« « « OUT OF CLUTTER FIND SIMPLICITY

It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit. Yet, solace is found in the lies we tell each other, comforted by the peace of knowing that we're not alone in our depravity, and once on this path, sin itself becomes the lesser of two evils masked in a cloud of normalcy.

This is how Duplicity has functioned since the beginning. The divide of power and social standing is overt in that Dominants influence the decisions made both publicly and privately while Submissives cater to the rules presented to them. It is the way of Duplicity to assign random designations at birth with no leeway in altering what has been given. Climate in the Up is far stricter than that of the Down; violating outlined personas for a Dominant or Submissive while in full view of others is punished by degree of infraction. In the Down, many tend to turn a blind eye to these sorts of offenses.

To counteract the discovery of the Deceit Gene – a natural "negative" response to all stimuli – the L.I.E.S. program was founded. The program had been designed to introduce new subjects to the current environment and test for the Deceit Gene through immersion in Duplicity's standing society. Sexual impulses and encounters increase the chances of detecting the gene within these individuals. Participants are typically released from L.I.E.S. after a year; however, results have remained unsatisfactory and testing still continues.

» » » LIES TRAVEL IN COMPANY

After stepping through the door and participating in orientation, LIERS are assembled together in the Up for a tour of Duplicity in its entirety. Seats are in pairs and randomly assigned to Dominants and Submissives alike. Traveling from Fiddler's Square, the train journeys through various parts of the Up, showcasing society and examples of lifestyle. Along the way, frequent stops are made; a variety of passengers can be seen exiting and entering the doors. A Dominant with a kneeling Submissive takes a seat near the front of the train at one stop. A small group of Submissives board and sit closer to the LIERS at another, all seemingly content in their roles. As the tour continues through the Up, the train passes close to the Market and White Wall Bridge and zips by North Park before heading into the Down and bypassing Red Wall Bridge and South Park.

The train makes a "final" stop at Riddler's Square, where inhabitants of the Down are instructed to return to their temporary housing. Those who live in the Up are permitted to stay on the train and revisit the same locations while returning.

« « « END IN THE DISCORD

While the societal climate between Dominants and Submissives remains somewhat neutral throughout Duplicity, there has been the occasional whisper of defiance and call for equality. Yet, demonstrations and visible proof of this unhappiness spreads faster by word of mouth on a day exactly when you need it most.

Welcome to Autonomy, a "traveling" nightclub that is never in the same place twice. People wanting to attend only learn of its lucrative location and password hours before it opens for business. Tonight, I choose the third door will get you inside and into the temporary freedom club Autonomy has to offer. In this circle, there are no assigned designations and no consequences for taking a role that isn't the one given by society. So, a Dominant may become the Submissive they've always wanted to be—or vice versa. Dominants and Submissives alike are able to mingle without repercussion and be themselves. Food, drinks, and private areas for more intimate – or if your preference is sexual – encounters are provided. Donations are accepted at any point during the night to further Autonomy's attempts of spreading the fulfillment that comes from being untitled.

On the night you choose to visit, Autonomy is holding a random lottery for temporary connections. When entering, you have the choice of submitting your name into this drawing to be paired with someone else in the club regardless of designation. A short while later, a message will pop up on your device with the name and information of your partner, and whether or not you choose to meet them is purely at your discretion. Having more than one connection isn't completely unusual either.

» » » TABLE IT FOR LATER

Gratification of being a successful Dominant or Submissive isn't necessarily simple. Learning curves are to be made, and mistakes will happen. Led by a Dominant and Submissive couple – Miriam and Victoria, who have been paired for twenty-two years – a monthly meeting for unattached Dominants and Submissives is held in the conference room of Morning Wood motel in the Down. The meeting starts a few minutes after nine and has no designated end time. The couple introduce themselves and explain the purpose of the meeting: learn the proper method for a new kink and possibly find your perfect partner. The space is intimate and well-stocked with refreshments.

To begin, Victoria, while blindfolded, balances on her hands and knees with her back perfectly level. Her partner, when ready, places various items on the level surface–a full cup, a plate. The Submissive is meant to hold the items until the Dominant believes she's reached her limit. The exercise is one of trust and understanding. The demonstration is a short one, followed by Miriam removing the blindfold and soothing her Submissive. The words are whispered low and with care, clearly a method that is specific to this couple. The process is concluded with the pair handing out workups, videos, and answering questions. Anyone wishing to practice Purposeful Submission can do so in the open room with a random volunteer, aided by the couple, or can find someone to take to one of the rented rooms. Sex may follow any scene but is not necessarily included. Experimenting with unattached Dominants and Submissives allows for new relationships to form.

« « « MOD & OOC NOTES

Please read carefully.

