his own, for whatever reason he hasn't quite figured out yet. if he hated the tattoo on scott's arm, then he hates the one on his throat twice as much.

scott's tone is... well, it doesn't do great things for stiles right now, if he's honest, but like scott, he knows being rational and clear-headed will probably do them more good than losing their cool, at least for right now. he breathes out, parks a hand on his hip and rubs the other one over his head, spiking up his hair a little as his hand slides down over the back of his neck, pacing a couple steps away from scott, and then turning back. ]

There was— [ he drops both of his hands, takes a few steps closer so he can lower his voice to something closer to a murmur. he's not worried about scott being able to hear him, but there's something in the back of his mind that makes him feel like he should be discreet, a tiny prick of paranoia hushing him. ] — I remember two doors.

[ stiles pauses for a moment, eyes flickering back and forth between scotts, looking for some kind of recognition. he seems a little unsettled, if only because the last time he stepped through a door, he was dreaming, but it led to the nogitsune and a whole bunch of shit he doesn't want to revisit, even if that was ages ago now. this probably isn't anything at all like that, but if he needs some reassurance, well.

all he needs is for scott to tell him he remembers them too, that it wasn't a dream or some kind of wild hallucination. ]

[They've known each other so long, it's almost impossible to not recognize how little things affect one another. Scott wishes it was impossible to misunderstand each other - it would have avoided so much pain for them both - but he's trying not to punish himself for something that's already been fixed.

It's why he's quick to nod, when Stiles brings up the doors.]

Me too. I heard other people talking about it. They both said something on 'em, something different? I don't remember which I went through. The left, maybe.

[He reaches out, claps Stiles' shoulder. Scott can practically exude reassurance when he really believes something, and he does not believe that Stiles is about to play host to another Nogitsune.

He's not going to think too hard about it, just in case.]

Did they give you a place to stay?

[ and just like that, whatever tension stiles may have been carrying seems to ease back a little under the weight of scott's hand on his shoulder and the confirmation that this isn't a repeat of something they've already taken care of. the lack of hesitation to jump in and settle stiles' unspoken concerns helps a lot, too. the road behind them may be a little rocky (though stiles will always mostly blame theo for that), but they wouldn't be scott and stiles if they didn't come out on the other side even stronger than they were before.

stiles nods a little, his gaze a little distant as he tries to recall which door he stepped through. he can see it vividly in his mind, the strange phrase written across the panel. he'd stood there for longer than he'd like to admit, trying to figure out what either phrase could mean, if anything at all, before he'd chosen. ]

Yeah. Yeah, I think I went through the one on the right...

[ somehow, he's not surprised that they'd choose opposite doors. it seems exactly something they would do. keeping the balance, even unintentionally.

stiles pauses for a handful of seconds, something like guilt flashing across his face, brief but recognizable. and it's not as if he's done anything wrong, not as if he was allowed to make his own decision between the up and the down, but something about this whole situation just makes him uncomfortable for too many reasons.

he nods, the tilt of his head subtle. ]

It's... [ he gestures upward with one hand, a little vaguely. up there. ] You're not— you don't have to like, stay down here, right? [ his eyes dart to scott's throat again, then back up. ] Because there's plenty of room.

[ maybe not plenty of room, but like hell is stiles not gonna try to drag scott into living with him, especially when the alternative is down here, and it's not like they haven't lived in each other's back pocket before. ]
semifreakingnormal: (like a drum my heart never stops)

[personal profile] semifreakingnormal 2018-09-24 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
[Scott nods as Stiles talks through the doors; he can imagine how long Stiles spent trying to figure it out, whether or not it was a riddle, the past repeating itself. When's a door not a door? He gets it, as much as someone else can, anyway. And for as long as Stiles probably took, Scott just picked a door and moved, eager to get to someplace he recognized. That didn't turn out so great, but at least it brought them both here.

He thinks, maybe, he should feel guilty about that, about being glad Stiles is stuck here with him. Except that things always work better when both of their heads are in the game, and Scott tells himself that, and again, hoping it'll settle in.

With a long look around, Scott shrugs his shoulders up near his ears. How is any of this supposed to work? How is it even enforced, is there a sheriff in this place? Cops at all? Part of him wants to say he has no idea and just sit down and wait for someone to explain well enough that he understands - but that's a part of him that's been lying quiet and dormant since sophomore year. Too much rides on him to give in to that particular weakness.

So he pushes a smile to his face, the kind he's grown into - not the giddy, bouncy grin that used to decorate his lips, but the softer, more somber smile that knows it only has so long to be.]

I dunno, but I'm pretty sure you can have anyone you want over. And I'm definitely an anyone.