On each Test Drive Meme, there will be a section noting character roles based on birthdays; these will vary each TDM. On an IC level, character will still have gone through the doors but assignments OOCly are still randomized. When applying, there is a section of the application that denotes whether the character chose "left" or "right". When participating on the TDM, there will be a third option. Players may link either a top level or a thread (five or more comments from their character) from the TDM and title the link as "Door Pass". This means that the player is choosing to take the designation that they were randomly assigned on the TDM, rather than taking the designation of a door. If the player decides to select a door rather than use the pass, then they are trying their luck; they may get the same designation they had on the TDM or the opposite. Once the application is submitted, players can't change their choice.

To assign roles to characters for this TDM, use the following guide. For characters with a birthday falling in the months of January to June, their designation will be Dominant. For characters with a birthday falling in the months of July to December, their designation will be Submissive. For characters with an unknown birthday, their designation will be Dominant.

Arrival into Duplicity has not been used as a prompt as it is a rather large part of introducing the game and will be saved for the first in-game log. But feel free to thread it on the TDM. Also, any locations throughout Duplicity are available for TDM prompts as well!

Please remember to mark any necessary content, and have fun!!

Rogue | xmcu

[OOC: >>>END IN THE DISCORD. Her birthday's in April, so she's a Dominant for purposes of this TDM. I'm also up for the other settings if we want to write something else:D]

Rogue wasn't sure exactly how people felt about their assigned designations, but, for her, it was exhausting. Leadership was something she'd learned over the years, but not to this extent. And there was something that bothered her about being set up is a gorgeous apartment with everything she could ever ask for while other people, simply based on which door they chose, got assigned to less glamorous living conditions.

Frankly, she would have been more comfortable if someone else was giving her a little more direction instead of having to figure things out for herself constantly.

That was what brought her to Autonomy. That and curiosity. She wanted to see how people interacted outside of the roles they'd been given. Things were so structured outside. She just wanted a chance to relax, stop worrying about be responsible, have a few drinks, and not worry about anyone else for a little while.

Of course, the idea of forming new connections appealed to her (greatly), if only because it gave her a chance to get to know how other people felt about this. Assuming that they would talk now that they were in a completely "free" space.

So when a name and some information popped up on her phone, linking her with the person she'd been assigned, she immediately texted that person.

Hey. Meet me by the bar if you want. Wearing a black mesh top, white stripes in my hair.

Crowley didn't mind the role he had been given. There was a certain edge of laziness to the demon that meant he didn't always feel like filling the role he had been deposited into, but that was par for the course of his life.

He didn't seek out Autonomy so much as happen across the details that would grant him access. He had sidled into the nightclub as if he had been frequenting the place for decades and slipped his number into the lottery without hesitation. He wasn't concerned about the part he played directly, but rather the allure of his own most frequently visited sin.

Uncertainty. His persistent habit of questioning and pushing at authority while keeping up appearances had not been left behind in grand old England. It had clung to him like a skin he couldn't shed, and left him with that same familiar itch of discomfort. Why. A question he poked and prodded at so often that he could still hear the angel's long suffering sigh as his mind jumped into yet another spiral of questions.

His phone chimed and the demon slipped it free from his deep black pockets before sauntering over to the bar, a pair of dark sunglasses obscuring his eyes. He took a glass that was presumably meant for someone else and smiled, sliding into the chair beside her.

"Hello, Rogue."

As uncomfortable as it was, there was a small part of her that had started adjusting to her role here. Things like already having a drink ready for the person she was meeting, assuming he’d show, regardless of his role or what he felt his role should be. And assuming that he’d take the drink. Because that drink he picked up was for him, whether he knew it or not.

She was used to be assertive with people she knew well and trusted, and those people were far and few, but she was also used to being standoffish with strangers. This place had at least helped a bit with that. And she was more forward now than she had been.

Like now. “You can see in those things?” she said, raising her eyebrows over the drink she was sipping on and gesturing to his sunglasses. But raised eyebrows or not, it was said with a bit of humor in her expression and not with any malice.

"Well enough to find you." His response came with a smile as he took another drink. He let his arm rest on the bar and turned to face her in his seat. His head tipped to one side, the glass held loosely between two fingers to dangle and reflect the lights in the club.

"What brings you down the rabbit hole?"

Fair enough.

What brought her here? Exhaustion from day-to-day life, trying to learn how to act appropriately. Appropriately for this city anyway. She'd spent too much time in a prison to comfortably fill her role. A prison where everything was scheduled and planned out and dictated. It had been unbearable at first but she'd apparently gotten very used to it because once she'd gotten here this life felt unbearable.

"It's always nice to try new things, right? And, I admit it, I was curious about how people would act once the rules were lifted."

Ye Zun was someone who preferred to be in control of his situation, because for much of his life, he was denied that. He didn't mind the role he was given, though perhaps that would change when it came to having to attend to the needs of someone else under his care. He was still new.

He was there learning the lay of the land, and while he wasn't terribly interested in making friends, as such, it wouldn't hurt to try to see what other people here were thinking. So he went to meet this person when she sent him a message. At least, once he figured out that she had sent him a message. That sort of technology was still pretty foreign to him.

"Good evening. It seems we've been assigned to talk."

Talking to new people. Getting to know them. Having to explain all the slightly off things about herself: her hair, the gloves, the typical scarf she had around her neck. She'd always hated it. But even in a club where everyone was put back on the same level, a certain amount of confidence had developed over her time here. And it showed, with the smile she glanced up with.

"Hi. Ye Zun?" There might have been some people in this city who had been placed into the same designation as her who used it in completely selfish ways, but she wasn't one of them. And she had to imagine that people in the opposite role were just as frustrated with having no control over their own lives as she was with having to control everything.

"Drink? The vodka's good. The tequila... I'd go for something else."

Black mesh. White-striped hair. Even in this strange place, that should be enough to spot someone by.

Sure enough, peering over the heads of the clubgoers, Éowyn quickly spotted a girl with white hair lashing through brunette, sitting by the bar. Well, she had come this far... Picking up her own drink, she tossed back her waist-length hair and started towards her apparent match. She made a striking sight, tall and slender, still in the long green gown she had arrived in; she held herself like the noblewoman she was, shoulders back and chin raised, as she swept through the crowd towards Rogue.

"Would I be right," she said, raising one eyebrow as she slipped into a seat nearby, "to think that you just sent me a message?"

Well. Rogue felt underdressed.

Éowyn was striking. It wasn't just the dress or the hair, but the way she held herself, the way she walked. And, for a moment, she felt a bit of that familiar nervousness around new people. The one that crept in and left her feeling fidgety and uncomfortable.

Taking a long swallow of her drink, she nodded towards the other woman.

"If you're Éowyn you would be." Hopefully she was pronouncing it correctly.

Éowyn smiled a little - a cool smile that didn't entirely reach her eyes, but a smile nonetheless - and nodded. "Then we are well-met, and I am glad not to have begun in error."

Glancing down at her device one more time, she set it down on the countertop and cleared her throat. Despite her aloof appearance, she had to admit that she was oddly nervous. This was such a strange place, and so entangled with rules and social cues she couldn't begin to understand, that she was a little afraid that she might cause grave offence without ever realising. To someone who prided herself on command of any situation, that was unsettling.

"I fear," she said, after a moment, "that I do not know what to say. Or, truthfully, what is expected of us." There's something a little more human in her voice now, a kind of embarrassment rather at odds with her elegance and pride.

( autonomy seems like the place everyone wants to be in, and lorna kind of gets why. or at least she thinks she does.

she comes her frequently in attempts to get away from the dichotomy of the dominant and submissive, but not for any desire of switching roles. rather, the whole dichotomy does her head in. even as a dominant herself, she finds herself unsettled by the existence of the submissives and their role in society.

so at autonomy she drinks, she dances, and at some point she remembers throwing her name into a digital hat to try to meet some people. look for some like-minded souls. it never hurt to try to build up a new network in a new world.

there's barely the notification of the match when she gets a second notification of an invite.

Lorna looks over the message before clicking her device off and pushing it back into her pocked before making her way to the bar. It takes her a second, but finally she spots the other girl. )

Rogue, then? ( she asks as she climbs onto the stool next to the woman. )

[When the green-hair woman approached, Rogue has to wonder for a moment if she's another mutant. Which is silly, there are so many different people from, apparently, so many different worlds, that green hair really isn't that atypical. In a way, it's made her own hair and the gloves she wears a whole lot less strange to people as well, which is nice. And she's already made the mistake of thinking another person might be a mutant because of something like different hair or eyes.]

Lorna? [It's said with a smile as her eyes quickly scan over the woman for any type of tattoo. There isn't one. And that's fine, especially here, because she's always curious about how other dominants get on in this city. If they struggle, or if they're happy to be in charge with the finer amenities.

Did you come here for a good time or because you're sick of what's out there? Both answers are right, by the way. [Actually, any answer was 'right'.]

( the strange thing is, many of them Lorna might have called mutant herself. but they all have so many different names for themselves, it really calls into question her definition of a "mutant." that's all way over her head, though. she's not here for a crash course in genetics. )

Yeah, Lorna. ( she nods, making a quick comment to the bartender to order a beer. she'd prefer something stronger on a normal day, but she likes to keep her wits about her in this whole other world. ) And good thing both are right, since my answer is both.

( the beer is passed to her and she frowns as she considers what she says, turning back to Rogue. ) Not.. that kind of good time. Just a good time away from whatever shit is going on out there. ( she nods her head back towards the door. )
